The word of the day is "ICEBERG." Although one of the main theme's of this entry was agribusiness, ICEBERG ain't "LETTUCE!" The common adage is that if you see an iceberg above the waterline, you're only actually getting a glimpse of ten percent of it. Ninety percent of anything lies below surface and hidden from view. That's pretty much true in life for everything. We only see a small portion to the totality of people and their lives. So... with tha,t our perceptions are skewed and we really don't know a whole lot about anyone or anything. And that really makes me doubt my own viewpoints... but that's okay because it forces me to actually look below the surface and see what actually lies behind face value. Yes, that means I have to work harder to look at what's really going on and not rely on just what I feel at the moment. Real life is hard work and some folks truly put more effort into it than others. That's okay because it simply is the truth. And there's another truth that I hate to admit to. There are some of us that are just better at it than others. And that's okay. I am not one of those people. I don't look pretty when I work hard. It's a tough slog and there are days that I am a complete mess when I walk out of the classroom or after I've survived and ugly session of writer's block. I don't glide with a sense of ease between tasks, but stumble, fall to my knees, curse, fall down again, bloody my nose, and roll around in the mud, and curse more... but Nico... he's smooth as melted butter and cooler than the other side of the pillow. He's one of those rare few that put in countless hours, works with numerous people, and still seems to have the energy to take care of what comes next. Yes, he might look like he's just taken his hand off of the static electricity ball at the science museum...if you've ever seen what hair looks like when you do that... you'll know what I mean... but he's just keep driving on with an air of ..."It's just me." More than that... what I through the small lens today was leadership. Leadership ain't easy... Successful leaders suit up, show up, listen, share, and provide direction. Ego takes a back seat and allows others to drive the bus. At the end of the day, his name is on the dotted line, but the hand that signs the paychecks is also the one getting blistered with everyone else's hands. Leaders do that and more... and he seems to laugh throughout the whole day. And what do I learn from this??? I learn how to give an honest day's work, share the load, and laugh through it all...Focus on both what I love to do... and whom I love... all the while balancing it with all the grace I can muster. And when I feel tired, underappreciated, and not particularly good about myself... I have to remind myself that it's okay to be an iceberg. If people only see ten percent of what's really going on... that's okay because the effort is what truly matters. The effort and what we give to others is what really counts at the end of the day...and if I can close my eyes with the knowledge that I've done everything I can for that particular day... that's enough. Thanks, Nico. Keep on Keeping on!
