I would love to be rudely questioned about my knowledge in this way. This is called the socratic method of teaching.Extreme though it may be, this is one of the most powerful technique in pedagogy. In fact betwen me and myself this is how I teach myself , ask questions, if you can answer , move forwrad, if not move backward and eliminate your weakness then press forward.

In iits each subject has an outline - but actual syllabus depends on teachers experience - there will be a few books recommended but better take notes - may be one can record the lecture on mobile phones or screen shots.

the initial 10mins interaction with the class sets the tone for the entire semester We had profs who would straight up showcase that they were not interested in the class, and we would not be able to engage him/her throughout the sem Some were super engaging, and this was visible through the first 10mins of the semester itself I loved these type of classes, wherein the prof was more excited to show undergrads on how this teeny tiny subject has had multiple breakthroughs

Contributions of such kind -- Unix or C like language -- are very rare. There is nothing great about the label (such as professor or student at an IIT) but the work or effort, which made a teacher, a researcher, or a student awesome, is great. There are mediocre (ruled by inertia) and awesome people (smart and hard working) everywhere, independent of the institutes. It is just that the good places attract smart and hard working people. And yes most people are bookish, there is nothing wrong with being bookish as long as you are continuously making efforts to apply your bookish knowledge in real life. Books didn't come out of nowhere at least in technical fields, books in technology contain practical knowledge which originated from practical problems.

But if the quality of labour is such that they think that winning noble prize by undergraduate training institute will solve their job problem, then that labour is stupid and low quality. Basically this kind of low intelligence labour does not want "job" , but a constant source of income to satisfy base tastes in food drinks and cheap entertainment. As far as contribution of ZERO is concerned, dumb people wont understand its importance in the larger frame work of things, being a denoter of least magnitude was the least important property of ZERO.
