I made this, turned out great! I added pea gravel on the top. But a vent hole was needed to allow for air to escape when it was filling.

This is a great project and one I was thinking of doing myself to water our garden. We have a sump pump that pumps water out into our yard and instead I could route it into the barrel. Another great addition would be to add a hose output at the bottom of the barrel and using the pressure from all of the water above it, the water should flow out with good pressure I would think. That way you could just hook up the hose to it instead of having to pump water into a bucket and carry it wherever.

This project really glosses over the "collector" part of this project. Getting water into those two small holes would be the tricky part. I'm sure he just used a garden hose off camera. This video is more about pumping the water than collecting it.

We have a giant ceramic pot that we used for something similar. It is important to realize however, that even though it's just rainwater, you should not directly drink the water that comes out of it. Who knows what birds have been doing in or around the area, not to mention what they can do on top of the barrel. We mainly use ours to water our garden, great project.

This way will in fact get you more water per rain (by a huge factor). Most that are hooked up to gutters also have overflow holes/valves built into them and are elevated off the ground so you can just attach a hose to the bottom of the container and the water will flow. A little more intensive to design/build but it will get the job done faster. you can find several vids on here for designs like that. cool stuff

Best way would be to cut a rectangle for the water intake, place the barrel under a rain gutter down spout and feed the down spout into the rectangle. Next rain storm, it'll fill up pretty fast. Could probably be used for drinking water if you used a proper filter over the water intake. Neat project.

I have something similar at home...but instead of using a Barrel, I used a large plastic garbage can (or drum). Also the pump idea is kinda nice since I use buckets to get the water out. Definetly gonna try this some time.

primer is a turpine or achcohal like substance. It's purpose is to clean the pipe of dirt and obstructions. The purple color is just a dye to show where you applied it. Hower.. I would suggest taking off the store stickers from your pipe before applying it. Cleaning the pipe allows the cement to make a better seal around the pipe

haha Kipkay I have that same exact staple gun. There is a hand water pump like this in a small town in central maine i lived in and its right on top of a well. the pump is on a wooden mount and the whole thing moves you pick it up and drop it down a few times to prime the pump. You could route your house gutters to this barrel collector. i would do this but I dont want to breed mosquitoes.

@MrSeanw84 You beat me to it but you'll need plumbers putty around the threads of the spigot (tap) this is GREY WATER and you can't drink it but you can water your lawn and plants w/ it if you add a bag of manure to the bottom when the water fills the barrel it will need to be stirred to properly mixed but your lawn and plants will LOVE it.

as PVC pipes are mainly used for water, it would be safe to assume that the materials used for glueing them together are safe. Not this does not mean crack open a can of PVC cement and go to town eating it, but it is safe.

@mfoulks625 I have one and we hooked the drain pipe on the roof to it so it gets full every time it rains. There is also a hole at the bottom of the barrel with a hose conected to it. This allows the water pressure to give a slow stream into the garden.

What happens in the winter time?? Do I have to pump all that water out so it doesn't freeze.. And if the water freeze will it warp the barrel causing to be off balance or cause little cracks so water will leak out?? Tornadoes or Hurricanes will cause a problem also. It is a great Idea and the Idea of just putting a faucet at the bottom and just elevating it higher surface, but you still have worry about Mother Nature..

i also did is by connecting the overflow pipe to overflow to another Barrel we had 3 giant Barrels filled up in 1 heavy thunder storm it was great kept almost 2 weeks of watering the garden almost everyday but we even had a hi flow water pump to help too better than this and more simple that having pvc pipes and drilling holes

I was noticing a lot of comments about people thinking it's unclean to drink out of a rain collector but you could just buy one of those water pureofier jugs and put the water in there and it would take out all the bad stuff.

I acually put goldfish in my barrels. they eat the bugs and since I don't drink the water I'm not concerned about whats in it even though when I"m hunting I drink water straight from the creeks. and if u keep an open top barrel in the shade it will inhibit algea growth.

in TX you would either need to treat the water or use a finer screen mesh (like window screen), otherwise it would be a breeding ground for mosquito and other creepy crawly things. nice warm stagnant water... mosquito heaven.

the size of the intake does not matter too much. The entire top of the barrel would catch the water and then just fall through the smaller wholes

HERES ANOTHER WAY: Get a Barrel and big tubes then connect the tubes to the rain gutters then to the Barrel then when it rains it will fill the Barrel up then just put a tap at the bottom of the Barrel then connect a water hose and you got free water planter

A *much* better use for a used wine or whiskey barrel would be to ferment beer. Rain-collection barrels should be plastic because (1) plastic is MUCH cheaper than a new or used oak barrel, and (2) plastic barrels will stay water-tight even if they go dry. Wooden barrels will separate at the staves if they get dry.

It all depends on where you life. Sure you live in the city and have water pipes to you. I own a cabin in the woods. I could spend a couple hundred thousand to have water piped to the cabin and then pay the wonderful price of $1 for 3000 gallons of water, or I could make something like this. Got to tell ya for the cabin this project is a LOT most cost effective.

I guess the bottom line is that it is a cool project to do, and if it helps you feel better because you are conserving some water, there is no harm in that. But to say you are going to save money isn't very accurate. Even if you built it for free, using a full barrel would save you about a cent or two. If pumping 50 gallons of water out by hand is worth a cent to you....go for it. If you are anticipating lowering your water bill, or saving any real money... this isn't the way to do that.

You would be better off getting a large galvanized metal water tank if you wanted it for drinking and your location would also be important eg; I live near a city and the fallout from the nearby steel mills makes the water we collect undrinkable but fine for watering plants Our relatives however live in the country and collect rainwater for drinking as there is no nearby industries to contaminate the water
