When I first went to sea as an Engineer in the early 70s, the shipping company would not supply oxy/acetylene sets or arc welding sets, because they were "dangerous". Instead we had huge brass blowlamps, bigger then the one you have there. They probably had about a 1 gallon tank of kerosene in them. We used to light it with cotton waste soaked in kerosene. If the vapouriser was not hot enough, huge jets of flaming kerosene would shootout, with flaming drips dropping on all and sundry. In the meantime the cotton waste, sat on top of the gallon of pressurised kerosene would be acting like mount Etna, sending its own sparks and molten lava down the body and round the handle of the blowlamp. American Marines could have used it to clear machine gun positions on Iwo Jima. And the company called that safe. At about the same time I finished my Cadetship in 1977, they had decided to fit portapacks and diesel engined arc welders on the ships. Usually I was the only one who had done any welding training and I ended up doing all of the welding on most of the ships I sailed on. But those blowlamps were still there, tucked away, "just in case."

Love the antics with the blow lamp….🤣

Old blow lamps are fearsome sods. As a cadet at sea I remember flashing one up in the ships workshop, the flame shot the full width of the workshop and set off the fire alarms. I was not popular....

I had the same micrometer as an apprentice toolmaker it was stolen many years back now retired after 50 years all the best from Saskatchewan Canada

G'day John excellent video. The majority of my Imperial Micrometers are Moore & Wright, which have never let me down. The only thing with checking & adjusting, because of the nature & shape, especially in cooler climates etc, the Micrometer should be at hand temperature, because it could grow or expand to warm temperatures. There could be .001 ++ difference Ted

There's usually a small well around the base of the valve where it goes into the canister that you leak fuel from the valve into and ignite to heat up the valve, but that's before everyone had a propane torch 😀

I expect there is some debris in the tank. So I would swill it out. Also get a jet pricker. You will get their John! ( have various ones of these on my channel and I do use them)

Interesting stuff. I look forward to seeing the "lamp" in action. I think it would be handy for weeds and the like. ...no channel hits 100k without showing cats at some point. Cooking episode? Feed one at work?

Doing my best to help with the subscriptions John, but my missus wants to know why some owld Geordie bloke keeps popping up on her phone and tablet ! Saw one of those old Primus "prickers" in a junk shop the other week, took me right back to Tilley lamps during the "Winter of discontent" I probably should have bought it the way things are going ? 😂

Anyone know if you can run household heating oil through these old blow lamps?
