I know I'm doing a good job as a new teacher, but it's hard to fully accept that with everything else going on.

I just started subbing after being in kindergarten for most of my observation hours. I’m not sure what grade you teach but I get it! The older kids are so different than younger kids, it’s a struggle to keep them engaged and they love to push you. Keep going, as you get more comfortable with the challenges you’ll become a stronger teacher each day. It’s hard to be a student teacher, it feels like you have to earn their respect. You’re doing amazing though 😊

Many fourth graders have behavior challenges this year because they were in kindergarten when many schools shut down in 2020. These students had to participate with online learning in first grade, and so they did not have the opportunity to learn social behaviors. I am also teaching fourth grade, and when specific kids begin to blurt, and continue after being told to stop and change their behavior, then I give them a pad of paper. They will then be able to communicate by using a pencil for about 10 minutes. That helps with the blurting and unnecessary comments. When the students come back from recess or an outdoor activity, I set a timer for one minute. They are to be quiet when they sit down in their chairs. You might also want to have a list of activities that do not require talking or comments ( taking out a book, handing in work, forming a line) and praise the students who can do such tasks without disrupting the class. I have been teaching for 31 years, and remember to give yourself grace because it does take time to get used to the teaching profession. Hang in there and take care.

Teaching is tough, you have to be "on" all day. I am a 2nd career teacher, student taught in 3rd, got hired to teach 6th (at elementary) and after a couple years I moved to 4th. I love teaching 4th grade, but behaviors are getting worse every year. I have 27 students and no para help, some kids are draining. Some parents are draining, you have to learn how to turn it off (i still struggle with this 5 years in). You have to be assertive, but kind. As a district we have had 14 teachers quit mid year, which is crazy! Not sure if I will continue teaching for years and years... It is tougher each year.... I wish you well!

I think about teaching ALL THE TIME. The behaviors that we work with are so shocking. Keep pushing if you still have the passion for it. Best of luck with your journey!

i will start my clinical teaching soon but i'm very afraid especially because i feel like it's so new to me and i will have no idea of what i'm doing. i see so many teachers feeling overwhelmed and exhausted at the very start of their careers is very scary but understandable. seeing your videos is really helpful to take in what i should focus on! i hope you continue doing a great job and don't feel discouraged!!

Every new experience usually feels scary. You probably feel afraid because you care enough about what you're doing. It's okay to not know everything, but spend the time to learn along the way. You'll build more confidence in it as you keep practicing! Best of luck with your teaching journey ♥

Julie, Tip 1. *And this tip is also for your host teacher too.* I had to learn through play back when I was a young autistic school student growing up. In fact, it was hospital doctor recommended because if not that I would stop learning growing up. I hope that this helps you all out with the student who does not respond well to certain things in certain subjects. I was the same way. Tip 2. Christmas Energy !!! Students having to make those memories with their friends at school where they can see them (even in a more locked down environment) before they get 2 weeks or so off at home (yes more do whatever environment) but still being reduced to the little clique at home. Otherwise, 1. Again I will never understand why do colleges and universities stress so much on lesson planning and never behavior management strategy planning. 2. I said it once and I will say it again. Your Hair and Your Smile looks pretty. - Dwight

Thank you! It's a challenge for me to implement educational games all the time, but it's super helpful that other teachers share their ideas online. School breaks definitely add something in the air 😆

@@ms.trinh.teaches Julie, I'm not a teacher but I have exhibited going off task and talking out before when I was a young autistic school student. I'm just sharing my student experiences to try to hopefully help you out or to give you a little light the same way that you are sharing your teaching experiences that is in a way educating me into what is happening in our country's school systems and in effect helping me take in every day of my life . - Dwight

Hey girly! I don’t say this to discourage you, I say it to be honest. I had a stressful student teaching where I felt exhausted and burnt out. I thought things would be better when I got my own class and started teaching. Now, I’m in my second year and resigning at the end of this year. The burnout and exhaustion only got worse when I was on my own with no one to help me with behaviors. Just make sure that while you have all these awesome resources in college that you are making connections to work outside of teaching too. It’s really rough out here.

Hi! I hope your transition away from teaching is a smooth journey. I'm coming in knowing that I'll be overwhelmed, but making the choice to leave is only possible after I have my own classroom. I think the fear of not experiencing it for myself will haunt me more than the actual stress it gives. Thank you so much for your advice! I'll definitely keep my options open if that day comes.

@@ms.trinh.teaches I totally understand that, it is the exact same reason I have taught for the 2 years that I did. Best of luck, I hope it is a positive experience for you!

Thanks for sharing your Student Teacher video. I am very interested in the student teacher experience. How are the observations? What are your assignments like for your professors? I would like to know the details of your assignments? Thank you.

I attended WGU for my teaching credential, so my experience is going to differ from other programs. My observations were recorded, so there was less pressure of having someone come in and watch you. I'd still always have nerves about how students would behave during these lessons though. Assignments required a lot of writing, but the requirements were straight forward. The sample lesson plans helped a lot with knowing what should be considered to teach.
