Completely agree! My tribute to Wei Yan. Wei Yan remind me of Han Xin. Both men got slander and killed. Both men was undefeated in battle. Both men had their family killed by the Han kingdom. Imagine if he didn't die. I think Zhuge liang was jealous of Wei Yan accomplishments. Wei Yan was trusted by Liu bei. Wei Yan serve every campaigns without a single defeat and scored big. While Zhuge liang was sitting on his ass the whole time. We tend to forget Zhuge Liang returned to Shu in a casket as his body rot away after losing to Sima Yi. To further show proof that Zhuge Liang was incompetent, I made a small list. ZL gave all his troop to an inexperienced bookworm call Ma Su. He end up gettin routed and slaughtered instead of the undefeated and veteran Wei Yan to lead the army. ZL successor Jiang Wei depleted Shu supplies and took down Wei Yan double gate defense. He basically letting Dang Ai to enter Shu capital without much resistance. Even in death, Wei Yan helped defends Shu. That's unyielding loyalty. About them double gates. Wei Yan borrowed the concept of "double gates" from the ancient text I Ching and laid numerous camps along the outskirt and trail exits linking to Hanzhong. His defence mechanism was very effective in driving the enemy out, and his arrangement was adopted by those succeeded him as the defender of Hanzhong. Traitor? He's not done yet, prior to Shu surrendering, Jiang Wei blunter cause Zhuge Liang only son to be violently killed by Dang AI by men. Zhuge Liang son was adored in Shu, every time he wore his father robe, he looks like his old man. I bet a lot of rotk fans never heard of ZL son or how he dies right? We only remember was his fictional feats. He suspected him of being treasonous, even though he recruited a Jiang Wei right from Wei and named his his successor. Not only that, but Wu needing I think Jing province back so badly stunted his ability to move without being predictable, which is partially why Sima had such an easy time with him. -CanWeGoBackRIPhiphop Zhuge Liang rejecting Wei yan plan to attack Chang An was stupid, they could have sack chang an the capital of wei with his plan to rush with 10 k elite army. -kim sejeong Honorable mention Wei Yan probably participated in most, if not all, of the five Shu invasions of Wei between 228 and 234. In 230, Wei Yan attacked and defeated the Wei generals Fei Yao and Guo Huai at Yangxi (陽谿; southwest of present-day Wushan County, Gansu). During the fourth campaign in 231, he also joined the Shu generals Gao Xiang and Wu Ban in resisting the main Wei army led by Sima Yi and scored a major victory over the enemy: they killed 3,000 Wei soldiers and seized 5,000 sets of armour and 3,100 crossbows. Sima Yi retreated back to his camp. As a reward for his contributions, the Shu government promoted Wei Yan to Vanguard Military Adviser (前軍師) and Senior General Who Attacks the West (征西大將軍), and elevated him from a village marquis to a county marquis under the title "Marquis of Nanzheng" (南鄭侯). Ziwu Valley Plan Edit Every time Wei Yan followed Zhuge Liang to battle, he requested to lead a separate detachment of 10,000 troops, take a different route and rendezvous with the Shu main army at Tong Pass (潼關; in present-day Tongguan County, Shaanxi). This was based on an earlier strategy used by the general Han Xin in the 200s BCE. Zhuge Liang rejected the plan because he thought that it was too risky. Wei Yan saw Zhuge Liang as a coward and complained that his talent was not put to good use. When Chen Shou compiled the unofficial works on the history of Shu to write the Sanguozhi, he only mentioned that Wei Yan suggested to Zhuge Liang to split the Shu army into two, and the two forces would take two different routes and rendezvous at Tong Pass. Wei Yan's reasoning for his Ziwu Valley Plan was recorded in the Weilüe, which was then added as an annotation to his biography in the Sanguozhi. It stated: "Wei Yan received intelligence that the defender of the strategic city Chang'an, Xiahou Mao, was cowardly and incompetent. Thus, he reasoned, it would be easy for him to take 5,000 troops (and another 5,000 to carry supplies) across the Qin Mountains via the Ziwu Valley (子午谷) and into Chang'an. Wei Yan estimated that he would reach Chang'an in ten days and scare Xiahou Mao into flight, leaving the grain in Chang'an's storehouses for Shu's taking. There, Wei Yan's force can wait for Zhuge Liang's main army to take the safer road out of Xie Valley (斜谷) and rendezvous in Chang'an. In this way, the region west of Xianyang could be conquered in one movement." When the Wei government received intelligence about Wei Yan's Ziwu Valley Plan, the Wei emperor Cao Rui immediately removed Xiahou Mao from his military command in Chang'an and reassigned him to be a Master of Writing (尚書) in Luoyang. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wei_Yan

