You hit on something very important, I think, Ben. Jimmy is and plays a relaxed guitar even when it sounds like he’d be clutching that neck and just slamming into that chord. It’s all loose, yet it sounds so effing kick ass! It’s a tricky part of guitar playing and honestly, when I used to play, I never quite grasped that concept. You can - and *should* be relaxed even when you’re sounding so killer. And it’s a difficult thing. And part of the ‘trick’ is dialing up a badass sound on your pedal(s) and amp and then just playing it relaxed so that you’re conveying bad ass wizardry while just sort of chilling.

Gonna make a suggestion, the D note on the A string (bent slightly sharp) should be played along with the open D string. Requires the string bend direction to be upwards rather than downwards. The two notes together rub together to add extra sauce. Page does the same trick on Four Sticks but on D and G strings.
@guitarworks25466 жыл бұрын
Adrian Farrell absolutely correct! bending the note down ends up muting the D string instead of letting it really add the intended dissonance....

Maybe one about practice routine and how to increase picking speed over how much time... 10bpm/week or something like that, great vids man!
@Cthuwu132048 жыл бұрын
There isn't a specific goal like 10 or 20 bpm a week you're shooting for. People develop guitar skills at there own speed. Many guitar teachers recommend just starting at a slow very comfortable speed, then increase it little by little (like 2-3 bpm) as you get more and more comfortable. As you increase your speed, make sure you concentrate on specific parts one at a time; like picking technique, staying in tempo, keeping the fingers relaxed/not tensing up, keeping motions efficient (pinky not flailing about, tight picking motions), notes are fretted properly, unused strings are muted, so on, so on. If something doesn't feel right or you notice you're off, concentrate even more on that specific part before moving forward. The key focus here is that you're developing proper technique FIRST, then get faster, not the other way around. Be consistent, persistent, and patient, and you'll eventually get there.
@larrygeetar93096 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Haga Start slow - real slow - and get the notes and the techniques correctly before increasing speed. It's like learning a play in sports. Learn, walk through, bring to speed, then repetition so you'll play it without thinking. You'll just DO it. 99% of people cannot learn something at full speed without breaking it down and learning it the way I described. Any guitar instructor (or coach, for that matter) worth his salt will tell you this.

One of those "subtle details making it sound exactly right" is a not so subtle detail...to me anyway.. that nobody seems to get right. Even you! (and you're for sure one of the better YT rock guitar lesson guys) Page hits that first power chord with a bit of a soft stab and it's an almost a full bar chord. That high Maj 3rd on the 9th fret (the not so subtle detail) sounds so bitchin' being in the first chord. Anyway, love you're vids' bud. Keep up the great work.

Are you sure the D (on the A string) bend isn't upwards (towards the low E) instead of downwards? Seems like bending down would tend to mute the open D, whereas bending up would mute the low E, which is probably more desirable. #nitpicking.

I remember hearing at one point that Page played that first D in the riff by doubling up the 5th fret A string with the open D string right below it. I've tried it and can't decide if that's true, but there is occasionally a "fuller" sound on that D that I can't otherwise explain.

I gave a talk on the "Internet, ie World-Wide-Web" back in 1995 on why (because of 3 major things) it would succeed as a new communications medium and eventually (TBD) replace or marginalize all others. The first was a technology that would allow even the marginally technically competent to create content that anyone could view, secondly it allowed for direct communication of advertising to users and more importantly that there would be an explosion of (mostly new) content because every person wants to share with (teach or show-off to) everyone else how much they know (on any topic). So, you are an example of one of those people who I identified would contribute to it's success, ie you are very skilled at something others want to learn, you want to share your knowledge, you demonstrate it in a novel and interesting way and apparently you don't mind if your subscribers/viewers surpass your level of expertise after "standing on your shoulders".
