The snare does not sound like that because this is a demo. That is the drum tone Patrick Wilson most likely wanted for this song. A lot of drummers dig that snare tone. It's tuned high and has no muting on it, and the wire is choked against the resonant head. He's hitting the drum quite hard, possibly using thicker sticks, making the snare wire almost nonexistent. Lars Ulrich did something similar on St. Anger, however his snare was tuned poorly, creating a sort of trash bin-like sound with lots of overtones (I don't know if that was on purpose or not). Producers change music pieces to appeal to a wider demographic, which is most liikely why the drum tone was changed. The album features a lower tuned snare with the wire a bit more loose, along with some muting to give it that punchy, pop drum sound.

The most interesting thing to me is how different Rivers' voice sounds. You can tell it's him especially in the quieter parts, but he almost has a metal or grunge (Chris Cornell) sound for most of it. It's interesting that he went with more of a "slacker" style (for lack of a better word) on their official releases. Just goes to show how versatile and talented he is as a singer.

I just discovered this. Pretty cool, interesting. I think this version demonstrates what rivers has said in interviews that I have read that he is actually much more of a guitar player and soloist than what he shows on the first few albums. I am only familiar with the first 3 albums. He certainly shows his rock guitar skills much more on this version and his singing is a bit different. I think for whatever reason they decided to go with a cleaner and more simpler sound for the album. Guitar solos that are more melodic as opposed to bluesy rock licks, and cleaner vocal delivery with no yelling / screaming vocal break up. This version is cool to hear for the contrast.

Should check out their 4th album maladroit, it’s very raw sounding production wise like Pinkerton and definitely shows off his guitar playing more than the first three.

The producers who took this and turned it into the album version did an amazing job cleaning it all up. From the vocals to the guitar, they turned the distortion down on nearly all of it, and it worked perfectly. When this was out, to me, they were closer to the beach Boys, but a modern version. This sounds more like the other bands of the 90's, which is understandable, but the changes made Weezer stand out far more, gave them a more solid identity.

L0Kii Blue's baselines were all excellent because they were all written by Matt. Pretty sure most of Pinkerton's weren't. They are not as good because Rivers took control of the band and he wrote Pinkerton on his own without allowing the input of the rest of the band, which in my opinion, made Pinkerton's baselines and the composition in general not as good as Blue's.
