Boil up is NOT Maori food, kai Moana, Ae, but not this Pakeha invention we call boil up. NZ didn't have potato, it was bought by the English and adopted by Maori as it yielded more then the Kumara and grew in cooler climates very well. Also the English bought with them every mammal that is in NZ except the indigenous bats. So with almost every ingredient in this video being from a Pakeha origin how Maori is it?
@clownedya1903 жыл бұрын
@@A_Talented_Maori I don't know where your from, but we had taewa (māori potatoe) long before the British colonisation attempts, in Tūwharetoa anyway. Eventually when they did turn up with pork, pumpkin and potatoes, we adapted and used that. But a form of boil up has been around long before then. It was a perfect way to cook food in the winter.
@A_Talented_Maori3 жыл бұрын
@@clownedya190 So what pots did they use to boil their food? Cos all the pots pre-pakeha were made of different types of woods. I agree we had a few root veges, just not the usual ones you find in todays boil ups. And as for mammal, there were only two, and they were both bats.

recipe, saute onions carrots and celery add chicken or beef stock to the pot sliced onions garlic etc then your meat, add greens when meat almost done doughboys to when ready eat with good boiled potatoes and cooked kumara. Boys don't leave the kumara in the water take them out to cool down they taste better cold or warm. Don't forget to season your boil up with some salt. Guys this way is the greatest way to cook boil up cooked like this for years on the powerboard still follow this way very tasty lots of flavour smells great.

I need to ask you this,,, Do YOU WASH the MEAT before you Cook it ? ,,,, because even though you got the meat at the Super Market you need to WASH it with some Fresh Lime? Lemon or Salt can work too. Always remember that, It cuts the bacteria from the handling of all those who came in Contact with the meat at the Packaging Plant or Processing Plant. I do like the boil up. We in the Caribbean do the same thing.Now I do it in Canada too. cheers !

how long does it take to make a boil up
@KiwiBushcraftAndSurvival7 жыл бұрын
2 and a 1/2 hrs to cook pork, to ensure it is safe to eat and an extra 1/2 hour to cook the greens and vegetables you add in - so 3 hrs all up. When cooking any other type of meat it only takes 1 hr to cook the meat and an extra 1/2 hour to cook the greens and vegetables you add in - so 1 and a 1/2 hrs all up. Hope this helps.
@kiarakingi21457 жыл бұрын
oh kay cool how long does it's last
@KiwiBushcraftAndSurvival7 жыл бұрын
It can last for 2 - 3 days out on the stove during winter, and about 1 day during summer. If you are having cabbage as your green in the boil up, then it is a good idea to add a knob of butter for taste and it also helps the boil up to keep better. Its best to put the food in the refrigerator after you have eaten your first meal. That way it will keep nice and fresh for each meal. Just re-heat on the stove or in the microwave oven.

@KiwiBushcraftAndSurvival6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ireenija, I have seen it being sold at the Otara flee market in South Auckland many years ago. But they were advertising it as Puwha (Puha). Other than that I don't see it being sold anywhere, and the only other way is to collect it yourself. And if you are unsure, get someone that knows what it looks like, to take you out and show you to be safe.

Bro whats poroporo?
@KiwiBushcraftAndSurvival3 жыл бұрын
Poroporo is name of different several different plants, because the plants are in the same family and look very similar. But if you search: Raupeti in google, this is the plant you want. Raupeti has the common name of Black Nighshade, the scientific name is (Solanum nigrum). This family of plants have some poisonous parts, it is advised that you either study these plants in detail first or get someone to show you them first before gathering and eating them. Again the plant I am cooking here is called Raupeti, Black Nighshade, Solanum nigrum. I call it Poroporo because this is how I learnt its name. But the better name to use I believe is Raupeti. This will help prevent confusion. I hope this helps. Oh you will also find it normally on disturbed ground, like where people have dug up the ground months earlier, like when the dig up areas before putting up new houses. They also like shaded areas and prefer growing amongst long grass.

Hi sorry to hear you over cooked it. If you check it every 30 minutes or so, just to make sure you have enough water in the pot. This will ensure you don't run out of water and burn it. You can't really over cook it (as such) as long as you have water covering the food in the pot at all times.
