I would encourage people that don't already have both to opt in to Bridgy Fed so those of us that prefer Mastodon or BlueSky can follow them from the other platform. You just follow the Bridgy Fed bot to opt in then give out the handle it creates. There's no extra work after that. The opt in process was only added because some people were being Karen's.

the other day i heard somebody having a whinge about some crypto coin person whos coin performed the latest rugpull upon its "investors"... and this individual seemed to blame the authorities for some reason... for not bringing these calculating thieves to justice. i disagree. i think the authorities have been warning people waaaaay past any reasonable amount of warning that "these gambling operations are highly risky, and althought the reserve bank is hardly a perfect angel... clearly you guys seem to think you would never lose at the casino. which is fine, freedom for all! enjoy the financial freedom! (this is a reference to some crypto rich who seem to think everyone is jealous of their crypto genious... clearly, there are people who do well through otherwise non stupid means).

Regarding trying to improve performance of inserting email addresses - could you use something like a bloom filter, held locally to the uploader, to check is the email address has been seen before? I.e. Rather than just an "insert where not exists", first check if you've already got it in SQL, and if not, then send the SQL insert. I bet checking a local filter would be faster than doing a SQL query into Azure.

Is it so important to flush the cache immediately? Couldn't you have a TTL of let's say 24 hours and have a continuous but smaller load on the db? If you're loading new data breaches and flushing about once a day anyway then the average would be about the same.

Hi troy. Again this is the catch 22 thing: if you don't protect your privacy with some pseudonym or randomness factors, then your ID open to be used as by anyone who has access to it. If you do take privacy protection measures... it makes it seem like you've got something to hide/are up to/could be up to no good (as obviously a lot of crime happens via obfuscated means). Then there's the issue of being the product... anyone who is honest has or is paying the price of becoming a commodity and is lost in the confusion of it all. Including me... (and you too by the sounds of it) despite my efforts to learn and help with security where I can... anyone can point fingers now and blame some competing force as being the negative force thanks to the lack of trust and negativity fostered by the current state of global and local affairs. It f sucks mate.

I'm a journalist who also covered the story. In fact I quoted this very channel for some great insights on the attack! Based on that typo where they've said Internet Archive is up and running again after "it a ddos attack knocked it offline", it seems the journo was flustered and overwhelmed with this story. They were probably originally going to run "Internet Archive is up and running again after it suffered a ddos attack", then later pivoted to "Internet Archive is up and running again after a ddos attack knocked it offline". The fact this got through and also wasn't picked up in editing reeks of a time-poor, blustered crunch of a writeup. Happens to the best of us, but this level of misattribution is pretty bad lol.

The BBC articles I read routinely have errors like that. I know getting things perfect is really hard, but it genuinely seems like they simply don’t have editors read things through before publishing.

Just a slight correction - the pagers went off in Lebanon not Palestine. Hezbollah is a Lebanese militant group. Re. Pagers - Because pagers are simply receivers they work very well in emergency situations. A mobile network could easily get overwhelmed if an emergency message had to be sent out to 1000s of mobiles in a single moment - because each mobile needs to negotiate an individual connection with phone infrastructure. Whereas it is trivial for a pager system to send a message to all pagers in an area in an instant. Pager systems can still get overwhelmed by too much traffic but that is when there are too many different messages queued one after the other. I believe this was an issue during Black Saturday (biggest bush fires in so called Victoria, Australia in several decades). Downside of these type of unencrypted pagers - as others have said - anyone can receive any message with fairly cheap equipment - so Hezbollah would not be using them for secure communications. When I was with the CFA (fire brigade in so called Victoria, Australia) we all had pagers and one of our members set up a receiver on his computer at home and published to a web page, all the pager messages for the region - I think we needed a password to access it, but really anyone with $30 of hardware and a bit of time can do the same. In reality, our pagers received every message sent out for the entire region - they just looked at each messages code and displayed / trigger the alert sound for the ones relevant to them based on what codes they are programmed with.
