r=ax can't be true as that would mean r/x is a constant, which is not possible untill unless we are talking about a cone. So, the real equation should be r=ax+r1 where r1 is the radius at x1.

To find the variation of Temperature w.r.t. position variable x, the method is like that he did. Integrating from T1 to T2 will get directly the total value of heat transfer as both T1 & T2 are known, but how they are varying is represented by some curve. So its expression should be known. At each point in this expression, there is continuity of temperature distribution & hence, the heat flux.
