It’s staggering how much stuff you can fit into your week: work, quality time with wife and kids, tv shows, recording all these videos and a couple of books. How do you do it? Do you not sleep? I’m going to need a “week in the life of Mike” video to explain your impressive time management skills 😂

Let’s gooooo!!!!!!!! I just read Children of Time this week and loved it! I’m already halfway through the sequel and loving that too. Totally agree on the poignant Expanse finale, so so good. Also give Legend its time-the second half was approximately 96389163 times better for me than the first half. I’m glad you’re on such a reading roll, and I have to catch up to you in RotE as I’m just into the third book of Rain Wild.

Godzilla Minus One is still in theaters and you NEED to see it on the biggest screen possible. I’m in Dallas and I just watched it yesterday in a Cinemark XD theater and it was mind blowing. I love the Monsterverse and all the movies they’ve done, but Minus One is the best Godzilla movie I’ve seen since the original movie from the 50s. It’s excellent, and it’s almost like it’s a Godzilla film rather than a Godzilla movie. I was so invested in these characters and Godzilla himself was legit terrifying. It’s nothing like the Monsterverse, and I didn’t know that I would even like it, let alone love it. Like you I’m here for the monsters brawling, but this one was hauntingly good. It’s probably my favorite movie I’ve seen this year. Please try to see it on the big screen! Also, they did this on a $15million budget.

Reading Drenai Saga made me feel like I was living through an epic power metal album from the 80's. Loved it, but understand what you mean about Legend feeling like an author's first book. It's a little choppy and rough around the edges. I read it similar to the Conan Saga, everything is written out of order but it begins to piece itself together with each entry into the overarching series.

While I thought the World Building was a bit generic (Standard European Inspired “Low” Fantasy World Fusion of Conan and Tolkien vs an Genghis Khan/Attila the Hun-expy, and even a fan of soft magic as myself, could feel the magic to be rather “what serves the plot” and mostly out of the blue), Gemmell has a great legacy as a «trope standardizer», especially with characters such as Druss the Legend (a re-enlisted Retired Veteran Warrior and leader with both physical and mental wounds, inspired by revisionist Westerns and War Stories, compared to the then more standard farm boy/prince or adult Warrior/Rogue/Wizards of fantasy/S&S). I was prepared for epic battles and good writing, but the humanity of his characters (of both good and bad) is genuinely inspirational even to this day! Orrin is perhaps the clearest example to my mind, who by a lesser writer could have so easily been turned into a paper cut stereotype character, while Gemmell gives him an arc that almost brought tears to my eyes! Gemmell’s themes of Perseverance and Courage do gain an extra dimension, when knowing he was battling Cancer when writing this stories and survived for decades and multiple stories later! I also think it natural that the story of a weakened nation not surrendering, struck a major cord in post-Falkland War UK and post-Vietnam/Reaganite US.

Totally get it with Legend. The story is a metaphor for life and the author’s existential crisis having thought he might have cancer. The waiting is all part of it. Knowing that backstory definitely made me feel differently about it, then I would have treating it like a typical fantasy story.

I read the Gemmel books in chronological, character order, Starting with Waylander (who is still my personal favourite character), then Druss (beginning with the first of the prequels, and I feel this is the best way to go, especially based on what you said about feeling like being dropped in at book 6). And I am now reading the Skilgannon novels and Druss also makes an appearance in these, and yes, with all the prequels, then Legend, then "White Wolf" (Skilgannon book one) its like having an old friend back. Gemmel also has two crime novels, one printed after his death. "White Knight Black Swan" which had a Guy Ritchie vibe to it and was very enjoyable. And Rhyming Rings which was also very enjoyable, it's a mystery/crime thriller with a supernatural twist. Expanse: I loved books 1-4, and books 6-9. I can see why amazon didn't do 6-9, but it would have been an amazing series if they had, because those last three novels are strong. BTW, all the Drenai novels are narrated by Sean Barrett on audible. And he and Gemmel are a match on the same level as Abercrombie and Pacey,

David Gemmells Rigante series is his strongest series. The first chronicles of Druss the Legend is mind blowingly good and the Waylander trilogy within the Drenai saga. Some sequels of Gemmells happen hundreds of years later and its easy to feel like youve skipped a book or two. I read them in chronological order instead of order of publication and that made it better for me.
