So I just searched it up and there have been 28 eurovision songs that have made it to the Billboard Hot 100 but only 12 of them were the originial songs. The other 16 have been other artists that covered, alot of them being non-english songs that someone covered in english. The most recent one was Armenia's song in 2022 "Snap" which originally became a viral tik-tok hit.

You're right about Eurovision being one of the first shows seen on television - the newly formed EBU (European broadcasting union) needed something to broadcast on their TV/radio network Eurovision, they wanted to make use of the new television format. However, it took quite a while before it actually became a show pleasing to the eye and not just the ear.

About the history of why eurovision started: From what I understood the vision for eurovision was to unite a war torn europe after world war 1 and 2. To have a collective music festival to gather around. But then also of course for the purpose of entertainment!

I think that's part of the romantic view about it, but I'd say that they've nailed it with their guess because the TV program itself was also conceived as a way to test and promote live, international TV broadcasts through the recently created Eurovision network.

As I remember it the reason for why americans know this song is because Frank Sinatra did a cover of it, and it became a massive hit. Leading to the original song also being more widely known.

From 1956 to 1998 all the songs were accompanied by a live orchestra. From 1999 and onwards the orchestra was dropped, so the entries could use recorded backing track during their performances

All vocals in Eurovision are live and have no autotune, all instruments are prerecorded (at least in the modern competition).

The Eurovision song contest was created by the Swiss to unify Europe after WWII, to promote the EBU (European Broadcasting Union whose HQ are in Geneva, Switzerland) across the continent and its members and to be able to use the new ressources TV could offer. «Eurovision» has also been a word to describe the broadcasting mode: when it's broadcasted in «Eurovision», it means the programme is broadcasted in many countries in Europe - usually live and therefore, at the same time. The first even to be broadcasted on «eurovision» mode was the Coronation of Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953 live on public TVs in the UK, France, Belgium, West Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. In French, it has become a synonym of the ESC: «on regarde l'Eurovision» (we're watching ESC). But it's also said/written sometimes an event will be broadcasted «en eurovision» (in eurovision), i.e. being watchable on public TVs across Europe.

Hmm, without really looking it up I know that the winning song Arcade from 2019 (the Netherlands) got big on tiktok during the pandemic and got on the hot 100 some years later (and I'll also guess that the winning band 2021 Måneskin has charted on there, but not sure if it was with their winning song or some other song later).

This in it's original version as here at the Eurovision was released in the USA in 1958 and was 5 weeks at number one for the singer, it was recorded in English by many singers after it's success one being Dean Martin but Dean's English version not as successful but Dean seems to be the one more famous for it. In the UK the Italian version made number 10 and there were several versions in English by different singers iin the chart at the same time. It was the Italian version though that was the world wide hit

In an effort to cut down production costs, Israel decided against having a live orchestra when they hosted in 1999, and there hasn’t been a live orchestra since!

Germany mainly, although quite a few countries didn`t require the Orchestra, so it was dropped to save money. Now we just have nothing live apart from the main vocals. So glorified karokee, what a backwards step.
