The final Soviet assault on Berlin begins today. The Soviets have two million men supported by tens of thousands of guns, tanks, and aircraft. Opposite them stand millions of men and boys of the German Wehrmacht, Waffen SS, Volkssturm, and Hitler Youth. The forces of Nazism are weakened and disorganised but determined to fight on as long as possible.

My great-grandfather was a lieutenant-colonel in the Red Army. He fought from the first day of the war to the last and brought a bunch of (most likely stolen) things back from Germany. Most of his family died in the Holocaust, but his wife and children were lucky enough to flee in time. My grandmother was born in 1949. We don't know when he found out about his family's deaths. Maybe when the drive to Berlin began, he still had no idea. Or maybe he knew and was eager for revenge. Who knows. His name was David Meerovich Khoder; he was born in a shtetl and died a retired officer.

Zhukov's attack on the Seelow Heights was more akin to a WWI battle, with a massive artillery barrage that eclipsed all others in that war, followed by a massed infantry assault. The fact that it failed, and resulted in calling forward the tanks early, speaks to how badly things had gone, and how much worse they could've been had the Germans no lost so many units in Prussia. What's amusing is that at this moment, three different armies were racing for Berlin. Two Soviet and one American (although as said in the first part of the episode, the Americans were called off). You know, there's probably a timeline where the US airborne troops get to do their paradrop on Berlin and link up with the Soviets for another incredible Battle of the Nations style finale to the war. It's a shame we didn't get to see that.
@MrNicoJac
@MrNicoJac 5 ай бұрын
No, it's not a shame. With the fog of war, it's basically _guaranteed_ that there would've been some Blue-on-Red shooting. And that would have played _right into_ Stalin's suspicions of a German-USA alliance against the Soviets. WW2 could've easier turned into an immediate WW3....
@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623
@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623 5 ай бұрын
Probably for the better. Those airborne troops would have suffered massive casualties. Or as a Dutch advisor attached to the 82nd Airborne described it, the Germans would have fought them tooth and nail, and when they were defeated thank them for sparing them the fate of having to surrender to the Soviets.

The Soviets thought well of FDR because he opposed Winston Churchill's plan to land the Allied Armies in the The Balkans (Greece and Yugoslavia) and cut off the Soviets before they got to Germany. The Soviets' affection for FDR is shown in their LIBERATION series of movies made in the late 60s and early 70s (free on KZbin) that starts at Kursk and finishes In Berlin. Although relations with the USA were tense then, the Soviets portrayed FDR as trustworthy in WWII. The series is well-done and historically accurate, which not many Soviet-made movies are.

After watching this series for years (and it's been awesome throughout), it feels like we're at the end of a marathon. I'm quick to remind myself, however, that nothing compares to the years of suffering and brutality that so many victims of fascism went through in this years, and how impossible it is for me to imagine what that was like. When WWI came to an end, it ended with a dramatic suddenness; as this series moves to its end, the conclusion of WWII still feels, sadly, with so much death still to come, very far away even though I know it's not.

SPOILER On V-E Day, some of the more eager troops hoped to be sent to fight the Japanese, though others feared they would be sent there. The British put together a bomber force, called "Tiger Force", that would take part in bombing Japan, but in the end it was not needed. The previous year an RAF Bomber Command bomb aimer, Campbell Muirhead, recorded in his diary that when his crew successfully completed a tour, their commander asked if they wanted to join Tiger Force as a crew. He was not offended by their one-word rude reply, as they put "sir" on the end. His only comment was "the Japs cut those off, anyway."

The experience has a profound effect on John as he prepares to move up to the German city of Hamburg. Sergeant Artyom Ivanov of the 13th Guards Rifle Division begins the task today for which he has waited so long. The final drive into the beating heart of the Greater German Reich. The chickens have come home to roost, eh? "OH, HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED!" Eh? Hahaha. I've been watching since 6 months into WW1. Every week, for a decade now. Crazy. It is truly the greatest military documentary ever put to screen. And it's staggering hoe LITTLE it actually covers in the grand scheme of things. You could make a collection of videos this long, just on one battle like Tik's Stalingrad series. Human history is vast

You probably get quite a few messages like this, but here goes anyway. About 20 years ago, a WW2 vet told me an amazing story. I've often wondered if it is known by any historians, assuming it's true. He told me he was an NCO in a combat engineering unit of the U.S. 9th Infantry Division. I confirmed that he did serve in the 9th. When the Allies captured Cherbourg in the summer of 1944, the port facilities urgently needed to be made operable, because the Germans had done damage and placed booby-traps. This veteran and his squad or platoon were ordered to do some of the work. He told me they removed some demolition charges and put them in their extra truck. They then found a warehouse containing very large quantities of Cognac, Champagne, and possibly more, all marked "for the Wehrmacht." He said they emptied the truck of explosives, put up a warning sign, refilled the truck with booze, and returned to base. He told me that generals from all over the ETO called in favors to try to get some. Have you ever heard this story?

Doesn't sound out of the realm of possibility. Plus, with all the trucks the Allied armies had, they could have just asked for another bus to take away the explosives

According to Russian General Popel (commissioner of the 1st Guards Tank Army) After the Germans stopped the Russian infantry on the Zelov hills And after another day where Zhukov failed to break through the line, Stalin gave Konev a free hand According to General Popelj, this infuriated Zhukov so much that he literally threatened to shoot the generals It reached such proportions that the commanders literally fled to the front lines "to push" the attack and hide from the angry marshal. In the end, the front commissar had to keep the marshal "on a chain" so that he wouldn't do any actual shooting *** The Germans literally threw all their defenses against Zhukov, it was learned from the prisoners that: the SS were asked to hold out for 48 hours and that "the war would be won" (because friend of the Russians, Roosevelt had died) and that their alliance would fall apart and the Americans would come to help the Germans, they just had to "hold out for another 2-3 days" *** when Konjev finally broke through the line and rushed towards Berlin, they did not encounter any resistance until the city itself, the Germans had literally nothing, only in the city did they encounter the police who "slowed down" Konjev
