The pager model is the Gold Apollo AR924. It's a ruggedized, receive only, alphanumeric pager with almost 90 days of battery life. The communication is not encrypted. They can't be geolocated beyond knowing their subscription region. A Flipper Zero or SDR can be used to read pager messages. They usually work well in places cell phone coverage is poor. It's also possible to run a rogue pager network in places without coverage. We hams run our own pager networks. In commercial paging a high power signal is sent out on one or more radio towers. The pager simply wakes up and receives the message when it hears one or more unique identifiers. I'm obsessed with all things radio as a Ham if you ever have a radio related query.

haha u dont even need a flipper. the "SDR community" makes a thing of it... the only radio transmissions no longer encrypted seem to be medical pagers but who wants to demodulate and read that that 😆 (listening to the coppers on a saturday night back in the analogue days was kinda fun once upon a time.. for like half an hour. then it became depressing). im befriending you, i wish to join an AM ham club :)

@@henrikoldcorn If you mean the profile pic that's a throwback photo. I meant to only leave it a week. I'll have to update it. 😆

@@milfordjohnson2289 I would love to make a "modern" muti-mode pager. It would use an ESP32, a CC1101, and possibly something like an NRF. The plan would be to to support standard paging reception, Meshtastastic, and a "canary network" using DNS to covertly send messages over public WiFi networks. Usually DNS isn't blocked by captive portals so no need to log in when sending a message. Of course if spied on WiFi could be used for location but it's more about hiding in the noise and the general "cool factor". I have a CYD(Cheap Yellow Display) coming to play with the WiFi aspect. I also have a Meshtastic node up and a T-deck plus in shipping. EDIT: There are still a few police departments I can monitor without any encryption, several other emergency services, and a CASINO! I was shocked the casino doesn't use encryption. Two SDR allow the ability to do trunking.
