For the folks getting all caught up with the capital of Israel, yes it's Jerusalem, but Trump saying the US recognizes it as the capital of Israel is about recognizing it as the capital of Netanyahu's government (i.e. the Jewish government, NOT Palestinian/Muslim/Christian). Israel's claim over Jerusalem is not recognized by the international community; for those who don't know, Jerusalem is an important site for Judaism, Islam and Christianity. I should point out that the dispute is specifically for East Jerusalem, where essentially some of the holiest sites of those religions reside (Temple Mount, Western Wall, Al-Aqsa Mosque, Dome of the Rock and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre). Followers of these religions have fought for centuries for Jerusalem. To not aggravate and take sides, foreign embassies have located themselves in Tel Aviv. Please take time to do some research and be informed in world politics. Though it doesn't always affect us directly as federal or local politics, in some cases (like this one) it affects our country's position in the world arena. Oh and Wikipedia has great information on the Jerusalem conflict! Remember to donate if you use it! :)
