"Levi doesn't care if people die!" The very first scene of Levi in both anime and manga involves him comforting a dying soldier. Mr Guy knows nothing about the character he claims to idolize.

I think it's much more likely that the OP is exaggerating / making stuff up to misrepresent someone that they clearly disliked on a personal level for the crime of being interested in Imperial Japan than it is that someone who was inspired by Levi Ackerman would create a character that behaves nothing like him.
@davidtherwhanger6795

@@eyeofbraille4659 That could be said of any OP as we are only getting their side of the story. And I do know there are people out there that behave, think, or act nothing like who they claim to emulate. So I can't automatically discount OP's story either. Ultimately we choose to either believe or disbelieve these stories based on our own experiences and if the OP made any changes mid story that do not make any sense to us. In this one I do find it believable as I have talked with people before that are in fact thinking just like Mr. Guy. Having only a passing knowledge of anything and acting as if they are portraying it perfectly. These people are usually juveniles that haven't matured or studied anything, regardless of their actual age.

That opening description actually just gave me an amazing idea for a character. Ahem.. “As the tavern doors swing open, you see a figure standing out in the pouring rain, his face hidden under a black hood. Sitting atop his back is a greatsword, slightly stained with blood. As he enters the tavern, he looks around at all the people as their eyes were all on him. And then, as he sits at a table, he pulls down his hood, and his face is revealed.. the man is a fluffy snow owlin with big amber eyes, looking around nervously at the people staring at him, as if the last thing he wanted was any sort of social confrontation” Basically, he’s a Owlin warrior who appears super edgy at first, but in reality he’s a not so subtle socially awkward good boy

Levi literally told another soldier "no you can't go back for your friends body because it would put the regiment in unnecessary danger." And, to the same guy, "I know we don't have your friends body, but here's his patch. I know what it's like to lose friends." Edgelord gonna edgelord though.
@Silburific
@Silburific 2 жыл бұрын
And that scene is even _more_ poingnant because it's heavily implied that the patch actually belonged to a member of _Levi's_ squad, most likely Petra- a girl that looks incredibly similar to another girl (Isabel) who was Levi's surrogate little sister and who was the first person he lost to the Titans. Levi is, hands down, the best written, most nuanced character in AoT. But nah, edgleords just see him kill things epicly while spouting one-liners, and that's cool. The same Levi who was horrified and disgusted when he learned that Titans are actually humans because it means he's been murdering people all these years.

"I'm a soldier, so long as I kill that's all that matter." No, he's a warmonger. There is an age old saying, "Soldiers fight for the love of what's behind them, not the hate for what's before them." That guy just wanted a power trip and used anime as a blueprint. Also, most "Dark edgy" anime protagonists do care about people, more than not, they care a lot more than most. It's an "X" element in their story to make them guarded, hardened or withdrawn, that the allure of their story is finding out what happened and watching their slow road to rediscovering their lost humanity/happiness or making their suffering worth the price by doing something that betters the world around them. Guy did not seek to make the world a better place. He just wanted to be an overpowered bully who got praise for acting on his whims and wants, with little to no negative backlash for his actions. He's more akin to Homerlander from the boys than any "dark, brooding" anime protagonist.

Eh, depends on what you believe. The real saying is “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” ― G.K. One of the greatest military thinkers, a 19th century German, said war is about destroying the will of the people and that it is a tool to foce one's wishes onto others. ^ A man who saw his country destroyed by the French, then had a hatred for them ever since and took part in the bloody battles against them with the Prussians, British, Dutch and so on.

So, writer's pro tip. You can have your character have the sad backstory, and their edgy moments. But if you don't balance it out with something light hearted and silly, it comes off as That Guy. For example: Batman, dark, brooding, super good at violence. But every chance he gets, the guy he arrests is given a chance for sympathy. He hires the ones who had a half decent motive for their crimes. He donates to the cause of the helpless. He refused to use the weapon Amanda Waller gave to stop a reality warping child. Raven from Teen Titans, edgy, moody, ends the world, but also dresses up as Robin with her friends and watches little pony cartoons. She makes jokes, she shows concern when someone she knows gets hurt. In short: Do not be a war machine of a character.

It doesnt even have to be that all you really need is character development if your character is super edgy and dark and brooding at some point you have to develop them beyond that its ehy a character like guts from berserk or cloud from ff7 are so loved because you see them at their lowest points but you also see them develop into better people along the way if your character just hates life and wants to kill everything all the time no one will care about them or like them if they stay that way for most of the story and then only grow as a person at the very end

I have a solution for problematic characters (from a DM's perspective): A carriage appears out of nowhere, out of it jumps a lot of clowns, too many to fit in the carriage, but that is what happens. They then grab the problem character and drags him into the carriage, before departing, never to be seen again (hopefully). If another player has high perception, they may notice that the problem character starts to pale while the nose gets bigger and turning red. The DM may try to do clown laughter for dramatic effect.

