At last a clear explanation of this crucial instrument. Too bad that so many are confusing.

I've noticed other videos show the moving triangle on the bank scale moving in the OPPOSITE direction of the actual turn. Please explain. Thanks

Hi Dan, the attitude indicator's moving part indicates the relationship of the wings of the airplane to the horizon. While there are different looks to the attitude indicator the work the same. On one there is a upside triangle at the top which indicates Zero degrees roll when the "triangle" pointing up is directly underneath it. When you make a left turn the lower "triangle" will appear to move to the left as the turn angle increases indicating the left turn angle but is doesn't, it's the artificial horizon portion of the attitude indicator that moves and in a left turn that "triangle" will move to the right and the opposite is true for a right turn. If you look straight ahead in a turn the horizon will appear to be at an angle and looking at the attitude indicator it will look the same, the artificial horizon matches what you see outside. It might be easier to visualize if there were only degrees of turn without an upside triangle indicating zero degrees of turn. Hope this answers your question if not please let me know which airplanes you are flying where they don't work the same. Blessings, skip

A quick question. I have a new computer I bought before my interest in flight sim. It has an i5-7400 cpu/8 megs of ram, and Intel integrated graphics. Will this be enough to enjoy X plane 11 using a simple rudder or flight stick set up? Thanks.

Hi Dan, 20 frames per second is the lowest you would ever want, anything above 30fps should be pretty good but the higher the better. Your specs are good not great so play with setup options to find the best frame rate and graphics you can live with. You might want to search for videos on XP setup they can really help. Thanks skip. As I got it, The elevator (by Yoke) is the main means for change in altitude and Trim tab is the main means to maintain a strait flight. But I don't know the things are not in order. May be I am not enough familiar with the Flight Simulator X

Hi jamshid, The trim is used in level flight after you have leveled off if that make sense. Once you are established in level flight then you use the trim to "fine tune". The idea is if you had to keep pulling the yoke back and hold it in a particular position to maintain level flight you would go crazy and it would be almost impossible. So you make small adjustment with the trim until there is no need to hold the yoke in a position and then make little adjustment as needed. Basically you are removing the pressure on the yoke. The same is true for climbing. When you pull back on the yoke to establish a climb it's very hard to hold the yoke in the position you need to maintain a constant climb rate, say 500fpm. So once you establish your 500fpm climb rate you use the trim wheel to "remove" the pressure from the yoke. You will notice as you trim you don't have to pull the yoke back as far, the more you trim the more you can release the yoke to finally a neutral position where you don't need the yoke at all to maintain the climb. You just trimmed the airplane for a climb and only need small trim adjustments as needed without using the yoke. Hope this helps, let me know. Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos First, thanks so much for the videos! My 12 year old son and I are using them to learn the basics of flying in XP11. I have a few questions. First, you talk about trimming on ascent after take-off to maintain around 80 knots. As you are adjusting the trim, how much are you using the yoke to control the elevator? Are you initially using the yoke to find the attitude necessary to maintain that speed, and then trimming until your yoke pressure is relieved? Or are you not using the yoke at all for elevator control at that time, and just adjusting the trim? Second, similar to the first, what are you doing with the yoke when you are trimming for level flight? Are you using the yoke to get to level flight at a certain speed, and then adjusting the trim? Or is there some other order of actions?

@@WEHVideos I just watched the video again. I think you basically answered my questions, though I would welcome any further clarification!

Hi Derrick, Trimming is mostly used to take the pressure off the yoke so you don't need to hold it in place. You first set the trim for takeoff before taking off then use the yoke "as necessary" till you get the airplane trimmed so you don't need pressure on the yoke. There are no set rules, it can be hit and miss and take a little while till you get it right. After liftoff and I'm in a pretty steady climb I'll start releasing what pressure I had on the yoke and see what happens. If I'm just a little off on the climb out I would just use the trim to see how that works, if I'm not climbing fast enough then I use the yoke a bit and trim for that new setting. When trimming in level flight (assuming you have "been" in level flight) I'd just make very small adjustments with the trim and give it plenty of time to settle out only using the yoke if I'm struggling with staying in level flight then re-trim. It's important to let the airplane "settle in". The airplane will eventually find it's "sweet spot" and if conditions are right you won't have to trim for some time. If you constantly are making adjustments that's how your whole flight will go, always adjusting. To see this work pick a flight over water so you have a very even temp coming up from below and set the weather manually removing all winds and turbulence, get a perfectly calm day. Now trim the airplane as best you can then don't trim again just let the airplane fly itself. The airplane will oscillate for a while the settle out. Be sure to give it time! You will see the speed increase and decrease slightly and the airplane will climb a bit then descend a bit but the oscillations will get smaller and smaller and finally disappear. Hope this helps please let me know how it worked for you and your son :-) Blessings, skip

Thanks Skip for this video again. I hear you regularly check your trim before take off. How do you know the trim is level for take off?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cyril, In the Cessna 172 (and probably all airplanes) next to the trim wheel is an position indicator. As you turn the trim wheel you line up the position indicator with a mark labeled takeoff (usually in the center of the indicators travel range). When the trim is set to "takeoff" you are ready to go, it will always be the same place for takeoff. My guess is that when set for takeoff the trim has NO effect, it is in a neutral position on the elevator. While looking at the trim wheel operate the wheel and look for the indicator to move up or down as you turn the wheel, center position is the takeoff position. Let me know if this answers your question. Blessings, skip

Great. Thanks a lot. I have been flying 4 hours (with a real plane) already and never realised that since the trim is stuck between the 2 seats (i fly a piper warrior). Really appreciate your answer

@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 4 жыл бұрын
Hi johny, You can get the instruments here: www.siminnovations.com or here:www.simplugins.com/html/panel_builder.html These are for building additional panels on a second monitor. They both are pretty good however this new version of Air Manager I think is a better choice with more instruments. With that each has something the other doesn't so if you are going to get one I suggest you watch a couple videos on youtube to help you choose. Priced around $59-$79 depending on what you want. Air Manager offers a free demo version to try. Hope this helps, thanks for watching. Blessings, skip

How did you get the trim pop up window?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 7 жыл бұрын
Hi nelladan2001, I have a instrument program, Panel Builder, that I sometimes use on a 4th monitor. There are two companies I know of that have instruments you can use on a separate monitor to build a complete custom instrument panel. You can NOT use them on a one monitor system because the instrument stays in the place you put it. So if I had done any scrolling or looking to the left or right in this video that trim indicator would be in the same place on the monitor. Panel Builder you can get here: simplugins.com/index.html and Air Manager: www.siminnovations.com/software/air-manager/about-air-manager Thanks for watching. Blessings, skip
