I love your videos and never miss an issue. I was a kid long before video games and remember spending hours playing with Lincoln Logs and erector sets. As an adult I play with expensive toys by Milwaukee, Dewalt and Powermatic.

Very interesting video, I’d like to make a little steam engine👍 As for the kids of today….. when my kiddy’s were young I was often in trouble with my “friends” for limiting TV and “Play Station” time to 1 hour per week, my wife and I encouraged our children to play outside, climb trees, play on swings and slides and jungle gyms, we also encouraged them to make things…… many years later( my kids both in their 30’s now) amaze their friends with the ability to wire a plug , make a cupboard , sew a hem or a button and much to our delight my son and daughter claim it is because we taught them these skills as children….. sorry for taking the liberty to brag about my kids😁❤

Many of the kids who were interested in that new toy had probably seen real steam engines running. They had a different world to be interested in. My Dad made himself a toy when he was a kid in the 40's. A car carved out of wood with amazing details like seats and spark plug wires. It's better than I could make as an adult.

I owned a couple of steam engines in my boyhood. I still have one that is home-built. That Weedon is a nice cross-head design. The walking beam design was an attempt to accomodate a longer piston stroke (more expansion). The only thing more useless than video games are tattoos. I guess it's time to revive the "Whiskey Rebellion" so we can get "likker" at Ace Hardware. It occurred a long, long time before OSHA. Best Regards.

I agree on the tattoos. I want to spend $.25 to see the tattooed man at the sideshow. He didn’t have a half of the tattoos that the customers at Walmart had. The other day I went to Casey’s for a cuppa coffee and I had to wait in line while a big lady in front of me showed off her fresh tattoo to the clerk. They talked for three minutes about it while I waited patiently with my anger building, lol.

Still have my dad's steam engine. Don't recall the name on it. It's been over 50 years since dad fired it up and us kids watched it run. It had an electric fire box on it lined in asbestos! The last time I checked the company was still in business and they offered for sale a replacement fire box for the steam engine. Need to get it inside from storage and revive it for my son. I'm surprised the neighborhood cats didn't come running when you were cleaning out the sardine tin. My worthless cat comes running when a tuna can or sardine can is open. Just the sound of the can gets her attention. She will lick it clean, too! As always, thanks for sharing! Ken

I have one of these little gems that a lady at church gave me 60 years ago when I was in 5th grade. The boiler has no markings but the whole setup looks very much like what you have. Mine no longer operates as the threads that hold the crank assembly on the flywheel shaft and the threads in the valve block that hold the tube from the steam chest are stripped. I used the boiler and engine a couple of times and when it was working it was a really neat machine.. The governor and whistle were missing when I got it. The steam tube has a threaded fitting that was also missing what I always assumed was a pressure gauge; I closed it off with a block of wood. The flywheel on mine also has a groove for the spring drive cable. I remember the Sears catalogs of the late 50's and early 60's showing tinplate toys in the genre that had toy operating shops driven by a small boiler that was fired with small tablets of some kind of dry fuel I was fortunate to have some prior knowledge about operating this toy since my father was a mechanical engineer and had training on steam engines and turbines. I remember him telling me about working with a steam turbine that used superheated steam, and how the workers checked for leaks with a rag on a stick. The pushed the rag ahead of them as they walked along the steam lines and if the rag caught fire there was a leak there, the lesson being that steam has an incredible amount of heat in it and one needs to be very careful around it. Thanks for another interesting video Mr. Pete. My dad once told a scary story about a job he had during the depression with a crew that prepared cross ties for a local railroad. The sawmill was powered by a stationary steam engine with a similar ball type governor powered by a leather belt. As long as the belt stayed on the pulleys the engine ran its steady governed speed, but if it broke or slipped off it would quickly speed up with the quick likelihood of the large flywheel flying apart from centrifugal force. He said, "If that happens it takes a mighty brave man to go up and shut that thing down!"

Very scary, they called it a runaway engine. In later years, they change the design so that the engine would slow down rather than speed up when the belt broke.

I bought almost that exact model at an auction . It was partially disassembled in a box of other junk that I got for $1. After bringing the box home I found all the pieces were in the box (except the Governor) and was able to put it back together in running condition.

I always wanted to make a woodshop extension too. In fact, he brought his girlfriend over a couple weeks ago and we were running it. He isn't much into video games...

Back in the 50’s I had a small steam engine. I played with it for hours. We had white solid fuel pellets, and I would stuff extras in the fire box to get more steam. I have as a teenager before my dad would allow a tv in the house. His reasoning was it stifled creativity in kids.

