Ok so I'm actually trying to collect some data too, so if you're willing to help let me know where you're from and tell me how "accepted" it is to watch anime where you're from. Like in Japan it's completely normal but I heard it's considered childish in some countries Edit: ok now I just figured out something, so there are some people who wouldn't initiate conversations about anime though they watch a lot of anime and I was curious why, but according to your comments it seems talking about anime or watching anime itself is considered childish/cringe in some countries huh, interesting

As for research: Note that this is from someone older than KZbin (2002 squad): Anime is generally just treated as any other cartoon would by the masses, and in Secondary School people were open about watching animes like Assassination Classroom, and never got targeted for it* as far as I know. Granted, nobody exerted their weebness, either, they were just acting like normal people watching anime because most animes are pretty solid. * I was in a Grammar School, aka the post-primary-school-exam-passers-only secondary school variant, though tbh with some peoples' behaviour there I don't think this variable would have affected things all that much. Note: Watching cartoons as an adult is... it depends, really, how you get perceived.

Indonesia has a lot of weebs, even the word "Wibu" ("weeb" in Indonesian pronunciation) is also included in the Indonesian Dictionary, which is a term for someone who likes and is interested in Japanese culture, especially from anime And yes, Naruto was the most famous anime at that time, especially for children born in the 90-2000s, the reason was because Naruto aired at primetime hours where children got time to watch tv, Naruto also aired daily (usually Monday-Friday), compared to other anime which only appear on Sundays, this makes Naruto's popularity among children wider

As a Swedish person who enjoys anime, manga, as well as some other Japanese things, I have been asked if I’m Asian, in a situation where my likes were never mentioned. However, I think the whole old anime thing is because of watching Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle, and things like that as part of our education (in my personal experience) as part of our art classes, which was my first experience with anime outside of Pokémon. Then again, my teacher might just have been a Weeb, himself.

I'm from France and it's 100% accepted. From what the americans would call "nerd" to "jock", everyone watch anime. Is not seen in a bad light. Anime like One Piece and other, it's so well knows in France that everyone, even those who doesnt watch anime, know. It's not small or niche in France. That like saying, "yeah I like action movies" or something like that. Also, for your information, Anime was the youth of my father (hes 50). My father legit had all the tomes (so I read them. Several times), also anime like Albator, and the such in DVD. Just to give you an exemple; That not something that got popular trough the internet, like in the US. Also, anime convention and the such are more like for family instead of "weeb" only. Most of the times, in France, people thats likes animes will be interested and dive deeper into the Japanese culture. You dont even know how many Japan Crazy (Fou du Japon; In French, this has a good sense) there is. Those you see are just a fraction of it. In my highschool, there was a petition to hire a Japanese Teacher to teach Japanese as a third language. I could talk hours about it. Also. If you know how to draw manga style (memories from when I was in Junior High and High School) it's make you someones cool. Even very shy peoples who draws during break in the courtyard had like 5 to 10 peoples watching them draw. Some of them were extremly popular among the other students.

As a Swedish person whoh has been to Japan alot due to my sister studying/living there, I agree, there are a surprising amount of similarities between Swedish (also scandinavians in general) and Japanese people ( In my experience at-least). I have a crazy and probably false theory, that it stems from both cultures being rooted in a warrior and honorbound culture, vikings and samurai respectively. Although it probably has more to do with standard of living or pure coincide...
@nomoretwitterhandles

Those are some solid theories tbh! Here in America we don't have much "honor" tied to our culture, as we are a newer country to begin with, but I wish we did have that sense of honor to protect here. Yeah, its not unrealistic, althou we haven't really had much of a viking culture for the past 800 years or so.. We've been a monarchy for a very long time. Why we feel so much similarities with Japanese is probably also because of Jantelagen.. the unwritten law/rule of "don't believe you are better then anyone else" which has given us genuine swedes a very respectful approach to others. The way we try not to inconvenience others etc.

I think it's because of the extreme weather in the north if Scandinavia. The Jante Law. Similar to the extreme typhoon and earthquakes in Japan. Need to stay together, don't stand out. But this has changed a lot in Scandinavia. People actually say what they think.
@Destinum
@Destinum Жыл бұрын
Linking it to warrior culture seems like a bit of a stretch, but even if there's some merit to that, the vikings have nothing to do with it. I'd say the main similarities are that both societies value humility and respect for other people, but the origins for those behaviors are completely different: In Japan, it stems from a collectivist view on society, where the well being of the group is prioritized over that of the individual, whereas in Sweden it stems from things like strong worker unions creating a cultural identity of equality. All of this leads to an interesting dynamic where surface-level behavior is very similar, but the underlying cultural values behind that behavior are basically the complete opposite. Schools in each respective country are an interesting reflection of this: Japanese schools post grades openly for anyone to see and require students to wear uniforms. In Sweden, doing either of these things is straight up illegal.