They are kicked from my table right there on the spot between games. The next game has my self-incert NPC having cut them into a plater of food and eating them. I offer his body cut into pieces to the table. My favourite reaction was a girl laughing as she says "Holy damn I need a dipping sauce for this" and sits down to eat the guy. This girl was a lesbian and married and the guy had some gross messages sent to her... van we leave it at that. In my humble opinion, hardships of war should actually *soften* the character. Most of the war veterans aren't some sort of cold-blooded beasts devoid of emotions, in fact, quite the opposite, being under gunshots makes them appreciate life much more, despite the fact that they are often struggling to reintegrate into society. I've once met a man who fought in Afghanistan and he was one of the sweetest people I've ever talked to - he was funny, kind and intelligent. When somebody asked him about his war experience, though, he suddenly stopped talking, thought about something for a moment, his face turned stone, and he said "Please, let's not talk about that. War is meaningless. You're lucky, kid, that now its a peacetime". It resonated in me so much, I can't even explain. Just the expression on his face. Those people suffer greatly and almost no one remembers fondly their "glory days" or thinks that what they did was right. For them it is a deep wound which cannot truly heal. However, edgelords think otherwise and for whatever reason praise the war like its something cool. It's dumb and fucking disgusting

Okay, I'm not a huge AOT fan but even I know that Levi CARES A WHOLE LOT about people dying. His entire character revolves around him caring deeply for his subordinates but showing it as very harsh tough love, because he doesn't want them to die. He pushes them to do better, think faster, get stronger and work as a team for their survival and the survival of the innocent civilians. The only people he doesn't care die are traitors and the nobility. I guess the guy is way too obsessed with imperialism, war and action sequences to even acknowledge the most obvious nuances (that even a non fan can see) of the shows he likes.

Most of them like the story and allegory/ nuance more or on par with the action, some like the action more but still understand the deeper parts of the show... Then you have fans like Mister Guy, who thinks one of the most important, tragic and complex characters is just a bada** killing machine with no emotion while fetishizing the imperialism allegory that's revealed to literally be the source of everything wrong in that world... Mister Guy is that same butthole you would encounter in a discord or some other chat site that would crap on you for not liking "the right anime", that you're a fake anime lover or a wuss if edgelord bloodbath isn't your preferred genre. Just as a general PSA for anyone who wants to play dark and brooding characters: You need to work extra hard to make them included into the party, not less. And dark & brooding only works if they are also the characters with the best calibrated moral compass of the whole group. Think more along the lines of "I've lost everyone and don't want to feel emotionally attached, but I'll be damned if I let anyone else feel that same way." I saw it being pulled off effectively, but the character was also a fucking saint underneath the whole facade.

In my second campaign of DnD; still relatively new to the awesomeness of DnD. It was a Call Of chuthulu one, apoplectic, etc. Had a edgy brooding character that was basically a back ally street doctor which wore a plague doctors mask. Reason? He was severally chemically burned on majority of his body and was self-conscious. Was socially outcasted in his usual stuff. So he shut down emotionally. Didn't really reach out. However I balanced this by him having a very... dumb and strange potoo pet bird. Which was social. And often forced him into awkward moments as a comedic stance when it needed to be. There was also more sensitive moments to show this wasn't just a edgy, brooding character. He was anxious and nervous about eating or drinking. Because to do so means removing the mask and he's scared of others seeing his face. He's insecure. It made a LOT of room for improvement and very heart warming moments when Rusty; my character did open up. And became more confident again.

I did try to convince him to let me grab them as I moved past them and that was a nope. Also had Improvised Weapon to make them actually effective. Could run through an enemy group and it was like tossing them into a blender, so maybe more Majima's Breaker style? Counterattack was a great one for single-combat scenarios as well as Deflect Arrows for range, etc. Other than that, mainly just real fun role-playing the actual fights. Like, I would not go "I attack this target with my fists" or the like, I'd be going "I kick my target's left knee and use my second attack to uppercut him in the jaw." Had some pretty cool martial-arts movie moments if the dice went my way, or sometimes when they didn't. That particular pattern had me miss the second strike once, so the DM was describing how the guy felt the wind off my fist as it passed less than an inch from his face as he leaned back to dodge. I'm absolutely placing blame on the DM there. They absolutely should not have allowed him to attempt to try his fuck up again. He could piss, moan, and whine like a toddler in a tantrum, he should not have been allowed to try again. DM could have made it that the blast missed, didn't hit any villagers or players, and the wraith gave him a good lashing. There you go, edgelord, you have a cool new scar on your character with an edgy backstory that you tried to save helpless villagers to go with it. Don't let a player "kill 5 children" to attack a wraith. Just use normal combat rules and say "you have to get over there to do anything, wait for your initiative." Also, if you're not going to play into the fantasy of the player then how can you blame them for doing it all themselves? I get it I'm not a big anime guy either, but if he wants to play a samurai, lean into that and tell him stuff like, "let's come up with the samurai code so you can be that in this world" Don't fight your players for their character, try to work with them so their character is perfect for your game. Rude is rude though. some folks have ADHD and stuff, but even then we have to put our foot down. Figure out ways to deal with the condition whatever works. But whatever you come up with has to let you pay attention to the game. if your player doesn't want to do that they don't get to play. It's not fair to the other players.

