You put the collar on inside out. It’s not a gasket to seal against the backside of the control valve face plate. The conical shape of the collar is meant to not allow water to trace behind the wall, it directs it back to the face of the wall board. So the narrower diameter of the collar goes inside, the larger diameter with the smaller ridge lip goes out at the face of the wall. The way you have it the lip sticks out well past the finished wall surface and will inevitably get distorted when you mount your face plate bracket (that gets secured flush with the finished wall). This will allow any water that reaches the collar to trace through and down the backside of the finished wall, as like electricity, water follows the path of least resistance. The cone shape is meant to prevent the water from getting past the inner most ridge of the narrower part of the cone. The water would have to be forced with pressure against gravity to get past the narrower inner part of the rubber ring. The face plate prevents direct spray so the water can only follow the rule of gravity and least resistance. Just my two cents.

Not an expert on the mixing valve collar, but tend to agree with TJ. I simulated a leak and did a drip test, holding the collar over the sink and dropping water with a teaspoon from above onto the top of the fleece and on the lip. With the lip on my side, some water is shed to the sides, and some fall into the hole. With the lip facing away from me, water does not get in the hole since the lip slopes downwards from the inside diameter at the back towards the outside diameter at the front. The only scenario I can think of where the lip should face you is if the mixing valve protrudes out of the wall and fits tightly on the inner diameter of the lip to form a seal. But even then, I don't see the point.

I put in wedi board for the backsplash on a soaker tub 4 years or so ago. I believe Then the correct procedure was to notch half the width of the two boards and lock them into each other (top board notch back half bottom board notch front half out. Also believe I did this for the side seams too. When did this all change? Putting in a shower soon and don't want to mess up.

There are some videos of guys installing this inside out with the thicker portion inside, and the thinner wide mouth area on the outside. It would be helpful if there was instruction from Wedi on the packaging indicating which side faces out. It is my opinion the portion that protrudes the farthest is the "out" side. Thoughts?

QUESTION - When you join two Wedi boards together with the Wedi screws to "pinch" them in, do you place the screw hole right at the join seam or through one of the boards?
@HomeRepairTutor5 жыл бұрын
through the joint so the washer spans both boards
@TW-il4vy5 жыл бұрын
@@HomeRepairTutor Thanks. I thought putting screws right at the joint might cause a bit of seam separation, so thought may be you placed the screw hole right near the edge of one of the boards while grabbing the other board with two of the washer teeth. At least it looked like it on some of the seams Steve put up on the video. Probably won't matter too much one way or another...

Great video! Steve looks super skillful! I like everything about the wedi system but how do you install a frameless shower enclosure and attach to wedi foam curbs? I haven't seen any useful hints how this should be done. Foam is weak for drilling into and many frameless enclosures have brackets that need to be screwed into the base. Any hints or ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@HomeRepairTutor5 жыл бұрын
we get this question a lot, the most ideal situation is to add 2x4 blocking in the stud wall before adding Wedi backer boards. Place the extra 2x4s in the position where the shower door or glass will be located. Then, and this isn't perfect, add glass u-channel by drilling through the tile/Wedi and anchoring it into the studs. Apply 100% silicone in the screw holes, bottom of u-channel, and side of u-channel in the shower. Support bars can be used to stabilize large glass panels and they need to be factored into the glass planning phase as well as the shower surround.

Wedi still not convinced on this system, those small adhesive lap joints make me feel uncomfortable. and the foam board, because it has the ability to compress, unlike the old conventional system,thoe little over time will fatigue and fail eventually even conventional systems especially with water intrusion through the grout and mortar bed if they have fatigue. The alleged benefits of the Wedi system are not enough to get me to change from the old tried and true system. I have demoed quite a few houses that were 75 to 80 years old and the showers even with broken tiles cracked mortar still held up no leaks, hot-mop on tin pans or mortar, or even lead pans lasted.

I wasnt a fan of this video details matter folks the fasteners all willy nilly maybe its just me but The fasteners not being straight and kind of random made me cringe sure you wont see them behind the tile but this is the difference between a professional install and a diy or a contractor that doesn’t care for me when you use words like “about 10” which is it is it 10 or 10 and a 1/16 or is it 9 an 15/16”??? I didn’t like the niche either it’s too narrow and probably will be a b&tch to tile and just an awkward size and location I didn’t like how he just scabbed peices In and dropping and stepong on fasteners it’s great the product is forgiving but folks again you want a contractor that is carful so punctures don’t happen in the first place yes time is money but I don’t think you need to go warp speed either take your time put out quality other wise the install was “okayish”