As an older German weeb I felt pretty well represented. I'm normally quite serious if it's about doing something or fullfilling a task. But in my freetime and with the right people I can go plus ultra weeb (including acting like an idiot and making a fool out of myself). So I think you did a pretty good job with your observations. Regarding acceptance of anime I have to say that it changed a lot in the last 15 - 20 years. As a fan of manga/anime in the late 90s, early 2000s it wasn't that easy. It was hard to get animes and games and they were expensive af. There were only some shown in the middle of the night on smaller TV channels. And they were mostly aduld oriented. So for most people "Animes" were those strange foreign animated movies full of s*x and violence. All that shifted with time and by now the weeb culture is pretty much accepted and normal here in Germany.

About the swedish weeb, that just how we swedes behave in general, even more so if they are from the northern parts of sweden. About anime in sweden, I think it's gotten a lot more popular recently, but if you grew up in the 80's and 90's you basically watched silverfang, space adventure cobra, ryu the cave boy or starzinger and later on ninja scroll, akira and maybe some ghibli movies. Back in those days you could only get anime on VHS tapes, most of the older shows were badly dubbed to swedish and heavily edited.

As a french person, we have a large manga and anime presence in the country. A few anime and manga are actually from France. Hell, for a while, the government gave every kid around the age of 18 a 200€ voucher to spend on cultural “products” on a government website. France (and Belgium) has historically had a large comics culture so manga fits right in. I was living in Paris in the late 90s/early 00s, and the manga section in bookstores went from just a few titles to entire walls of it. I'd hang out and read a bunch of them in the store for an hour (they were cool with that) then buy 2-3 books for my own collection. As for anime, technically we were raised on it - morning TV shows had lots of anime series imported from Japan, decades before it became famous in the US

As an Indonesian, I can say that Naruto is the most favorite anime series because it is shown on TV almost every night. I used to always watch the series after school, I watched the whole series from Naruto SD to Naruto Shippuden finished.

As a Chinese weeb, I believe Sora is right, my friends and I own numerous amount of figures. In addition, I believe most Chinese weebs like to play rhythm games. After I have been living in Sweden for a long time, I became a Swedish-Chinese hybrid weeb XD

Bangladeshi viewer; I'm old now, so out of touch with the young generation, but back in my day, watching anime put you into one of two categories: Childish person who still watched cartoons as a 'grown-up'/teen OR man/woman of culture who knew how cool anime and Japan was. Even more exclusive was the manga club, which you only got into if you were rich or tech-savvy (scanlations). Afaik, however, there is another contingent of Japan fans in Bangladesh, whose connection is not through anime, but through Japanese cultural and philanthropic programmes. They want to go to Japan because it's seen as a wonderland of polite, hard-working people with impeccable manners and wonderful food (and beautiful women/handsome men).

2:02 As a Swedish person I have never felt so personally attacked by something I 100% agree with. History is super interesting and I don't even follow the new anime any more because I keep negatively comparing them to the old ones. What a bore! Small talk is uncomfortable, and being in people's face is unnatural unless you're close to them. That said, once a good conversation gets started things get really deep very quickly and can go on for hours. Usually over "fika".

@@priceostia6292 Ah! So sorry to hear that. No, Swedish people are just reserved and don't make friends very quickly. It's a cultural thing. Some debate that it's because we have historically been a very spread-out people so we have been cautious but cooperative neighbours rather than large close-knit villages. Swedish people generally do not shun, or at least I have not known many people who do that. I think most Swedish people have many acquaintances but few friends as a rule.

As an Indonesian who watched anime and read manga (not in Japanese) since i was a kid (pretty much babysitted by them), I wasn't really familiar about the concept of weeb term (or wibu as we say here). We didn't have that term before. Thank you for your content I finally understand more especially from different point of view.

In America, it has recently become "normal" for older kids and adults to watch anime. Due to the pandemic, a lot of people watched anime at home and people talk about it now on social media.

I was wondering how you would depict the German weeb. As soon as you yelled, I knew: yup, that's us lol. You did manage to sum up my kinda humor and overall personality though. Doing and saying very exaggerated things when goofing around but if it gets serious I (and many other Germans) just flip the switch and all kinds of humor are banished out of our faces.
