I had Respighi’s “Pines Along the Appian Way” going through my head while watching this video! As a professional musician I have performed this piece several times but didn’t realize how accurately Respighi painted a musical picture of Rome, and especially the Via Appia, through his marvelous music until I actually went to Rome and beyond in Italy. This series on the Via Appia is fantastic!

The bike is great for first miles / but we highly suggest a car for the rest. Much of the route is just too dangerous

I read the entire via appia to brindisi has been proposed for unesco protection and special restoration funding. Probably includes the taranto route, but maybe bari alternate route too.

Yes, a great initiative. Our trip was on our mind for quite some time earlier / glad the videos are done (filmed this summer) in time to coincide with the unesco site proposal. There is a lot of work to be done. A lot of signage is necessary in many places.

There seems to be quite a funny typo at 6:05, "Pontine Martius" - a mixture of "Pontine Marshes" and "Campus Martius". I find "paludes" as a translation of "marshes" into Latin.

Where was the engineering? "They built a canal." Two history majors, one with an engineering career. How did they drain the swamp, what about the malaria? If the donkeys pulled conveyances on the canal, how did they do that? Was the conveyance barge like, or more of a raft? How deep is the canal? Were the donkeys placed on either side of the canal or were they in the front and the canal is very narrow. This raises more questions than answers. Which of my questions can't be answered? Thanks!

They drained the area with a series of canals, most of which are not preserved. Malaria remained a problem throughout antiquity, though reduced through the Roman drainage project. It returned post- antique, and the issue wasn't resolved until Fascist intervention 1928-1939. There are some images of the barges pulled via ropes - by donkeys on a path along the canal (- instead, along the Tiber River, from Ostia to Rome, barges were pulled by oxen or slaves).
