Madonna set the 80's on fire with her unique and provocative way of dressing. Every girl(and boy😂) wanted to look like her and it freaked parents and the moral majority out big time. All the crucifixes, rubber bangles, fingerless gloves, underwear as outer wear, ripped clothes, leggings, exposed midriff etc was the way Madonna always dressed even before she was famous. After she became a household name her style, fashion sense and fuck you attitude spread like wildfire and every girl in the world dressed like her. Major retail stores had their own "Madonna section" where you could copy her look exactly. She was always ahead of her time and she is a very smart woman. You couldn't fuck with her if you tried. As a long-time Madonna fan since 1982, I'm so glad the new generation is discovering her, you're in for a treat. This song is the title track and first single of her second album "Like a virgin" 1984, was the year. Although she does write and co-write, this song was written by Kelly and Steinberg, 2 straight guys, as a ballad. The song has been floating around and nobody would touch that song because of the word "virgin", that's how conservative people back in 1984 is. Madonna saw potential in this song. And as a marketing and style genius, with her stage and real name Madonna, a play on Madonna/whore, she employed producer Nile Rogers from Chic to turn this ballad to its current form. Add to the brilliance of the music video, simple enough concept, she hopped on a ferry in NYC and got off at Venice. With beautiful imagery of dancing in gondola and wearing white for the lion turned lion groom. It's all brilliant music, production, and visual. This has since became one of Madonna's signature hit.

Madonna was the 80s. (and Michael Jackson) Her influence is seen today. Lady Gaga, Pink, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, etc. Overt sexually, the dancers, the grand shows, the fashion, and the singing style.

One thing you should know about any Madonna song/video, never take anything at face value ( I.e. the lion’s tongue) everything Madonna produces is done with humor, irony, or a deeper metaphor.

The lyrics of Like a virgin can be interpreted in different ways depending on the tone and context of performance, Madonna herself never sing it the same way in her tours. It can be hella sexual, uplifting or even sad. And the lion sticking out his tongue seems to me as a reference to cunnilingus, you know lol

You should check out the live version of this song she did at the MTV VMA's around '84 or '85. It was pretty shocking for the time. I was 14 or 15 and glued to the tv. Lol Madonna was everything to some of us teen girls back then. We all wanted to be her.

Madonna pretty much invented this look, or at least popularized it herself! It was "scene" and it was "street" and then thanks to Madonna it became "pop." Teenage girls around the country started copying Madonna's look and because of that the word "wannabe" was invented!

They tried to prevent her from landing and recording this video clip.. She used to wear many Christian crosses as jewelry ...and told everybody she would be a good catholic girl , buttttttttttttt like a prayer was to much from the pope .....after she danced , kissed a saint ...Like a prayer is full of symbolism .
