I watched his show on Thursday nights when I was a teen. I'm an avid Elvis fan. But that didn't start for me until I had a dozen or so Dean LPs. You can tell the influence that Dean had on the singing voice of Elvis --especially in the 1950s doing ballads. I've read bios by two of his children. Pretty good stuff. Dean was the man that held the Rat Pack together --not Frank. I never cared much for Frank's voice. I like perhaps a dozen of his songs. But Dean?! Hundreds. He was as gifted in comedy as he was in singing. Jerry even admitted that Dean was funnier than him. To my knowledge Frank didn't record any song with some Italian in it. Dean was a first generation American. He didn't speak and English until first grade. Kids would make fun of his English troubles.

Dean Martin is always on the record player when it’s Italian night in the kitchen. A little red wine, a little Deano, some pasta and all is right with the world in those moments.
For female Friday you might check out a female crooner and actress Eartha Kitt - in the 40's 50's and 60's. Check out her song Love For Sale. She has an amazing story as well Her career began in 1942 and appeared in the 1945 original Broadway theatre production of the musical Carib Song. In the early 1950s, she had six US Top 30 entries, including "Uska Dara" and "I Want to Be Evil". Her other recordings include the UK Top 10 song "Under the Bridges of Paris" (1954), "Just an Old Fashioned Girl" (1956) and "Where Is My Man" (1983). Orson Welles once called her the "most exciting woman in the world".[2] She starred as Catwoman in the third and final season of the television series Batman in 1967.
Dean is my favorite of the rat pack. His voice was so good. Some other good Deano songs you guys should do are "Return To Me", "Little Ole Wine Drinker Me", "Send Me The Pillow You Dream On", "Glory Of Love", and "King Of The Road". There are plenty more of course, but his versions of these suggestions are really good. Also check out his duet with Nancy Sinatra called "Things". You guys need to give a listen to another crooner I don't think you've ever done is Al Martino. "I Love You Because", "Painted Tainted Rose", and "Look Around (You'll Find Me There)"
My favorite too! I love “Ain’t it a kick in the head”. Listen to it sometime if you haven’t already.

I checked it out online and Modugno's version is better than Martin's! Must be because it's sung completely in Italian by a native. Lovely!
@keithwarrington2430 Жыл бұрын
How it didn't win is a mystery to me, The song was the first by Mudugno to win the San Remo Music festival before being entered into the Eurovision. He won th San Remo three times. In my opinion Dino spoils the song by starting with the chorus rather than the first verse which ends on a suspended 7th or similar chord , meaning everything leads up the the crescendo of one of popular music's greatest sing-along choruses no matter what language you speak.. Martin ( who's singing I love as a rule ) puts this in as a bridge almost halfway through the song but the natural progression is lost compared to the original. So Many songs and films have been ruined on the grounds that American audiences wouldn't go for three verses in italian or french or the hero being English or Mexican etc. why do American media producers have such a low opinion of their citizens' cultural capacity?

One of Deans best songs! It is Italian. "Nel blu, dipinto di blu" means "In the blue, painted blue." Here's a short snippet so you can understand what its about. Flying, oh, oh! Singing, oh, oh, oh, oh! In the blue painted blue. Happy to be up there. And I flew, I flew happily to the heights of the sun. As the world slowly disappeared out there, A soft music was playing just for me. And I was flying, was flying happily higher than the sun and still higher, While the world slowly, slowly was disappearing far away down there, a sweet music was playing just for me. I think, that dream does not come back ever again. I painted my face and hands blue. Then suddenly I was being kidnapped by the wind. And I began to fly in the endless sky. Tony Bennett has to be ranked right up there with Sinatra and Martin. Great Italian crooners. I was also lucky enough to see Sinatra live. I’ve never seen anyone else with such stage presence and command of an audience.

I’m a huge Frank Sinatra fan, too. Through Frank I listened to Dean Martin and Perry Comp. I started listening to Frank in the early 80s when he released “New York, NewYork.” I never saw either Frank or Dean in concert. However, I was lucky to see Perry Como in concert. And yes, he was also dressed to the nines.

Dean is so good. He's a legend during the crooner era. Song suggestion: Al Martino--Spanish Eyes (1967). He's another crooner to check out.
Love him! I never heard this entire song before. When I was a child, I loved Dean Martin because my grandfather loved him and also looked like him a bit. Really dark hair, dark skin, and dark eyes and he got so tan in the summer. But I had a bit of a crush on Dean Martin when I was about 10. I am sure someone else will mention this, but he was from Italy. Beautiful Italian in that song. I speak Spanish and could grasp some of the words but many are not similar.

My great uncle grew up with Dean in Steubenville, so I've always appreciated him. I remember his network TV show; lots of fun.

The language is absolutely Italian. Dean is Italian and has been known to speak it and sing it. My mom used to love this song because my grandfather used to sing it around the house when she was a baby/child. 🙂 When my brother and I were born, she sang it to us and told us about our grandfather, and on occasion, she'd play the record. My grandmother would do the same at her house and talk about my grandfather, and how much he would have spoiled us like he did with his own children. 🙂♥️

One of my all time favorites. You can just picture his smile as he sings. Always sounds like he's enjoying himself. Check out "SWAY"
My mother would often talk about seeing Dean Martin at the Chicago Theater LIVE in the late 40's. Of course she also saw Frank Sinatra there but Dean was always her favorite.

For a few years I had to drive down to Tampa, from Orlando, and pick up my grandmother to bring her from my aunt's to my mom's place. One time I brought my Dean Martin greatest hits CD for the drive. After 3 Dean songs in a row she asked, "What station is this" and when I told her it was a Dean Martin CD she couldn't believe I would buy that. I laughed and told her he was an all-time favorite! Who doesn't love Dean?

I LOVE to listen to Dean Martin songs when I cook Italian food, this being among my favorites. It makes the sauce (chef's kiss) turn out perfecto. Thank you for such a fun and upbeat reaction.

I’m a New Yorker and all of my grandparents and aunts and uncles and great aunts and great uncles are from Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, etc. Unfortunately, they have all passed on, but I used to always love listening to their stories about when they would go see people like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin live at the famous theaters throughout New York City. When I listen to them sing it makes me feel a connection to that bygone era

Dino Paul Crocetti aka Dean Martin born 1917 in Steubenville, Ohio. The King of Cool. Not only a great singer but a damn good actor and comedian too. There is another crooner that a lot of people have never heard of because he didn't have tons of hits. His name is Frank Ifield (pronounced eyefield) and his best known song is "I Remember You". Give him a listen, he has an amazing voice.

After an amazing career in nightclubs and the Los Vegas stage, Starting in 1965, Dean Martin was the host of the hit television variety program The Dean Martin Show, which centered on Martin's singing and comedic talents and was characterized by his relaxed, easy-going demeanor. From 1974 to 1984, he was roastmaster on the popular Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, which drew celebrities, comedians and politicians. Throughout his career, Martin performed in concert stages, nightclubs, audio recordings and appeared in 85 film and television productions.

I love how you appreciate this music. And I especially love how you are sharing it with your kids which will help to keep it alive years from now. Giving your children the gift of wonderful music is so important. I did not realize until much later the gift my parents, especially my Mom, gave me growing up in a house filled with music. From the old AM stations that played music like this, Sinatra, etc. to my mom's records of musicals, Mitch Miller, classical. I remember Vaughn Monroe and Dance Ballerina Dance because it likely spurned me to ballet lessons and love of that. That's a super oldie. Your children are very fortunate to have such great parents.
