Dr. Barkley, just a minor correction for the second paper. The monoamine reuptake inhibitors (MRI) are not monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI). For example, venlafaxine and duloxetine are SNRI and bupropion is an NDRI. MAOI is another class of drug, which include drug like selegiline. Usually when I see 'monoamine xxxx inhibitors' I would assume it is MAOI too, so it explains the confusion. I hope I don't come across as nitpicky. Thank you for your work as always!

I've always been sick of people insisting that video games are dangerous, cause violence etc, but then I remembered that at the height of my world of warcraft adventures I often forgot to eat, sleep and bathe lmao. I guess people dont generally do that with other hobbies, severe adhd here. I used video games to cope and escape.

Also ADHD here, and pretty much my entire adult network of friends and aquaintances are ADHD or some kind of autistic with ADHD. This is something that we do when we get absorbed into our hobbies regardless of what they are. Ever almost peed yourself on the way to the toilet because your book was too interesting to put down? Haha, the book that you can perfectly well take with you if you want to even XD

The evidence for it is very poor and it is plausibly completely worthless for this indication. I'm agnostic, but I think it's plausible it's used for simplistic mechanistic reasons-it targets, in part, the dopamine transporter-and is Schedule IV, making it less of a headache.

Playing videos is not about ‘poor impulse control’. It is about self-medicating: video games are designed to deliver dopamine to the brain in copious amounts. The brain will seek a way to meet its needs and double down on whatever works.

I have tried different meds for my adhd. I’m 68 and with the meds I had to stop because they made me have a sense of wanting to go the bathroom all the time. My pharmacist suggested I take one pill every third day so my body becomes used to it and gradually take it every second day and if all goes well every day. Can you offer my your opinion on this approach.

I came across a newer stimulant a year or two ago that is only used under certain circumstances, Can not remember the name as it is not approved in Canada. From what I remember it was a prescribed metathatmine(crystal meth). Does anyone know the name of it as I can check at my pharmacy to see if it has been approved by Health Canada. In short I have been diagnosed with a neuropathway blockage for the regular stimulants. I refuse to take antidepressants as they all failed miserably with bad experiences. Thanks all

I am convinced it must not be that severe. Perhaps this is just my snap judgement but I am in the thick of it right now with 2/3 kids severely impaired by ADHD plus myself and my partner...I've never been a person who was quick to medical intervention, but I am sure that I would not be here today without it. Even on combination therapy...we are barely living at all. Just existing. I don't have the luxury to look for "alternatives". Sorry, I am in a bit of a funk right now with what seems to be a trend of people jumping on the ADHD bandwagon and in my opinion it's worse than the traditional stigma around ADHD. So the highly judgemental position I've taken (and I realize it's not accurate) is if you feel the meds are optional, then...it's likely not ADHD.

I can understand your point of view. Do you have people around to give you breaks? It sounds a real struggle. I am utterly astonished (still) with how effective this meditation is for me! I’ve just started ADHD therapy/coaching too now and I’m feeling positive about the future and a possible career (at 48!) Hang in there, little ones are a joy but also overwhelming, even without everything that comes on top with neurodivergence! ❤x

It turns out that in my article I need to cite other publications, and in your video references to the data presented do not appear, even though I understand that you are the greatest reference on the topic that we have today. Thousands of papers appear on Google Scholar, but most are not relevant to my article. Could you help me with some references, please?

FWIW, IIRC, in a conference lecture a decade or so ago (a video of which is among his most popular, I think it’s the “30 Essential Ideas” playlist), in talking about ADHD and *substance abuse,* I think he said that of all the drugs of abuse, marijuana was the most pernicious for people with ADHD. To be clear, that’s an indictment of *recreational marijuana use and abuse.* Whether or not cannabinoids have medicinal potential for ADHD symptom reduction under more controlled conditions (dosage, etc.), is a separate issue.

If caffeine, nicotine, marijuana, video games, going to the range, and working are 'the best' treatments, are you advocating the same for children? And, either you are a child or a woman, or by your own words you should not be trying to use your 'treatments'? I'm glad you found some things that help you but why deny other adult males from trying to find medical help?
