A silly contest with only USA and Canada participating...? The World Series! 🤣 On a serious note, they tried to bring Eurovision to the US as "American Song Contest", where artists from different states competed. It didn't take wing, perhaps because it didn't have the campiness and charm that Eurovision is all about. Or perhaps there just wasn't a market niche left that ASC could've carved for itself, with all the other already established talent/singing shows. Certainly didn't help that ASC was marketed as A Very Serious Competition, instead of goofy wholesome fun celebrating different music. Songs were on the safe & generic side, and since the US is very culturally uniform they didn't have that much variance to them (like the ethnic influences we have in Eurovision music). I really hoped it would've succeeded, then we would have (friendly?) annual competitions US vs EU, about which winner becomes a bigger star 😄

The Nordics are very much like siblings. It's like if you would ask a 12 year old if his brother or sister is his best bud. Like we're close, we do love eachother, but it's a lot of tough love and banter and sarcasm (sometimes it seems like Americans don't get sarcastic humour as much, it seem to confuse some of them or fly over their heads). You can say the rudest and silliest thing about your siblings, that you wouldn't say about anyone else. But if someone else would say that exact same thing, then it's like... _what_ did you just say about my sibling?! You don't have the right to say that about one of us!

Moomins (the white hippos) are characters created by a Finnish writer Tove Jansson. They are very popular around the world. The song is Ievan Polkka, a traditional Finnish polka song, and the dancers are dancing polka. The towels are from the Finnish sauna. The word sauna itself comes from the Finnish language, and there are around 2.3 million saunas in Finland (and our population is 5.6 million). We have more saunas than cars here! Also sauna was invented in Finland thousands of years ago. It's an important part in our culture. The dresses had the Finnish flag as an apron and they were inspired by traditional Finnish clothing. The background images were inspired by Finnish design, especially Iittala's Taika-series. Hope this helps understand the Finnish section of this interval act.

Watching the Finland part of the interval act as someone who is 50% Swedish and 50% Finnish: I approve this message. They played around with Finnish stereotypes: 1. the Moomins “mumintrollen” are beloved characters created by the Swedish speaking Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson. 2. The Sauna culture (Western saunas originated in Finland, and there are 0,62 saunas per capita in Finland; i.e, one sauna for every 1.59 person). 3. Finnish Polkka. The song is a Finnish folksong called Ievan Polkka. (The melody can be traced back to the 18th century while the lyrics was written 1928 by Eino Kettunen). •And I think the dresses are a play on the Finnish National costumes (Kansallispuku) “often” used around midsummer. When it comes to how we view our neighbouring countries from a Swedish point of view: Norway is the little brother/sister that won the lottery. Denmark is the sibling that we keep picking fights with, and we can be mean to them but noone else can be mean to them. Finland is our beloved cute, slightly introverted, stubborn and crazy uncle standing between us and any threats from the east. There is no other people you’d rather stand between you and any potential threat; You don’t provoke the Finns, we’re proud, stubborn and crazy (in all of the best ways of course😇).

Why is Australia in Eurovision? The simple answer is that to participate, countries need an active membership in the EBU, which Australian TV network SBS is (and where ESC is televised here). Also, Aussies are obsessed with it, so on the 60th anniversary of the ESC we were invited to perform in the interval and it went from there … I (as an Aussie) find it weird too but it’s fun. We in Scandinavia are buddies, and extended also the Nordic country. We have similar languages (Sweden, Norway, Denmark), and can mostly understand each other. Icelandic is harder, and Finnish is completely different. Finland was swedish for a long time, and have a big swedish spoken population. Norway was in a union with Sweden, and part of Sweden was danish long time ago. Similar culture and political system.

I'm afraid a lot of context is required to truly appreciate this interval act. There are little gems like representing Cyprus, or recycling the host.

I highly recommend watching or reading something of the Moomins. It has such a special vibe.

Sweden has had more wars with Denmark than any other countrys have. But these days we are siblings, we argue, tease, joke, but in the end of the day we are united. It's the same with our other neighbors Norway and Finland.

One of my favourite interval acts was the flash mob in 2010 (Norway was hosting). A time when Eurovision really did feel like it united Europe

I also think the Flashmob was one of the best interval acts ever. Flashmobs are nothing spectacular nowadays anymore, but back then it was kinda new and it was just great fun to watch. Also, it’s the year where my country won 🤣🙈😊

Australia has been invested in eurovision for AGES! I was on exchange in australia way back in 97 and i remember how everybody would eagerly gather round the television during the show. They were invited to start participating in 2015 to celebrate an anniversary i think… If the US start showing the same passion for the contest then perhaps? So start spreading the news boys!

Greece has a long-standing history of beekeeping, and it has more beehives per acre than any other country in Europe, so it's no surprise that Greek honey is regarded as the best in the world.

When it comes to which country we feel closest to, in Switzerland 🇨🇭 there is a special situation, because we have several cultures and languages here. So Swiss people from the French part feel closest to France 🇫🇷, while Swiss people from the Italian part feel closest to Italy 🇮🇹. For them, the language on both sides of the border is more or less the same. However, the connection from Swiss people from the German part, where I live, towards Germany 🇩🇪 is a bit different, and one of the reason is, that we speak a special dialect of German here, which Germans find rather funny and weird and often even incomprehensible. On the other hand, their „proper“ German sometimes sounds to us a bit aggressiv and loud. So we probably rather see the Netherlands as our best buds. 🇳🇱 But all in all, we also do get along well with Germans, and many of them are coming to Switzerland to work and live here, because the salaries are much higher and the quality of life is better. If this is true or not, all of you out there can hopefully check out yourself next year, when Switzerland is hosting the song contest. 🌈
