South African Railways Narrow Gauge - Weenen Branch Last Revenue Train
The last revenue train on the Weenen Branch occurred on August 31, 1983. Bruno Martin and Kevin Hall were in attendance and captured the event on video. This was the third to last train to traverse the rails. The Locomotive was NG/G-13 No.77 with driver, G P J Rademeyer and fireman, J S Strydom, and the guard whose name was recorded but has unfortunately been lost.
On Monday, 5 September, No.77 with coach No.4 in tow, returned to retrieve the remaining 17 empty goods wagons left at Weenen Station.
The last working of the line was by No.77 to Weenen for weed spraying on Saturday, 5 October. The usual make-up of the weed-spraying consist was NZ 201, DZ 862, an open wagon and a van (usually coach No.4).
The line was severed when the R103 was re-tarred and the Weenen to Esctourt district road was tarred sometime in 1984. The rails were lifted in 1986.

The Weenen train race was a annual running event. My late Father and freinds turned into a grand occasion and used to "race" against the train in their vintage cars. Good times and memories.

Ai hoe hartseer en nostalgies raak ek nou. My oupa was laaimeester op Estcourt en die smalspoor het net onder sy sinkkantoortjie verbygeloop. Ek en my boetie het menige vakansies by hulle gaan kuier en meeste dae was ons by die loods waar ons heeldag op die treine baljaar het. Net na nege in die oggende sou die Weenen trein verbykom en ek sou altyd hardloop om hom te sien. Oom Bill het altyd vriendelik gewuif terwyl hy buite sy loko op die uitswaaistoeltjie sit. In 1975 het ek en my boetie saamgery van Estcourt af tot by die R103 waar my pa ons gekry het. Ek kan nie meer onthou of daar 'n halte was nie maar Oom Bill was gaaf genoeg om daar te stop. Ek moet nog iewers 'n foto hê waar my pa met sy reuse voete agtermekaar die spasie tussen die spore vul op daardie selfde plek. Hy was self 'n bekende met spoorlyne wat sy hele lewe vir Plasser gewerk het. My oupa en een van die drywers, Oom Jan Mostert, was huisvriende. Oom Jan het my eendag die stoom laat dryf by die loods vir seker net so 50 meter. Vir 'n 13-jarige was dit soos koek vir 'n weeskind. Ek het ook later jare een keer saam met hom op die diesel afgery na die Masonite fabriek toe.
