There’s so much symbolism in this video. The saint and the falsely accused man are the same person. The church and the jail are the same sets. The burning crosses that represent intimidation. A woman witnesses evil and seeks sanctuary in a church. She falls asleep on a pew and dreams of the saint coming to life and her realization (though stigmata) that she must become the savior to the falsely accused man. Her dancing in front of the burning crosses represents overcoming fear and intimidation. This video, and the whole story of how its controversy was epic in so many ways. This was Madonna taking over artistic control of her career. Prince did not write the song but he played that guitar rift that opens the song…when you first see her running and falling.

The fact that your youth group leaders were warning everyone not to watch it kind of reflects the broader societal tensions at the time-pop culture pushing boundaries and traditional institutions resisting it. But you’re right; for many young people, telling them not to watch something only made it more irresistible. Sneaking in listens on Walkmans or catching the video at night probably made it all the more thrilling!

This song was so controversial at the time- society was not ready for this. The Catholic Church and society, had an issue with her dressed scantily in church kissing a Black Jesus, and the burning crosses. Just the idea of portraying a black Jesus- blew people’s minds! She lost a multi- million dollar Pepsi deal,because of this video. If you have not already noticed, Madonna is known for pushing boundaries and not giving a crap. She paved the way! Iconic! “Justify my love”will shock you.

A lot of people thought so, but it wasn't a "Black Jesus". It was a catholic saint by the name of ST. MARTIN OF PORRES from Peru. Madonna herself explained this, and the actor playing the role of the black saint, explained it as well during an interview, that you can still find on KZbin.

Seeing your love for this song is great. Being older than you guys I can remember being at my aunt's house as a ten year old, waiting by the TV with the VCR at ready. And when this Pepsi commercial came on the entire world STOPPED. Nobody talked. Nobody even knew what we were watching but we knew it was incredible. The mass hysteria after it was insane. The church called it blasphemy, Pepsi never played the commercial again. It was one of those moments in history that was nothing short of iconic. Nobody does it like this anymore. Also, this remains my favorite song of hers despite me loving quite a huge selection of her catalog. Genius all around.

It’s wild how certain moments in pop culture like LAP (I’m guessing you mean "Like a Prayer" by Madonna) stirred such massive reactions back in the day! That video was a real cultural shockwave when it dropped in 1989. With the imagery of burning crosses, religious symbolism, and Madonna's provocative persona, it was no surprise that religious groups, especially the Catholic Church, were outraged. Pepsi even canceled their sponsorship deal with her because of the backlash. MTV pushing the video to late-night slots shows how sensitive the issue was, even though it became iconic.

My mum went to see Madonna in the early 90s because she loved her and she said getting there was so scary because hundreds or thousands were outside with banners, signs screaming throwing things saying they were going to hell, how Madonna was a wh*re and worse she went on to say it was one of the best concerts she’s ever been to! Madonna literally changed the world and music many times and was hated at the times that she did it, literally suffered so she could open the door for other artists to express themselves, however they wanted or needed

"Like a prayer" the lead single and title track from the album of the same name. "Like a prayer" album is often considered by critic as the perfect pop album. Madonna dug deep and did a 180 on this project: she got personal, it's an album about family and faith, it's also her divorce album with Sean Penn. Co-written with Patrick Leonard, and the music video directed by Mary Lambert, it's consistently on best video lists. The video started with Madonna, running away from something, fell just outside of a church, went in for a refuge, fell asleep, and had a dream where one of the saints (not Jesus), became flesh, and inspired her to tell how to proceed with her conundrum. When she woke with a choir singing and resolved to clear the name of a black person accused of a murder he didn't commit. A mini story that is still sadly relevant in the US. Madonna is a natural brunette. This is one-too-few of her many videos that she does not have blonde hair (two other videos are "Who's that Girl" from 1988 and she has chestnut brown hair and "Frozen" from 1998 where she has longer black hair).

Actually ...MTV banned this video....becoz they think it was too much for them......eventually the video becomes one of the ICONIC VIDEOS OF ALL TIME IN THE POP HISTORY...no one can repeat that of what she did in music HISTORY....she may not be the great vocalist...but what she contributed in the music industry made her an ICON...!!!

Actually, the LIKE A PRAYER video was never banned. You must be thinking about the PEPSI commercial Madonna did to launch her new album. That commercial aired prior to the release of the official video. Then when the Like A Prayer video premiered, it caused such a controversy among religious groups, that PEPSI decided to pulled the commercial. However, MTV continue playing the video.

It has long been alleged that it is Prince playing the guitar sample at the beginning of the video, but it didn’t appear on the album. This was frighteningly polarising in 1989. Religious groups went crazy which pushed the Vatican at the time to condemn it as it contained burning of the cross and the depiction of a black Jesus. This music video was so very controversial when it came out. The word controversy gets thrown out nowadays. But this music video was legit controversial. This music video had to have an advisory in the intro. Some stations and tv networks bannned the song due to 1) buring crosses 2) black Jesus 3) making out with a black man and kissing his feet (although they didn't say it but it was definitely one of the reasons). She was very hated at this time

I think one of the earlier comments on this thread is unfair in accusing you of not realising the significance of the impact this video had on society in 1989, because you weren't around then. It is obvious that you have real joy in the song, and remember it from childhood, and it is after all one of those few songs from this era which completely transcends the time it was released. Even its sound is not pinnable down to the late 80s; it's a true accomplishment. It is hard, however, to express the impact that this video had at the time when big artists like Madonna sort of released videos to the entire nation (and the world) as premieres on TV. The depiction of a black saint or black Jesus figure, the correlation of that figure with a falsely accused, innocent black man who is helping a female victim of assault and who then gets framed for the crime, the fact that Madonna kisses this person in the video, the burning crosses... it was all just so unacceptable and shocking to so many people in America (and in the Vatican). She lost her Pepsi endorsement deal as a sole result of this video. But she also earned the respect of people in the future, if you see what I mean. The way that this is so ahead of its time is still unbelievable to me. I was 12 when it came out and I remember not understanding what was supposed to be wrong with it! I get it now. The music videos of Michael Jackson, Madonna's peer at this time, are rightly praised for being ahead of its time in terms of technical process and the sheer extraordinariness of his performance, but this video, is ahead of its time in its entire concept. Unlike MJ, she has never got enough credit for it. She has never got enough credit for anything. We are so lucky that she is still around and creating music. Your videos this week have been lots of fun.
