Dr. Barkley I was amazed by your description of adhd . Nobody has ever known me better than you (without even meeting me)

That pain study tracks for me. I would get leg cramps, tummy aches, headaches. Looking back I was pretty stressed out even at that age and I think the tummy aches were from stress. At 61 (diagnosed this year) I know now that I am not only ADHD, probably AuDHD, but I am hypermobile and a lot of pain stems from that.

It's an interesting finding. I feel that medication can also increase or decrease the appetite, but other than that people with severe add may have issues with taking care of their hygiene and nutrition, which is part of the self regulation

Dr. barkley, what would it take to validate the symptoms for cognitive dysengagement syndrome on a large diverse population. This seems like the last step to getting this condition on the DSM 6 and getting us help. Could we raise money to fund a study?
@OrafuDaАй бұрын
I am not Dr. Barkley, but as far as I understand this, and IMHO, one of the things that needs to be shown with more studies is that CDS is separable from ADHD. So, more studies showing that there are a significant number of people who do clearly not have ADHD (no impulsivity / hyperactivity, and also no significantly disruptive external distractibility and problems to bring themselves to start tasks, sustain attention to tasks and finish them, etc.) but do have CDS (involuntary and disruptive mind wandering, and taking longer to complete tasks). Also, that the mind wandering is not part of another condition, like, for example, major depression. I do not think that clinicians have a problem accepting that the symptoms of CDS exist - although there should probably be more studies on the prevalence of these as well.

@russellbarkleyphd2023Ай бұрын
There are a number of studies now showing differences with ADHD in virtually all of them. I did a US national survey and found a prevalence of 5.4%. also no age related declines as in ADHD. for a research review see my video on this and look in the description where I sited the most recent one. you can actually go to that journal and get the entire article as it’s open access. that video also goes through many of the findings from the review. I have rating scales for clinicians to use to identify CDS, which then was called SCT. be well.

With the childrens' pain study, did they look at any correlations to stress or anxiety levels?

The study on metabolic genotype is super interesting! I'd be really curious to learn your understanding or see a research review on iron deficiency (and supplementation/correction of deficiency) for ADHD? My sense from reading the literature is that iron deficiency is more common in ADHD, that correcting it improves some symptoms, and the biology of it makes sense in that iron is involved in energy/metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis. But screening for iron deficiency and treating it in pediatric or adult ADHD still seems to be not widely done? Do you have a sense of why, or how not addressing this hinders ADHD management? It seems that there are studies going back to the early 2000s on this topic.

I find the pain study quite interesting. I'm very familiar with the links between emotions, particularly loneliness and physical pain (mostly studied in relation to chronic pain). Im recently diagnosed with inattentive adhd, and manage a lot of emotional disreglation. I have found pain killers can be helpful in reducing my aversion to emotional pain and rejection sensitivity.

Did the eating disorder study factor in medication use, since some ADHD medications can impact appetite? Also, for the reporting of pain, has the tendency toward “empathic” (sorry I don’t know the correct diagnostic term) responses (such as perceiving a feeling of someone else’s pain as affecting oneself) been looked at? Thank-you for your tremendous work!

I suspect some of the increased pain may be due to higher rates of hypermobility in kids with adhd. This could also contribute to the sex differences seen in reports of generalized pain, since hypermobility tends to be more common & symptomatic in girls.

Pain is the result of anxiety, root cause of ADHD syndrome is anxiety, due to past trauma and emotional insecurity. Trauma can come from other internal or external issue. They are different trauma levels. No more. Surprise to make a study about pain as it is the result.

Thank you for your work Doc. Apart from the silly jokes you've got it all. But do you really think the environment could be just a mistake, maybe the study in general was in an area where the diets are impacting people's health in terms of inclination for diabetes and alike? Dr. Barkley, can you say anything to the video linked below? Dr. Lavine seems to be muddying the water as far as ADHD and the sources of the disorder (he mentions sugar flippantly), while also seemingly conflating the disorder with it's co-morbidities. I have been to a therapist who specialises in Somatic Experience therapy (SE) which Dr. Lavine I believe invented as a treatment. There is a great amount of resistance to those who practice SE to recognise ADHD as a genetic disorder, preferring to focus on toxins, natal chemical influences (smoking, drinking). So I wonder if you have any comment? It would be much appreciated. Thank you! Kenny kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJyld32EatuFitksi=O0JFDnMbOAnzNYrH
