Weezer - My Name Is Jonas (The Kitchen Tape)

On May 10, 1994, DGC Records released “Weezer”, the self-titled debut album by Weezer. The story has been told and re-told many times, but the crux of it was that no one thought it would do very well, even though all the band and the band’s small inner circle felt they’d made a really good album. The assumption was that people would say “who?” and laugh at the audacity of a new band putting out a debut album on a major label, with no fan base, no single out, nothing.
And… that’s exactly what happened! For a while anyway. 90 copies sold the first week (just who were the 45 people we didn’t know who had bought it knowing nothing about the contents?), and a steady trickle after that, as we drove around in our van playing such illustrious gigs as opening up for a screening of “Rollerball”, playing an actual battle of the bands (and not winning), and playing for less than 0 paying customers (it’s unclear how we got to “-2 sold”, but that’s what the promoter said…)
Finally, after a few months, 107 The End in Seattle started playing “Undone”. Before that only a handful of college stations were even dabbling with the record. Things escalated quickly after that. KROQ Los Angeles added Undone, Undone got a video which MTV played, opening for Lush, lines of kids at the shows, switching from van to bus to keep up with the schedule, opening for Live, Buddy Holly video… and so on - and on, and on!
What else is there to say but thank you for the decades of love and support from all the fans, colleagues, friends and family?
Well, there is something else to say, in fact!
The Blue Album was Weezer‘s first album of course, but it wasn’t their first attempt at making an album. Check out this recording of "My Name Is Jonas" from what became known as "The Kitchen Tape", recorded in the summer of 1992 at our home/rehearsal space in West LA. Most of the self produced Kitchen Tape songs have never been officially released, including this song. Happy 30th birthday to the Blue Album! Congrats Weezer people. I clearly remember driving to Belgium in ‘94 for holidays with my wife and 1 year old daughter and Undone coming on the radio. I made my wife write down title and band. Back in Holland i immediately bought the album. It took 25 years or so to finally see them live in Amsterdam, together with my daughter. It’s crazy and awesome how Weezer has always - sometimes less, sometimes more - been part of our lives. Love you! (Also Mykel and Carli 🥲)

Absolute favorite album of all-time. I had only heard Undone when I bought the CD and from the first track it was exceptional. I fell in love and have been following ever since 1994. Happy Birthday, Blue Album! At release time I just called it self-titled as I had no idea color was going to be such a prominent differentiator.

I distinctly remember the first time I heard Undone on the radio when I was 14. It caught my attention. After that, I always waited to hear it come on again. Soon Surf Wax America and Say It Ain't So started playing too, and I was hooked. The Blue Album was one of the first CDs I ever bought and I've never looked back. Through all the Weezer songs and albums I've loved since then, The Blue Album still brings back some really great feelings every single time I listen to it. Thank you, Weezer.

i believe I bought a "Radio Promo" cd from a record store in a basement in Omaha right before or right after it came out. Cost me $2. And i only bought it cuz i saw in the liner notes, (that I read as it was unwrapped and open) that they recorded at Electric Lady Studios in NYC. Being a big Hendrix fan, I thought I could take a chance with my 2 bucks. Couldn't believe how amazing it was. I forced anyone who would listen to borrow it. Made quite a few fans before the Undone video came out - In Omaha, anyway. thank you guys for the music. lifelong fan here.

Holy smoke! This may seem sacrilege to some, but I just about prefer this early run-through of "Jonas" to the relatively more polished studio version that opens up the Blue album proper. To my ears anyway, it possesses a rawness that almost foreshadows what was to come later with "Pinkerton". Hoping More of the Kitchen Tape sessions will be included with the Super Deluxe 30th anniversary edition once its done and ready to drop!
