It can also be scaled down: I have a quailtractor on my lawn.😀 No moss, no weed, no fertilizer needed, and they clean out pests like gnats and small slugs. I never had a better lawn, never had less work, plus quails and eggs.

When we bought our property 6 years ago the weeds were head high even in the front yard. We had no animals at the time but just mowing and mulching the cuttings over the first year and a half got back most of the grass. We now have goats and use them to thin the wooded areas. Haven't gotten into sheep yet.

mcmillanfarms if you can manage goats then sheep will be a breeze.

@@PermaPasturesFarm21 LOL! My Honey has always said: "If your fence will keep in water and snakes, it'll hold a goat". We had a great small herd a few years ago, and escaping was never an issue. They LOVED it here, and didn't ever leave. Too busy eating weeds, brush, goat goodness. ;)

I love the white netting you use around your chickens. Is that electrified? I’m in Australia but I’d love to buy such a set up. Any ideas where to get one?

Almost 950 subscribers! Awesome to see how your channel is succeeding! We just got 4 Katahdan sheep so the information you are sharing is very timely 👍 Thanks for sharing great information. We have noticed awesome vegetation after the chicken tractors. Thanks for sharing your experience. How many acres are you rotating the sheep on? That was an awesome improvement.
@PermaPasturesFarm214 жыл бұрын
Conrad Homestead Katahdans are awesome! I’m so glad the information helps. We are rotating them on just 3 acres for now. In truth, we could use about 20 more of them to keep up with things but that will have to wait until I get up a perimeter fence and acquire a good livestock dog.

What kind of sheep and where did you get them? I’m in North Georgia with similar terrain.
@PermaPasturesFarm214 жыл бұрын
Jeanne Whitaker those sheep are a Katahdin/Saint Croix cross. We got them back in East Texas a few years back. We only use them for pasture/forest remediation and to act as Judas sheep for others we intend to eat. If you’re interested, we have a video on building that sheep tractor.

What are your thoughts on livestock guardian dogs? I noticed dogs in your videos. Are the dogs left with livestock?
@PermaPasturesFarm214 жыл бұрын
Conrad Homestead the dogs in these videos are pretty much house dogs. The only practical purpose they serve is as an early warning signal. We love livestock guardian dogs! Not only have we used Great Pyrenees to guard our stock, but they did a fantastic job in the orchards guarding against deer trying to destroy the trees. They were also fantastic with kids! We didn’t lose a single thing when they were on patrol. The only downside was the incessant barking at night. Once I get a woven wire fence around the entire perimeter of the property I’ll be getting another one ASAP.

Perma Pastures Farm we already have a house dog , also. I’m guessing the presence of any dog helps a little. We are loosing a duck every few days. We seem to have a vacuum of sorts, and some predator(s) have noticed. We are lacking some fencing also . Do you think placing a 3 month old Great Pyrenees pup in with sheep would be ok short term? How much land can one dog cover? Thanks for your help!
@conradhomestead45184 жыл бұрын
Perma Pastures Farm there are a few Great Pyrenees nearby. They can be horrible some nights, but I guess they are doing their job. Thanks again.
@PermaPasturesFarm214 жыл бұрын
Conrad Homestead any dog that doesn’t harm your livestock will definitely be a deterrent to any would be predators. If you have the option, you should definitely house your livestock dog along with the sheep. The sheep will initially ram him a few times but they will accept him after a few days. There’s a little bit of debate on how much ground a single dog can cover. In fact, some say that dogs should work in pairs. Back in Texas our dogs easily covered 30 acres.

It’s been some time ago but if I mentioned a Permaculture design course it was likely the online course with Geoff Lawton.
