Getting too embedded with a tramily can cause serious issues if you allow it to make you push yourself to far. In 2019 I worked SO hard to keep up with my tramily. I finally lost them after hot springs. By then I had damaged the tendons in my feet so badly that I had to go home. Please be careful with this and ONLY do what’s right for your body, even if you lose your hiking partner. You need to put yourself first or risk your hike. I learned this the hard way. -Festus-

So true to hike your own hike. I watched @BadBatHikes try to keep up and almost broke herself before she had the sense to just let them go.

In '17 it was pick up at least one candy wrapper or bar wrapper piece, in '18 it was three, in '19 it was 5. Not to be mean about it, but day hikers are the trashiest.

Great video, great start! I fully believe that if we each pick up one piece of trash and flick one stick off the trail per day, the trail will be the natural wonder we all dream it is.

Pushing big miles at the start to stay with other hikers is not a wise move. The best advice for beginner hikers that I ever heard was "Listen to your body!!!" Overuse injuries will end your hike. I successfully thru-hiked the entire trail last year. Class of 2022! I never did more than 10 miles a day the first month. I added miles slowly, from 8 to 10, then 10 to 13. I was doing 16-18 by the 3rd month. I stayed at 16-18 for most of trail. The White Mountains are a totally different beast than the rest of the trail and will definitely shorten your daily mileage. Take it easy! Be a turtle!!! Slow and steady get you to Katahdin!!!

One small but important thing that I noticed is that you are still using the original Sawyer water bags. They will fail on you. I recommend a 3 liter CNOC bag. 3 liters is enough to cook dinner then breakfast and still have a liter to carry in the morning.

Hi there! That knee pain will not last. Don't worry too much about it. Last year at the same location I thought my knees were done. I was using my trekking poles as crutches. I took a day off for rest and stretch, following a couple of short days of hiking and stretching. My knee pain pain was gone...be patient, you'll have to work through 100 other pains and challenges...mentally, emotionally, physically and spirituality. You can do this!!!

You have the luxury of time, so definitely cut your pace in half and your knee will rebound in time.

You aren't the first hiker to hit Neels Gap with a sore knee...that downhill "walk" from Blood Mountain is mighty tough. You were smart to take a day to let the knee rest up and to start exercising the quads. Knee health is all about having the correct muscle strength around the joint. You're using your head, and have a great attitude...and that knee pain will be long forgotten as you stand on top of Katadin on healthy strong legs !!!

I've been following your posts for over a month and didn't realize that I met you at Gooch Gap! I wish I would have known it was you. Where you are at in the hostel is only about 3 miles from Gooch Gap down the road from the farm house. I wish I would have known you were there. I would have picked up your whole group for the St. Patrick's Day Party at Gooch. We had 12 pizza's, beer, soft drinks, snacks and a cake for the hikers and we had about 7-8 Alumni at the party. It's great having a Tramily and the friendship is invaluable BUT, the Tramily isn't as important as your health. LISTEN to your body! It is truly the only way to get to Katahdin. You two are hiking strong and have a great attitude. Keep it up, you are going to have a blast this summer. Good luck, Hike Safe, Hike Strong. geek

Good luck and safe travels on your journey of a lifetime! Awesome that you picked up other people's trash! I do that too on section hikes. Watch your early miles until your body adjusts. The adage is less than 10 miles per day for the first 200 miles unless you did a lot of training. Tramilys come and go. Hike your own hike.

Hey Aly, it is very impressive the way you have started off. Like a seasoned thru hiker. You really seem to have this as under control as is possible on any major thru hike. I remember meeting you and your obnoxious tramily, lol. Youre much nicer in your videos.

Hi! Which day on the calendar was the day you started? Would you adjust that at all if you were to do it again? Thanks.

I started on March 13, and I think it was perfect. I enjoyed being on the front end of the ‘bubble’ for sanitation and lodging sake. I hardly had to worry about booking hostels or finding space in shelters if I wanted.

Hi just wondering what did you use to charge your phone? Did you like it or would you choose something else?

I used an Inui 20,000mHa charging block which worked wonderfully! It’s a little banged up now, but I still use it regularly.

Kuddos on doing trail maintenance 🗑 Do you stretch and / or do yoga on trail at all?

I have stretched nearly every day. Somehow it never seems to be enough, but I’m doing my best to support my body. 😅
