Regarding herbicide, I cut the woodies and vines indivdually, leaving a stump. I carry a knee cushion, pruners, saw and a strong mixture of glyphosate in a small open container and paint it on the cut surface with a small paint brush. It's not as fast nor as accident prone as spraying, assuming the glyphosate container is carried within a larger container to avoid accidental spilling ....I carry the tools and glyphosate container in a bucket. This method works on vines, shrubs and trees, any time of the year. Temperature is not an issue as it is with spraying but rain might interfere. Any leaves remaining on the stump need to be painted. Smilax requires crucial timing ....it is only when the tender new leaves of Smilax first emerge in early Spring that covering those new leaves with glyphosate will kill Smilax.

Surprised that you’re so dry. Over here in East Tennessee we’ve had continuous rain. I guess we got yours.

We have been 2-4 weeks ahead in Central Illinois - with a mild winter. Echinacea is already budding when it usually does mid July. I have a way of protecting trees from deer damage, using cattle panels and stakes. You need to try something more effective.

The cattle page is work great, I just have to have them everywhere now. The deer population is out of control here.

Always love to see how your garden is doing! Just curious if you planted that horseradish from a root cutting? I may have missed you planting that. It looks healthy !!

Thank you! I got this as a gift from a fellow gardener. I think he dug I’ve one from his garden, potted it and shared it with me. It’s doing really well in this spot- more shade than sun. It’s a tricky plant here in the southeast.

I love your greenhouse. Everything looks good. How did the poppies do out front?

If you prune half your phlox after blooming, would they reflush and bloom in September or October?
