Game changing advice and having read, re-read and now reading once again the Short Game Bible by Mr Pelz, my game has improved 5 shots in a short time (12 to 7). In fact, today focussing only on this swing at a championship par 3 course here in Sydney, I managed 9 under over 18 holes (including an ace). My groupings are ridiculously small - even a few local tour pros say they can't match my short game (which I find hard to believe but that's what they are telling me). So buy the book and work hard if you are *truly* interested in reducing your handicap! Cheers and thanks - Dave

I'm struck by how many different (and effective) ways there are to hit a wedge. This one is quite different than Mickelson's approach which is different from Jason Day's method.

Ha. I agree. I just watched Phil's pitching lesson yesterday. He started by saying 90% of the amateurs he sees have the ball in the middle their stance and they need to set up with it in the front for high shots or back for low shots. Very different from Pelz.

The thing about Phil Mickelson that I can’t ignore (and probably no one should) when taking wedge thoughts from him is that Tiger Woods called him the most naturally gifted player to ever pick up a golf club. The compliment was true but also backhanded as he felt Phil never worked as hard as he could have to be the best. That being said, Phil could hit a solid lob wedge shot balancing the ball on his head. When he places the ball at different places his stance he is accounting for the bottom of the arc somehow. Most likely through choking up and down on whatever club he’s using. The club is always going to have that bottom arc strike point. The rest they can tweak to ensure it’s where they want it. It’s a little like how you see a wide range of swing types on Tour. Think Jim Furyk and Jordan Spieth. Their swings are wildly different but produce the same contact nearly every time. The identical portion of all PGA Tour players swings is in the downswing contact zone from 7 o’clock to 5 o’clock (consider the downswing a counter-clockwise circle ⭕️). If you had a slow motion capture if every pro thru the impact zone they would all be identical. You might notice radical shifts in stance, ball position, and body movement but the club in that short sliver of space is always going to be consistent no matter which pro it is.

@@cd5926 I think the key to what Phil says is when he says he only aims to hit the ball low or high This might explain why he says most bad players he sees have the ball in the middle it’s them not really knowing what shit they are trying to hit

The center ball position is for a mid height shot. Move the ball forward in your stance for a high shot, move it back for a low shot. It all takes practice, but you need all three shots. It's the same for every club in the bag.

I’m a bit confused. In “Secrets of the Short Game” Phil mentioned Pelz several times, and it sounded to me that the two of them have the same short game philosophy, which is to NEVER play the ball in the center of the stance. What has changed?
@drs13903 жыл бұрын
My exact thought. Back foot for low runners works well, but I've tried for years placing the ball on the front foot (what Phil says) and it's just too hard. Apparently you need to be Phil to do that 😕
@brett70113 жыл бұрын
And in pelz old videos no where to be found he didn’t like that “hinge” in the backswing. I’m seeing so much conflicting information
@seanhawkins93873 жыл бұрын
I believe what ur thinking about is the short game around the green or within about 20 yards. There you use the ball off the front foot and u can use phils hinge and hold. The kind of pitch Peltz was hitting looked more like 30 yards. This is technique is probably easier to do for wedges between 30-100 yards as it’s easier to make contact with the ball and control the flight with a wedge out the middle of the stance. If I put the ball forward when I’m about 50+ yards out I have to move my weight forward until I’m more over the ball where if your not a lower handicap player can be difficult to generate the speed and have the stability to pull it off.
@steveperryman8102 Жыл бұрын
@@brett7011truth is you can use any technique successfully if you practice an enormous amount. However, if you don't Trevino's advice is best imo. You must "hold" the clubhead and never let the shaft point backward at and immediately beyond impact. Michelson says the same ..."hinge and hold"

Phil isn't a teacher, and as a result only sees it from his perspective - which is as one of the greatest short game players of all time. Phil's method requires good timing, and good timing usually requires lots of practice to keep it up. Amateurs do not get to practice every day like Phil does.

The golf club in line with your front arm. The bottom of the arc will be at the front foot. Stay low back and through, keep moving to the target you'll be fine.
@TheNYgolfer2 жыл бұрын
Yes the bottom of the arc is at the front shoulder but you don't want to hit the ball at the low point with irons. Especially not with a wedge. It would be very difficult to get the sweet spot of the wedge on the ball if you place the ball at the low point of the arc unless you have a ton of forward shaft lean. Keep the ball in the center and open the face if you want a higher trajectory of go with a higher lofted club. If you want a lower trajectory go with a lower lofted club or move the ball back of center
@weber_with1B3 жыл бұрын
So Dave and Phil worked together. Dave says to place the ball in the middle of the stance. Phil says there are only TWO positions for the ball; either off the front foot to hit it high and soft or off the back foot for a low shot. Why can’t golf instructors agree on anything! So frustrating! Find what works for you and your swing and stick with it.
@danielkirkland33663 жыл бұрын
In a way I think they are agreeing Dave is showing a neutral shot here I.e ball in the middle of stance Phil however likes to decide is he going high or low and doesn’t like being stuck somewhere in between I would listen to Dave over Phil as he teaches people from all different levels Phil has huge natural talent, practices every day and could probably hit solid short game shots with any old setup or mechanics Phils insight is great to read but it’s just an insight on how he hits these shots - probably ain’t the best way for the average golfer

every great short game teacher has his own opinion . Pelz claims to teach Phil yet Phil's teachings on the subject are totally different. The basic truth is you have to have the handle ahead thru impact and past the lead leg without letting it break down. if your hand eye coordination is good enough to manipulate ball position , great, if not stick to the basics of what he says at the beginning

Phil Mickelson says NEVER position the ball in the middle of your stance when chipping. Who is right?
@Redskies4535 жыл бұрын
I go with Phil. I don't find it hard to hit off the front foot as long as I keep the hands and weight forward. Pelz is right too tho. If you try to make a normal swing with the ball forward you will come up on it and blade it. I don't like to open up more than a little so I just put it forward. You have to choose between keeping the same swing or the same clubface setup. For me the open face gives me shanks and blades.

@bigknocker22644 жыл бұрын
Phil is right. Chipping is different than pitching. Pelz is talking about pitching the ball and not chipping the ball. Pitching the ball requires the ball be placed in the middle of your stance in line (below) with one's sternum.. In chipping you need to play the ball off your back ankle. If you play the ball in the middle of your stance on a chip shot, you'll need to sway forward in order to catch the ball first.
