I'm a forest manager by profession here in the UK, and have already sown, grown to sapling stage and planted out P. elongata and P x shontang with Euclyptus nitens etc in lowland Cornwall. Seeds mainly from Romania. Doing nicely, will be monitoring, and we may get some timber to turn to Cornish surfboards! They need protection from deer browsing in the establishment stage. Paulownia are also N fixing, so good on reclamation /former mining sites. As for weeding, that is only required during the establishment phase, totally pointless beyond that and a waste of time and money, plus decreases biodiversity (bad forestry practice). We don't want serried ranks of trees in rows with no understorey or ground layer, it is called tree farming at its worst.

Kernow Forester Hi. Thanks for charing your practical experience and your personal opinion on growing Paulownia with us! We completely agree with you that a high level of biodiversity is important to all of us. But please consider that we at WeGrow only set up Paulownia plantations if we - in the same step - increase the biological value of the piece of land. To all of you: Please do never cut down a primary or secondary forest to set up a Paulownia plantation. If you grow Paulownia on fallow or agricultural land, you always do something good to us and our next generations! WeGrow, Germany

@@kernowforester811 hello Kernow Forester, I am thinking that Paulownia is a great solution for reforestation of a destroyed primary forest. Normaly pioneer specimens such as betula, salix or poplar are the first to establish a new forest. On bare or gras land we find a harsh climate where most forest trees cannot thrive. Thats where the paulownia could make a chance. If we would plant a diversity of pioneer trees along with up to 30% Paulownia we could sow forest trees underneath them after 6 years. In that timescale the ground is shaded enough that fagus, abies and others could thrive and replace the pioneer forrest in the future.
@kernowforester811

@@Timausdenardennen Yes Paulownia spp are in effect a pioneer species, and importantly is nitrogen fixing. That means it especially is useful on reclamation sites. Here in the UK, we already have a useful nitrogen fixing species, Alnus glutinosa (common alder) and related and imported exotic Italian and Red alder.

@@kernowforester811 so ahead of our time to migrate some specimens that are more resistant to drought. We here in germany have limited posibilities due to our forest laws that restrict the use of foreign trees. But we do some trials in order to keep the softwood in our forest. We did the mistake to transform the natural forest into plantations of Picea abies and pinus sylvestris. Now we face the consequences of our mistakes we already do scince the 1700... the beetle kills the picea, the drought and mushroom kills the pinus... also the system of planting and harvesting of a whole forest appears to be a major risk of unsuccessful forestry and low grade timber. Last year we had a drought saison from the end of March till September, now we try cedrus libani, cedrus atlantica and pinus ponderosa as substitute for our vulnerable native pines. Further we observate that the bucks (fagus) beginn to die from the drought on some places which concerns already the public. Climate change calls for some foreign trees that are used to these new conditions to mix with the native species. To get rid of the risky one age and class forest types we begin to rebuild to the Permaforest model where we have mixed specimens and all mixed age classes to keep the forest in its optimum stage of growth with a yearly growth rate of over 30m³ per 10000m². More than every other monoculture could ever yield.

😀 Nice video on the growing process. It's good to see the production of Paulownia taken so seriously. In the early 2000's people in the US were haphazardly dropping seeds into the ground and expecting a gold mine of grade lumber in 10-15 years. Just because it grows fast doesn't mean it's easy to bring to market! This specie hold so much potential. I'm glad to see the seeds and production methods refined.

this tree got caught in a hype train about 10 years ago. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. yes, it grows fast, the bloom lasts for a month, it smells lovely but it can spread quickly and take over, so don't plant it anywhere near your house. the wood may be light and easy to work with but it isn't long lasting. i think it's good for poor soils where it will grow more slowly but it can nutrients from deep down in the ground and get the good stuff out and into the leaves which you can use as compost. but because it grows quickly the leaves decompose quickly, so even the leaves are nowhere near as good as leaves from an oak which decomposes for 5 years or so. you can claim grassland quickly by planting this tree and in this way create a good environment for the "real" trees like beech and oak to establish in the shadow of the paulownia. other than that i see no use for it. of course, when a company invests a ton of money in one thing, they will only show you the upsides and try to sell sell sell in order not to lose money.

I have some on my property here in the USA south. It's a bit messy, but good quick shade. My late father didn't like it because of its property of being resistant to rot and decay. You cut down a pine tree, its stump and root decays; you cut down the paulownia and it sprouts from the stump or just remains in the ground and doesn't go away. That's a problem for some people. I find it hard to burn also.

What about the consumption of water of the tree to grow? and what happen to the soil after you cut the tree and the pH? is able to reforest in the same area or not?
@wegrow4653
@wegrow4653 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Miguel. Kiri Trees show a very high relative water use efficiency and 3-4 years after planting also a very high drought resistance. But of cause, the more water available (by natural rainfall or irrigation), the faster the growth. This is just the law of photosynthesis. The trees you usually plant once and then harvest 2-3 times as the trees regrow from the stump/roots. A professional fertilizer managment makes sure you keep the pH and increase soil organic matter and soil fertility.

The time when to apply fertilizer, what kind and relation of nutrients in the fertilizer and how to apply it depends on many individual factors of your growing site. In Germany for example, this time of year we do not apply any more fertilizer, as we do not use irrigation and fertigation. In Spain, where the growing season is much longer and we use drip irrigation on all fields, we even fertilize till middle of september. For our farming partners we offer free of charge consultancy. Eduardo França Porto Hi Eduardo. For many years we are thinking about expanding with our sustainable Paulownia timber production to Brazil. Paulownia has a much higher ecological value then Pine or Eucalyptus. The potential is high in the regions with sufficient rainfall. This saves the high costs of irrigation. For cooperation please contact us under info@wegrow.de

You have your own native tree species in Brazil, you dont need another invasive Species to grow. Here in Austria the Kiri tree (Blauglockenbaum) becomes an invasive weed. And here we have cold climate here.

I would like to know if you sell Pawlonia seeds, here in Chile I have bought seeds but they are of very low germination, almost to say null, or failing that sale of already germinated plants. I consider Pawlonia very important for what it represents in the future. Please answer me.

How much time does it take for the tree to grow ?
@wegrow4653
@wegrow4653 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. This depends very much on the variety you are using, the climate and of cause on the degree of professionality of the maintenance. There are plantations that can but cut after only 5 years with stem diameters of around 30cm. In colder climate and on land with no irrigation the harvest cycle can reach also 10-12 years with stems of 40-45cm.

Replacement and repair damages of "very bad eucaliptus" and introduced pines that use a lot of water, kill the soil, turn acid the soil, even the grass not survive, rain wash away the soil, also make severe wildfires that jump fire pieces more than 500 meters away; here in Chile have a lot of these eucaliptus problems... Paulonia its different grow very well in dead land that no ther survive, repair the soil, turn fertile, grass growing abundant, use little water, grass fill the water under the soil, the farm amimal can eat the leaves, video show tilled the grass, maybe can grow other cultive under that not need to much sun or temperature, maybe barley, legume, some fruits, berries, potato, etc.. more space for the plow and sun; exsist other CLON variety of Paulonia 30% more harder than pine wood with same time of grow, need little water just in summer the first two years... Chinese clones, also Mexico have same; diferent clones for diferent weather... desert, mediterranean, rain, ice, etc.. if improve more in the future... REPAIR TREE.