This! the dm have many chances to stop the guy, like giving him disadvantage when attacking the owlbears because of the vision and the forest. With the villagers as well.. Although annoying as the player may be, this is partly the dm fault for sure.

Ooooh the misinterpretation of Levi’s character got me heated. CritCrab put it perfectly. Levi always tried to avoid excess death if it could be helped. He mourns for every fallen soldier in his own way. He was visibly upset when he discovered the Titans were humans once. He is absolutely nothing like this dude’s one dimensional D&D character. I’m surprised this character was allowed to continue existing, this doesn’t sound like an evil campaign.
@Apexpolarbear
@Apexpolarbear Жыл бұрын
Although he rarely shows it, Levi has a strong sense of morality and empathy. One of his most defining characteristics is the great value he places on preserving human life; this is especially shown when it was revealed that all Titans might have once been human themselves. The thought that he had unknowingly been killing humans all this time disturbs him greatly. -the Attack on titan wikipedia page about Levi's personality

that owlbear moment brought back some memories from my first campaign... we had gotten ourselves in a brutal fight against owlbears and a bunch of boars (lvl 4 or 3 iirc, that gm just wanted to kill us, every single random fight was one hair away from tpk, not very fun). a baby owlbear was left behind and we had an almost 2h argument of what to do with it until the barbarian in our group finally had enough and killed it before anyone could react.

A few years ago, I came up with a character who seemed to think he was the main character (he was) and that he had plot armor (he didn’t). Mr. Guy’s actions (killing a monster that wasn’t hostile and attacking an enemy they didn’t have to fight, at least yet) would easily have been something he would’ve done to get his group into so much unnecessary trouble, so that made me laugh. 😂 The difference is that the character was supposed to be funny, mainly because he also would SOMEHOW get them out of trouble. The idea I had was for a comedy. He wouldn’t hurt the innocent or his friends just to take down an enemy.

I remember I wanted to make a character inspired by Killua from Hunter x Hunter so what did I do? They were the heir to a family of assassins that lived on a mountain. That's where the similarities ended. I was a shadow Monk (later changed to Mercy) and everyone was adopted into the family from the abandoned and forgotten. It was about taking something I liked and fleshing it out to be something for real and unique. If you didn't know any better you wouldn't really be able to look at my water genasi Monk and see Killua.

The story goes: Edgelord playing a ‘traveller from afar’ equipped with his pride, his honor, the most dangerous weapon around, a Katana (of course), is playing and less than ten encounters in the DM and the players are tired of it. So, the DM puts in a Rust Monster. Katana is destroyed, and it is thousands of miles to anywhere he can purchase or find another person to actually make another one. It is said that: ‘the subsequent whining was almost poetry’, and the player eventually learn he had to play in a team.

Every time I hear one of these stories I can't help but wonder a couple things. I get D&D is the one everyone knows, but if they want to do weeb-tastic anime nonsense why not play any of the myriad of games that actually support that kind of playstyle? Have they ever actually read or seen anything about feudal Japan? Last I checked Samurai were a highly trained, highly educated caste of nobles, not blood-drunk berserkers. Doods, watch some Kurosawa or something.

ok but when was the last time you've ever seen an ad for any other game besides 5e, I barely see it on r/Lfg and the facebook groups I see. This sort of playstyle is aight in OVA and BESM because those are anime games and are fun. Also its imperial japan not feudal japan. Hell they had a tradition of cutting random fuckwads on the street. They also could be warlords and what not they were highly educated caste of nobles but that also made them blood thirsty.

I'll admit, I do take inspiration from anime for a lot of my characters for derivative work. I'm currently playing a Plasmoid Warlock/Monk who initially had a rimuru token before I drew one myself and used Mask of Many Faces to give himself a human appearance, with a similar laid back lackadaisical attitude. The difference: 1. I was created in a lab and can summon the other experiments, and have a WILDLY different backstory 2. I'm not an op god, in fact all I can really do is tank damage and punch a couple times And to be completely honest, I think if these weebs, if they want to draw from any anime characters to copy, go something like Goku or Luffy who actually CARE ABOUT PLAYING WITH THE PARTY and dont cut themselves with every word. At least THEN it would be TOLERABLE

Attack on Titan is complicated and has a lot to say about conflict, but you can't reduce it to "war is hell". It's one of the only series I've ever seen where one of the most insidious villains is a pacifist whose pacifism is specifically what leads to a great and protracted injustice.
@paradoxtatorstudios9681

The main point is war is hell, yes, but more then that; how villains and victims are often one and the same, and lead into a cycle where monsters create victims who become monsters in turn; the nuances of the human condition and how every single one of us has cruelty and compassion built into us; how circumstances lead to killing somebody who didn't have to, or deserve to, die; how sometimes you have to become a murderer just to survive; how war is not just cruel and nasty and unfair, but the world itself is. (I am aware that you did not watch it and couldn't possibly do this in detail, just thought this was a good place to put this mini sum up lol)
