Amethyst cracked her gem and almost died. The fact that Lapis was able to lift the entire ocean, and create mirror gems to fight the Crystal Gems at the same time WITH A CRACKED GEM really goes to show how scarily powerful she is.

Steven is one of a kind, the only known hybrid of a Gem. And Gems don't need to breath to survive, being why they can be inside of water and in space and survive. Lapis didn't know Steven needed to breath to survive, so she just drop the entire ocean on him because she thought it would do him no harm.

Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem mark the mid-season one finale, but they were also intended to be the series finale if SU was cancelled suddenly before the end of that season, which was a distinct possibility considering the slow world-building and lack of plug-in-anywhere stories. Prepare for a steep learning curve about Gems from now to the end of S1, with further spurts through the rest of the series. SU is part morality play (i.e. Steven learning lessons about life and maturing) and part mystery; the mystery is now starting, and like all mysteries you have to pay attention to little things that may not have seemed important at the time but become vital later on. Steven's saving Lapis encouraged her to follow her dream of becoming a professional baseball player.

I can believe you guessed the series twist! You're right, the gems are manifestations of earth. Some are elements, some are values, but if they leave, they take their parts of earth with them. The Blowfish was wind, Centipeedle was acid, Amethyst is fun, Pearl is honor, and Garnet is strength, which is why Pearl and Amethyst wanted to fuse with her. I probably shouldn't spoil why the Gems disobeyed orders and kept the experiment going though, that's a few season ahead.

Lapis Lazuli has insane Hydro kinetic powers. It makes you wonder what other gems out there are capable of doing. Anyways, moving on to Lapis’s grudge against the crystal gems. I’m glad she eventually got past it later down the road and became friends with Steven. Hanging out at his dad’s car wash, where she works as an employee. It’s also where she lives, since she doesn’t have a room back at the temple. She helps Greg clean cars in exchange for residence in the car wash.

So the thing to realize about this double feature is that while S1 was released as 52 episodes, it was originally produced as two seasons of 26 episodes. That's why Mirror Gem / Ocean Gem is structured as and functions as a season finale for what's sometimes referred to as "season 1A".

The pacing of Mirror Gem is insane. And the way the tone switches to pure DREAD the second that Steven says "you never told me it's like a person!" is insane. I'm lazy, but in these two episodes, which were originally meant to be a season finale before things got moved around, there are references to every single episode that's come before. It's really great. But yeah, I can't wait for Lapis to come back with the entirety of the ocean of Europa and just utterly annihilate the Earth.

So if i remember correctly, this was conceived as a potential season finale if the show didnt get renewed. It introduces a mysterious new character, gives us some lore revelations, has our whole main cast come together, with steven especially getting to demonstrate his character growth, and It leaves on not even really a cliffhanger, just a mystery. Makes you wonder just how big this storys universe is. Lucky for us, it did get renewed, and that mystery wont remain a mystery.

Spoiler Alert: All the gems actually come from inside of a star, the nearest star system to earth. They’re each made to mimic organic life from different planets. The crystal gems are all earth animals. Pearl is actually an earth bird, Amethyst is a hedgehog, and Garnet is a mantis shrimp. Steven’s mom was actually made after a lion, hence the pet lion she kept.

I love how beautiful this show will subtly introduce pieces bit by bit. You can't watch this episode without understanding so many things from previous ones. Gems can reform their bodies from Pearl, they can get cracked like Amethyst, objects with gems can be magical like the pillow, Steven's healing spit with Connie and can work on gems like we see with the Centipeetle, etc etc All those tiny bits of info merge in your head for you to understand this entire encounter with Lapis. It's such a genius way to dripfeed information without you thinking too hard about it in the moment but make it more impactful for moments that do matter.

These two episodes mark a major progression in the series. During the first half of the first season you can tell that the series is trying to find its footing and cement its identity. The quality and tone are very uneven. But this is where the show really establishes itself. From this point the quality continues to get steadily better and better, and everything feels more polished and well-developed.

19:30 "He healed you and you just left him to fall and die?" This ties into a headcanon/pattern I noticed about the gems; they're a lot more physical than humans. And I mean, why not? When they take physical damage, they poof, unless it's to the gem directly, and it's implied those are pretty sturdy to anything but a direct hit. It pops up a lot later in the series, but this thing with Lapis is a good example of it; I think gems in general just don't naturally take physical safety into consideration much. They work out arguments while literally fighting them out, oftentimes the gems do things with Steven that seem reckless from a human perspective, but if severe physical damage is an inconvenience at most 9/10, why would you worry about it?

I was waiting ALL week with so much anticipation for this reaction! I haven't really commented on a Steven Universe reaction before this, but I felt this milestone required it. Steven Universe was my favorite show for a long while. It started airing when I was in Middle School (about 12 years old), but I only started really getting into it around this point in the series. Some episodes from this first 26 I hadn't seen until I did my rewatch for your reactions because Cartoon Network didn't have the reruns I needed to catch up (not to mention the reruns weren't in series order). I actually never finished the whole series while it was still airing, as I had stopped watching TV for the most part in favor of watching KZbin creators. But yeah, this shit gets good, and very soon too. Sorry for yapping so long. I look forward to 11 weeks from now!

You finally saw my favorite character. I don't care what other people say about Lapis, she was just going through some things and the made me feel ALOT of sympathy for her. Luckily, she met the right people to help her through it so I'm glad.

Ahhhhhhh!!!! I'm so happy to see you get to these episodes. I'm pretty sure it was here where I really started loving SU, mainly because I love characters with water based powers as a kid (Like Lapis, Katara from Avatar and Nya from Ninjago) Also fun fact: This episode was at one point meant to be a finale. I forgot if it was finale for the season or the whole show in general. Whatever the case, it ended up getting picked up again for more, so consider this more of a mid-season finale.

Just to clarify. When Steven used activated his shield and made the water gems fall apart. I’m pretty sure they were defeated by the sound/ frequency emitted when the shield was hit. Not any new power.
