Yeah Nirvana was a heavy influence, and I dig that. Rivers has his own unique voice though.
@pedromaiz884 жыл бұрын
haha definitely... i remember reading an interview with Rivers. He mentioned that it took him a while to realize that he didn't have to sound like some kind of tough ass to sing in a rock band. Something along the lines of "I didn't know I could just sing with my regular voice, like I used to in the high school choir."

If my Weezer history serves correctly, this is from Weezer's third demo, often referred to as "The Real Demo". It was recorded at a converted garage in Hollywood "borrowed" by the band. At the time (Nov '92) this was considered the best-yet representation of the band despite the snares sound like what Karl describes as a tennis ball hitting a racket. I can't remember for the life of me what it was exactly recorded onto though.
@pedromaiz884 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that hearing a demo of this song is what convinced matt sharpe to move back down to LA and commit himself to playing in a band with Rivers. Do you think this was the version that he had heard? Or was this probably the version that they sent to Ric Ocasek (producer of the Blue album)?
@jamezz413 жыл бұрын
@@pedromaiz88 This isn't the recording that convinced matt sharp to move to L.A. That move happened in March 1992. This track IS the third demo of this song; recorded in november of the same year (as said above) and was the version that they considered the best and sent around to labels. There was a second version recorded that is on the kitchen tapes that was recorded in the bands rehersal space (a garage) in august 1992

far too metal. I think No one else also used to have more intense shredding compared to the blue album version.The decision may have been an attempt to just not include gnarly solos on their album. Although Rivers originally wrote technical and well-played solos, they are pretty cheesy, to be frank. Like, 80s hair metal status. Although Rivers was a big metalhead before he started weezer, he was really trying to get away from that. By the time they recorded Blue, metal was deader than dead. It was a joke.
@BurnedZero7 жыл бұрын
Quite interesting. This is the third version of this song I listen to. The another one is from "opposite sides of the good old fence" which I think is highly epic cuz it sounds sadder and not so grungy... Then I hear this which is also fantastic, that solo adds a lot of power. I don't understand what Rivers was thinking when he applied all those changes till the final version, but I must admit I love them all.

There's an ambiguity at the heart of this song.Teen angst, or something more? Why did the girl, whoever he's singing about, disappear? The line "wallet photograph" can easily be heard as "wanted photograph" suggesting a darker context. The contrast between the plucked acoustic and thrashed electric guitar emphasizes the duality. This is why the early Weezer was great.
@usernamehere62593 жыл бұрын
Think of this song as a continuation of the story in "No one else" the previous song on the album. Because he was paranoid and jealous that someone would take his girl, he became controlling and this song is the aftermath of the breakup

Rivers does something strange with his voice on these demos and other early Weezer recordings that I've not heard him do since, that Cobain-like push rendering the tone a bit gravely. I wonder if Ric Ocasek encouraged him to avoid doing this with his voice.
