I'm pathetically happy with any vaguely accurate Highland accent in a film set in the Highlands so bad accents is something I'm used to, I've heard far worse to be honest, Simon Pegg was impressive but I think his wife is from Glasgow so he'd never get out alive if he did a bad accent

You make very amazing video content to watch. In addition I too like seeing & hearing Billy Connelly in movies; and especially ones where he uses a Scottish accent. Also; one of my top favorite movies I saw him in and is the very 1st one I watched with him in it was one where he played as a barkeeper in a music hall in a theater. I forget the full name of the movie since I saw it only the once when I was introduced to it by a school friend at a summer camp we were in together. But as I can recall it was named for part of the name the sailor's uncle. I saw it when I was 10 as well. It was an old movie about a young boy who had an uncle who raised him when his parents passed away while he was a kid & taught him to sail. He goes too see the uncle too after a sailing adventure when he is a young man & at the uncle's bar.

Hollywood tends to either tone down the Scottish accent to make it easier to understand for a wider audience, or play it up to be nearly incomprehensible for comedic effect. My friend and I used to quote Trainspotting and old Billy Connally stand up, as they were our favorite Scottish accents. I also love the dwarves from the Witcher games. They all seem to be voiced by enraged Scotsmen and it's pretty fantastic!

James Doohan who played the original Scotty on Star Trek had a big change from the TV show to the Star Trek movies, with the original cast, so to understand his accent you have to look at the movies he done as well. To say Simon Pegg has a great Scottish accent is like saying Karen Gillan who played Amy Pond on Doctor Who and Peter Capaldi who played the 12 Doctor on Doctor Who have great Scottish accent as well. Well yeah they are from Scotland and when Karen Gillan and Peter Capaldi were on Doctor Who Steven Moffat was the Show runner, who is Scottish himself, and he made the character Amy Pond very Scottish and with the 12th Doctor he kept Peter Capaldi Scottish Accent, unlike David Tennant who didn't use his Scottish accent when playing the 10th Doctor. Also under Steven Moffat Doctor Who was the most Scottish out of all the years it been on. Also Sean Connery used his Scottish accent when acting. So yeah Simon Pegg , Karen Gillan, Peter Capaldi and Sean Connery all have some of the best Scottish accents because they used there every day voices.

William Wallace would not have worn either a kilt (to early) or war paint (to late). Engineers in the 19th century were called "scotties" because the University of Eddinburgh was the first school to teach about steam engines. I liked James Doohan in the episode "Day of the Dove" identifying a Scotts broad sword as a claymore, a mistake I can believe in the 22nd century.

I have to say, those weren't the best clips of James Doohan - he has a number of lines that every fan of the the original series quote from memory... those might have been the better examples of him - for good or ill. But you are right about film and television... technical accuracy is rarely called for in accents - sometimes it's just barely enough to suggest the origin... other times it's a complete caricature, and played for laughs. I would smilingly suggest that while most English speakers can follow Robert Burns' "My luve is like a red, red rose".... they tend to need footnotes to get much past "Wee, sleeket, cowran, tim'rous beastie"... in "To a Mouse"... But "Tam O' Shanter"... requires a full translation. :-) As always, it was great fun to watch your reaction. I look forward to the next.

The original Star Trek aired in the mid 60's, and my feeling is there might have been some fear that viewrs might not understand a more authentic accent. I LOVE Simon Pett's Scotty - but we're talking a difference of 40 years and the changing times. Let's not be too hard on James Doohan (Canadian born, but Irish ancestry.) who passed away in 2005. And his name is pronounced"Doo-an" not Doo-han" - just saying :-)

The best Scottish accent had to be Sheena Easton back in 1983 with the video of Almost Over You, she had to be the sexiest woman on the planet at that time. It is to bad she worked so hard at getting rid of it after moving to the states in 1981. I wonder if Scotland has forgiven her yet? I grew up with Star Trek so Scotty is still my favorite. Gotta throw in about the movie Braveheart, William Wallace was not a Highlander and did not wear a kilt.

Now you need to make a video rating how accurate to Scottish mannerisms the characters are. In the original Star Trek, Scotty (Is that a lazy name or what?) was usually drunk and trying to fight. Whereas in the newer ones, he seemed just more ill-tempered. So, we need a video on how accurate these film characters are to actual Scottish people.

The interesting part about James Doohan is that his native accent was from Vancouver. VERY different from both Irish and Scots, on the whole. If someone says 'Canadian Accent',. the first thought by most Americans is the stereotype "Bob and Doug McKenzie" accent. (Ontario and environs). However, if you tried to do "Ottawa Valley", it's called the Ottawa Valley Twang, and you can certainly tell the heavy Irish influence. Also, James Doohan _was_ a flight engineer in WW-II. The role was created entirely for him, rather than him auditioning for the role. That's the problem with big places - wide accent ranges. (Heck, even just London still has lots of accent differences). Scots/Irish are used a lot because they're easy to recognize, I suspect. And make for good joke fodder.

Where I live, we have only a faint accent and don't really use slang or "Scots". There is no such thing as a "Scottish" accent. Pegg is just hamming up typical Glaswegian. Als, Rowena's accent from Supernatural is fantastic. Really on point. It's a different kind of Scottish. Maybe one you haven't been exposed to as much?
