9:41 Those types of books are not really considered fanfiction, as they are officially licensed novels. Publically available fanfiction (in order to not break the law) is free, not sanctioned by the license holder, and thus cannot be mass published for profit. Those types of books (printed with the official logos and copyrights and everything) are considered to be "tie-in novels" 😊 I've read a ton of tie in novels for movie and video game franchises and they can be a lot of fun depending on the writer and how much direction they had while writing it.

I apologize in advance for the long comment, but I just wanted to say something. Like yourself, I was never a reader in life. I am 32 and just started my reading journey back in April. When I got into reading, your channel is something I found rather quickly and I have enjoyed watching your videos greatly and enjoyed the book recommendations even more! Something that I wanted to thank you for was a book that you mentioned solely because it sounded interesting to you, but it was book you hadn't read nor knew much about. The Book Thief. I have only read 7 books since April. I am reading 1 book at a time. I haven't worked up to the skill of reading multiple books at once. But this book is so incredible! After about 30 pages, I told my wife that this has the potential to be my favorite book, and I think it's lived up to that. I have been absolutely glued to every single word and page and I'm only 289 pages in this book of 552 pages. It's So Good! The concept of reading a book under that narrative of Death has been wildly intriguing and it's a concept that fascinates me tremendously. I just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to what quite possibly, and more than likely, be my favorite book ever. I truly enjoy watching your videos. I love your humor, and you are incredibly interesting to watch. I look forward to all of the great recommendations in the future!

High fidelity is one of my favorite books of all time. I was a really reluctant reader with learning disabilities and dyslexia. My 8th grade English teacher tapped into my special interest of music when she shared this book with me outside of classroom reading. It made me a reader, made me aware that there are books that I can love. I’ve revisited it many times over the last two decades.

Does anyone have recommendations for other channels like this one? I don’t really enjoy the ones that are like “I read all of blah-blah-blah so you don’t have to” or ones that focus on just a single review at a time. I like the way Nick just chats about what he’s into and what’s coming up.

The NY Review of Books imprint is excellent. They also have subscriptions available. A really good NY Review book that I HIGHLY recommend is In A Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes. It takes place in the 40’s LA and is from the perspective of a serial killer. It’s also a great movie with Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame, but it’s slightly different- still an awesome book and film.

I recommend “Juliet, Naked”, the book. It is about music, about change, about aging. And the humos is very similar to high fidelity. I don’t know why the movie has a more depressing tone, but also good.

1. When you said "I'm 36 years old *unbelieving stare*" as a 35 year old, I felt that! 2. Emma Skies on tiktok just did a pretty good video about fanfiction (like ethics of binding/selling fanfic, what is actually considered fanfic, etc.). 3. Ther was a girl on tiktok back in 2020 whi was reading Stephen King in order because apparently there are small connections throughout a bunch of his books. She said it was more obvious when reading in pub. order and really enjoyed reading his work that way.

"Snuff" was wild though, finished that one in a day. His stuff is wild. Not all great, but always interesting.

I forgot to recommend to you The Shards by Brett Easton Ellis. When I was reading my way through Cormac McCarthy, I needed a break and thought, The Shards would be easy-breezy reading. But oh boy was I wrong! Its difficult to describe, but Id say just go in blind, ease into the high school nostalgia, the undercurrents, the crime and the weird autofictional way we view our own past in. Try it! Really do!

Honestly I think Fight Club is one of Palahniuk's "worst" books. It's not bad at all, and the premise is great. I think others from him are stronger reads though. Choke is really good, probably his top form. And a lot of people sleep on Lullabye, but I really enjoyed that one. It's got elements of Fight Club in it as well.

Fanfic is very divisive. But more so the unauthorised internet stuff as it is usually written by amateurs with little to no proof reading/editing. Poorly written stories can still be great, though. If you can overlook the lack of ‘professionalism’ then just Google whatever fandom you might want to read along with fanfic and it’s possibly there, but be aware that there are a lot of ‘adult’ themes in internet fan fiction that you may not want to read. Traditionally published and blessed by the original creators is safer to avoid ‘adult situations’ that would never appear in the original material, and are written by established authors. I used to read the Buffy books and original Quantum Leap books back in their days. With them being authorised/sanctioned fanfics I enjoyed some and didn’t enjoy others like other non-fanfic books.
