Very good, well delivered video. I like 👍 flying these types of short, easy, cross country flights. They keep me on my toes watching for the next landmark and spotting airports along the way.

Thanks Steve glad you liked it and thanks for watching. By the way, if you didn't know and are interested, X-Hanger has given me the rights to their Cessna 172N for X Plane 11, the airplane I use in most of my videos, and have allowed me to give it away to anyone who would like to use it for following along in my videos. at 18:00 I guess you should have drawn the line from Red Bluff to the Rest Plant, instead of the other way around. Then instead you would have a radial of 327 degrees instead of 147? Looking forward to the follow up video on VFR Flight Planning.

Thanks again for these videos. I always wondered why I couldn't just fly point to point. And as you said just going by VOR gets a little too boring. In the first waypoint example would you just use the waypoint BEIRA instead of creating a new one?
@WEHVideos10 ай бұрын
Hi medwaystudios, Nice to hear from you again :-) Yes you could use the BEIRA waypoint but you can't see it. With this type of VFR flying you are not using autopilot or GPS you are flying manually and going strictly off visual ground references. We use the VOR in case we get lost and as a double check but don't want to rely on it for flying the route. In my opinion it's best to be able to know exactly where you are by looking out the windows. In real life VFR flying you would probably be flying the same routes over and over and should become familiar with the terrain and have many ground references you always look for especially places you might be able to land in an emergency. Again this is just me but I like flying manually trying to maintain altitude, heading, and speed and try to see if I can match my flight plan calculations. It's just a lot more fun in the simulator otherwise, like I said in the video, using AP in the sim is like watching TV. You might like my series on the Navigation Log where you create a flight plan then try it out and see how it works. Here is a link to the 5 part series if you are interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWWYpXdrq9aJl6M If you don't want to create a Nav Log or do the math I have made a digital Navigation Log you can download. @@WEHVideos Thanks for the explanation Skip. I shouldn't have made the comment until I watched the next video where I see you didn't have a GPS at all so makes sense to not use a predefined waypoint since there would be no advantage of that. Agree doing it manually seems more fun so far. I'll watch those nav log videos too. I just got the AFL C172 Analog and about to take it for this demo flight you setup first :)

Newbie here! Great video but, one question... when you went from the Plant waypoint to the rest area waypoint. You cross through the red dotted E class airspace... is that ok to do? Also can you fly through the delta airspace below the min altitude and be fine?
@WEHVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi ShaneKay, Thanks and welcome to the wonderful world of sim flying :-) Yes it's OK to enter Class Echo airspace if the weather conditions are right. There are different weather minimums in Class E air space as compared to Class G when flying VFR. As a rule Class Delta airspace goes up from the surface so there's not much chance of going below but you can go over class D airspace. Below is a link to a pretty good video (not mine) on Class Echo airspace that might help you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3vGn4avZ6qJjcU Let me know if this helps . Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos thanks so much for the reply! It does make sense and thanks for the video link that helped as well! Great video. Now I understand how the traffic pattern works. For instance, in this video, all Runway 13 L and 13 R have right-hand traffic and 31 L and 31 R have left-hand traffic. which means traffic pattern is only one side of the airport. (Perhaps facing east?) Am I correct?
@WEHVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarath, Traffic patters are in reference to a particular runway not the airport. Some airports have crossing runways and there is a pattern for each runway. As I mentioned earlier, Left traffic is preferred because the pilot (in the left seat) can see the runway much better out the left window than that looking out the right window for the runway. There are other uses for traffic patterns also. If you are at a towered airport they might use both left and right pattern for a runway at the same time and the tower will direct you to the one he/she wants you to use. They do this at Redding Muni in Redding CA. when instructors with student pilots want to stay in the pattern to practice takeoff and landing, most often they will use Right traffic pattern for practice so they don't interfere with flights coming in or leaving the airport, they will use Left traffic. So when thinking of patterns it's for the runway not a side of the airport and they select the patterns to use based on a variety of conditions. At non-towered airports these patterns don't change but a towered airport may change the pattern when the controller deems it necessary. Hope this helps. Blessings, skip

Hi Jeppe, I'm sorry but I don't have an 'in depth" video on sectional charts, which SkyVector.com is but I touch on the basics in this video: kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=qoGHzQWbsXs There are many videos on KZbin explaining charts so if you need help right away search KZbin for reading sectional charts. Basically the Legends explain the symbols on the chart and are "somewhat" self explanatory. If you have any question let me know, however, I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but I will do my best to help. With that said I will work on a video just on SkyVector some time in the future. Hope this helps some. Blessings, skip

Very helpful tutorial! Clear and understandable explanation. Speaking for myself, I used from day one to simulate flights only with modern instruments (Garmin.. FMC..) and I wondered if one of this instruments will fail, if I will be forced to use VOR flight rules..... (I thought always that this kind of flight navigation belong to the past) What is your opinion?
@WEHVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi ilankrt, While GPS systems have made it easy in many respects it has taken the "skill" out of flying. I much prefer to be in control and fly manually for the short flights I take. The airplane I fly does not have autopilot, it has the NAV radios but no AP. In the next video, where we will fly this flight plan, it will be done manually. It will be necessary for me to maintain altitude, heading, and speed along with checking my position, knowing where I am at all times, this is me flying not the airplane flying for me. Anyone can take off, turn on the AP and sit back and do nothing and in a simulator this gets old very fast, as I mentioned in the video this is nothing more than watching TV so I hope you will give this flight a try. Blessings, skip
@ilankrt5 жыл бұрын
@@WEHVideos There are three alternatives. One to fly IFR, second to fly VFR (flightplan, radio nav) and third to fly VFR with GPS (I use to do with small aircraft). I was watching a lot of videos about small aircraft crash. Most of this aircraft were equipped only with nav radio. Although the pilots had some hundred of flight hours, getting into bad weather conditions they lost control over direction and knowledge about their position. In fact I cannot imagine a stressed pilot struggling to control aircraft and at the same time making calculation in such a dangerous situations based on nav radio... I don't think that in the real flight world we can renounce modern, much safer and accurate navigation systems.
@WEHVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi ilankrt, You are absolutely right, we can not renounce modern aviation systems! For the short flights that I do flying IFR makes no sense and the VFR flying I do is only in perfect weather conditions where there is no possibility of flying into bad weather. With that said my comments in the video for flying VFR are for simulator pilots. However the skills I mention are required before you can get a real private pilot certificate, you must prove you can navigate and know your position on your flight plan and if you get lost be able to find your position. I think you can get into just a much trouble either way, most accidents are pilot error so the pilot must always have constant situation awareness, if equipment fails he/she needs to be prepared and react quickly. Sorry if you thought I was renouncing all the modern equipment they are really nice making flying easier. This also can cause a pilot to get "lazy" relying too much on technology and when things go bad, well they just might not be prepared, again pilot error. Blessings, skip
