I've been a Weezer fan for a long time now, and I used to share that sentiment, but you realize eventually that it's all Rivers. Matt being there or not really doesn't make a difference with respect to the music, though he was a kickass dude and was far more than some background bass player (he yearned to be a frontman, hence the Rentals). RIP Mikey

Blue is weezers best in my opinion and Matt would have kept Rivers on check meaning no Ratitude. Also Rivers would have done songs from the black hole if Matt hadn't used that sound on The rentals. Matt easily also had the best charisma in the band. He also personified geek chic. Pinkerton is great btw but especially hailed because of its cult legend status. Blues songs are just as good and some even better

Jack Johnson the thing you are missing is that Matt acted like a filter, in that, if Rivers had wanted to move in the more modern poppy Weezer direction Matt would have said no and opposed it. That’s why he was fired, because he would voice opinions. Pat said when the green album came out that he was only staying for the money, because he didn’t like the musical direction. It’s obvious that Pat and Beff and Scott just go with whatever Rivers wants, for the paycheck. Matt wouldn’t have, that’s the value of Matt. But Rivers decided to take complete control instead.
