Hi Dr. Barkley, what do you think about the FAA’s stance on ADHD and adhd medication? Basically, adhd medication is banned by the FAA. While it isn’t a disqualifying condition in aviation per se, a pilot with adhd has to pass a battery of expensive psychological/cognitive exams if they wish to fly. If they pass these exams and get their medical certificate, they aren’t allowed to take any adhd medications or else risk getting their medical revoked.

Hi Dr. Barkley, could you do a video on the ADHD-OCD comorbidity? There's little information on this interesting duo together, and I'd like to learn more about it and how they interact with each other. Thanks for all that you do! Great video!

I recommend checking out Dr. Barkley series: Life Course Outcomes of ADHD - Part 2 - Persistence to Adulthood. You could likely start at Part 2 (Part 1 is about children) and it leads to Part 3 and 4 which will likely answer your questions regarding ADHD symptoms increasing as an adult.

So I have social media addiction (watching KZbin in my case) and at least subclinical ADHD. I think it's very similar to gaming addiction. I steer clear of gaming. My question: how the hell do I manage this?

If you have a smartphone maybe try replacing it with a regular cellphone to avoid the temptation to look at youtube while you're out and about.

JOMO app. Best yearly investment I made. it's something like 3à bucks a year. The app is always updated, you can ask and vote for features and the devs are listening carefully and are interested by the reasons behind you asking for some features. The app is on iOS and macOS and you can basically block any app in the configuration you like (timing, breaks allowed or not, for how long, under which conditions etc.). they have developed their automation with shortcuts too so you can do some cool things.

Are there any studies that look at the outcomes of ADHD coupled with a TBI experienced as an adult? Does it make the ADHD symptoms worse?
@SteelmanArgument2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your work Russell! Have you or can you please address Robert Plomin and his scientific research concluding ADHD (and many other disorders) as a question of a spectrum rather than a binary? I'm thinking about his book Blueprint in particular, and how he argues that a high amount of ADHD symptoms IS a disability, but it isn't necessarily something that should be a binary disorder as we know it today. Rather that somebody with diagnosed ADHD is in a very high percentile of genetic propensity for the symptoms in question.
@russellbarkleyphd20232 ай бұрын
I agree with Robert. It is a spectrum as I mention in my videos on why ADHD is a disorder and also those on executive functioning. But at some point along this genetically influenced spectrum failures of functioning and thus consequential harms befall the individual which is the point where a line is drawn and disorder is diagnosed so as to serve to provide assistance to such people and thus reduce the harms. The two perspectives are not incompatible. But clinicians do need to make categorical decisions about both diagnoses and especially decisions to treat as do schools, colleges, and governments as well as insurance companies. Be well.

@@russellbarkleyphd2023I see, thanks for the clarification! I suspected that you agreed with Robert. I respect you both and find the field of psychology/psychiatry to be very interesting myself as an ADHDer. Would love to contribute if I could!

the alcohol use + adhd having worse heart dysfunction; I think it could be explained by having high comorbidity with EDS (Ehlers-Danlos syndromes ) especially the vascular type.this type have weak blood vessels .

Hi Dr. Barkley, Have you thought ever thought about going on larger platforms and talking about attention disorders. ADHD of course, but definitely CDS. Someone like Andrew Huberman, he has a massive audience, and he could really get the word out on CDS.

I'm not sure Huberman would be a good match for Dr. Barkley. Their approach seems very different to me...

@Najahfreeman I think it would be fine. Huberman is pretty soft-spoken, and Dr.B is a bit more energetic. But Huberman has had energetic guests before. Shouldn't be a big deal.

@PaxHeadroomАй бұрын
It is possible to become addicted to anything if the circumstances are right. Addiction is result of a disfunction in the brain's reward systems. It can developed from exposure to habit forming substances, or it can form in response to things that aren't typically habit-forming. Some people have differences in the structure or chemical behaviour of their brains that predispose these systems to malfunctioning. This can be due to chronic conditions like ADHD, or it can be due to more acute factors that can happen to anyone, like anxiety, depression, or trauma. Perhaps you should reflect on why you're so opposed to the idea of something that is provably real in some people.