Thank you, very interesting. Your father was a wise man. We did not have a TV till I was 13 or 14. My dad would not buy us store-bought toys because you would not learning anything playing with them. Other than Lincoln logs, tinker toys, and erector set.

The sharp bits weren't filed off, they could burn themselves, they could set their clothes on fire, they could get snagged in spinamathings. The smart kids awoke to possibilities and the dumb ones learnt something that could keep them alive. Maybe. Keep doing what you do, Mr Pete.

In the 1950s I had a model steam engine made in USA here in the U.K. It was designed to run on solid Meta fuel, but as I got older I converted it to run on coal gas ( town gas ). Here in the U.K. denatured alcohol is usually called methylated spirits, as the ethyl alcohol has methyl alcohol and a violet dye added to it to make it unsuitable to drink.

I loved this! I have my deceased dad's Weiden vertical version of this that he had as a kid sitting on the mantle in my home. Dads is complete including the instructions that came with it. Several times when I was a kid dad fired it up for me and made it work. Of course tooting the whistle on both occasions. Thanks so much for sharing!

The Herring can was a great idea for the burner. I have the exact same engine sans burner and will give this a try on a rainy day when the rest of my projects are caught up. The last time I ran it, I took some of that Sterno canned heat stuff and spooned it out on a small oblong tin tray, about 3" x 6". With the flame going the whole length of the tray, it steamed pretty good. My Dad was of Swedish extraction and absolutely loved all of that canned, smoked, salted and otherwise preserved fish the Scandinavians are famous for. That didn't pass along genetically to me. My reaction has always been more like that of your dog. Should we ever meet, I'll tell you my lutefisk story. Very nice video and thanks for making it.

My dad and his family always talked about lutefisk. I tried it and never liked it. Sounds like we are very similar. And I have used a lot of that sterno over the years in my engines. I should have made a little oblong tray as you described. I can still see my dad eating herring all the way tall jar with a fork. Premium saltines on the side.

He was a school teacher/basketball coach, Mom was a homemaker, and on Saturday he stayed home while Mom took the car and went shopping with the neighbor. We were left to our own devices for the noon meal. I don't remember what I had, but Dad always had either herring or sardines with Premium saltine crackers. Right now, the smell of him opening that can has rushed back to me. Thanks for stirring up a pleasant old memory.

I really enjoy the steam engine videos and I hope you get to feeling better. When I was stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center we had a patient who had throat cancer and was unable to eat solid food. He was alive and well and subsisted solely on those nutrient drinks (Ensure) that you mentioned that Willie Nelson drinks. Also, I have an 85yr old Uncle/Aunt that take ZERO medications, but are doing great physically, mentally, and emotionally. They take quite a few supplements (vitamins,) distill all of their water, drink Ensure, eat light but healthy food, and stay active. Also, I know that you (Mr. Pete) have mentioned in the past that you are a chronic insomniac just like me. I've found that drinking bone broth (you can buy it at Walmart in the soup aisle) greatly improves my sleep, but is also a good source of other nutrients like protein. I drink about 1/3rd of a container about 30 minutes before I lay down and the glycine in the bone broth helps me relax and sleep much better. I don't mean to "stick my nose where it doesn't belong," I just figured that these things might improve your health. Best of luck.

An ideal can for burners would be the cans for Camel Snus. Relatively expensive to buy the tobacco just to get the can, but anyone who uses it probably has dozens, if not hundreds, of empties laying around. They do have a little rubber gasket that would probably burn up and make a stink, but they're great for making little first-aide kits and for storing fire starter stuff for camping since they're water tight.

On video games. As a private music teacher, parents (and students) would contact me regarding lessons. My first question became, "do you play video games?". Seems that they were perfectly willing to spend hours a day with the games and little if any time practicing their music. I refused to teach any kids who answered 'yes'. Parents would be upset etc etc. I gave up teaching music eventually. Now I can't find a kid who wants to learn shop work either. The pursuit of talent and skill has been replaced by the smart phone. Kids are living life via proxy. I still refuse to carry a smart phone myself.

Fun furnace blast from the past. Those kinda toys were right up my alley - right there with the real chemistry sets they sold over 50 years ago (in which all the ingredients were not edible). The steam engine you said: "Not good for kids to play with" --- Yeah like you said kids are overprotected, so they can't be trusted with anything dangerous. Glad we grew up when we could still learn and play with things that were not always "safe and sane". One needs to learn how to respect tools and machines that can bite back ! You mentioned about the alcohol sometimes is not visible when burning. As a kid I raced RC pylon racers -- we used almost full nitro (> 80%) at times - I had a tank burst and the plane just starts changing color - you could NOT see the flames -- only heat waves and a plane turning to char. LOL. Always enjoy your videos. and your 10 cent commentary on our dollar. So True... RH

That is a fantastic engine. As a child of the early 1950's I used to dream about having a steam engine I'd see in the Christmas catalogs. With three brothers the thing would have probably lasted a minute because boys will be boys and the parts would be lost in no time. Great video.

Sterno has been around for quite some time now. They make teacandles that might work for your steam engine, and they are used for heating tea, and are in an aluminum base, and are inexpensive.

I know you are joking about not being able to get denatured alcohol in California, you’re just rattling my cage, but the price of it has gone way way up here in Illinois even though we have a huge alcohol plant within 20 miles of my house. And they doubled the size of it three years ago since I went through it.

A toy from back when lawyers had little say in what you could have as a kid, the Wilesco steam toys were still being sold by Sears when I was a kid but they also sold boats, outboards and firearms. Wish I was a kid again and that Sterno can ( gelled alcohol) is only good for keeping food warm, barely.

I eat those Kippered hearings frequently especially when I am in the RV working and it passes lunch time, they are very satisfying. Ethel alcohol (vodka) is denatured with a rotating list of denaturing agents agents. To make it harder to separate them. Ethel alcohol is added to gasoline to reduce your MPG rating. Wood alcohol (Methanol) is what blinds bums. Little engines are cute. Ron W4BIN

Here in the UK there's a company called Mamod that's been making miniature steam engines for many years and still does; I believe they're still made in the UK which is a rarity. When I was little my father and I used to play with their traction engine model- remember patiently waiting for the steam pressure to build up. Incidentally, I don't think there's anything wrong with videogames in moderation; it's a pastime no different to watching a film or reading a book. The key word there is moderation.

Very interesting! I never get tired of watching those little steam engines :) Also, the larger ones, like UP locomotives or large steam engines that used to power line shafts and sawmills. We have a "dummy governor" in New York too!! There seems to be a lot of them around lately... I love those little engines and its truly a sad world where videogames rule the minds of our future generations. I'm extremely happy the rugrats in my life have a solid interest and passion for all things mechanical, loud and greasy and just a tad dangerous!!

I may be alone with my thinking but I think it’s good for kids to play with the old toys so they can learn some good lessons fast. Things like sharp edges can cut you or flames can burn you or if you drop things they will break and sometimes you can’t fix them. Nowadays their toys are a hunk of rounded plastic that have bright colors but you can throw them against a wall and later that same day you can still play with them. I don’t think they are learning anything except you don’t have to take care of your stuff. Was that an old can of Sterno?

I had a toy steam engine when I was 8 or 9 yrs old , match's, fire, steam pressure. and I am 68 now, never wore seat belts, bike helmets and had a chemistry set.

Great steam engine,my 7th grade teacher loaned me one with a electric burner (1959 circa) but what you might try is fabrication a propane burner,you'll be able to regulate the fire and make more steam psi without the risk of an alcohol fire,thanks for all you do🤗😎 😎

i have an electric one from my childhood. The sand filled resistor failed so i empteied the sand and fixed it, only problem is it has 50v to ground now lol. Say have you ever had canned tuna packaged in a jar? Without the edge of the can adding that taste it's quite better in glass. Prob why the pupster wanted no part of your burner manufacturing

I like my steam power to be a bit bigger like 1/8th scale or larger and ride on rails. Working on one for a friend that was started in the 1950's hopefully see it steamed up late this year or early next. got more in the pipeline as well no lack of projects

Good video on the Weeden. There must be a lot of those around, you see those for sale on ebay a lot. The steam dome, and some other parts were made of lead or some low melting point alloy of lead.

Outstanding video! I enjoyed it, a friend of mine when I was in the ( 4th grade 1965)got a steam engine for Christmas we used potassium nitrate tablets as a fuel. His uncle was a pharmacist and he was able to get it. We had a lot fun with engine. Building a miniature ski lift. Then a lift to raise hot wheel cars to the second floor of the house to let cars go back down. We learned a lot playing with that engine. I agree with you. It is better to build something and lean rather than play a video game. 😁🛫

Great engine I own a 14 from the 1930s that I am currently restoring. Never use a torch like that on the back of the boiler it can cause damage and you need a safety valve