This is a really important decision from Wei Yan, particularly in terms of food supply when marching from Shu to Wei territory. It's a logistics nightmare. This included taxing the population to pay for military expenses such as conscription and general's monthly costs. The population has to ration their food, so the soldiers can eat. The bigger the army, the bigger the provision the civilians have to sacrifice. Withdrawing because of one man's death insults all those soldiers who have died on the battlefield. Have you figured out why he chooses to do that? Wei Yan always thinks ahead strategically. (One of the most memorable victories was going behind the enemy line, made a deal with the Qiang on Wei territory, and proceeding to crush Guo Huai's army to lift the siege at Mount Qi. Zhuge Liang was saved). Badass special operation. If I have to guess, he thought he was free to use his military talents without restraint. Continue Liu Bei's campaign to subjugate the North, but he never expect his people, particularly his brother in arms that fought beside him through thick and thin would harm him. Once they withdraw, they missed their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As you all know, Jiang Wei tries his hardest to continue the northern campaign, exhausting Shu's supplies and men's power. He was so desperate, he try baiting the enemies to take Shu Capitol after removing Wei Yan's Double Gates defense. Got Zhuge Liang son killed, got himself killed, and made Liu Bei's son surrender. Gg Update Zhuge Liang's order to withdraw before his death is to prevent someone from scoring any victories as he lies dead. Ma Dai was his backup plan. ZL was fully aware of Wei Yan's talents when he worked together with the Qiang Tribes, crushed Guo Huai's army, and saved him at Mount Qi. He probably hope Ma Su was that good when he choose him for the Battle of Jieting. As you all know, it ended in disaster, just like Jiang Wei; Zhuge Liang #2 protégé. When Jiang Wei removed Wei Yan Double Gates before losing to Deng Ai, it really show Wei Yan’s overall immense talents.

Wei Yan's intentions were primarily motivated by his personal grudges with Yang Yi and ambitions. He was not treacherous and had no intentions of rebelling. Had he rebelled he would have marched his army north as opposed to returning to Hanzhong. He had hoped to be Zhuge Liang's successor because up to that point, his achievements and merits far surpassed those of Fei Yi, Yang Yi, and Jiang Wan. Historically, Zhuge Liang respected Yan's valor and always gave him important tasks while in battle. Their disagreement stemmed from their personalities. Liang was meticulous and cautious, never really taking risks while Yan was bold, daring, and risky. Even if Zhuge Liang gave Wei Yan 5,000 veteran troops to attach Changan through the Ziwu valley, Wei Yan would not have been able to capture the city. First Cao Rui had already marched a large amount of troops into Changan to defend it. Secondly, even if Wei Yan managed to overtake Changan, reinforcements from Louyang would have pushed him out of Changan due to limited munitions and supplies. Finally, under the rule of Wei, the citizens of Changan were treated properly and were happy for many years in the absent of war. Even if Wei Yan managed to enter the city, he would not have won the heart of the people and definitely would not have been able to hold the city against rebels while waiting for Zhuge Liang to come with aid.

this is what i think the situation was: (correct me if some of these historic facts r wrong) wei yan loyally followed liu bei and helped him to achieve victories, zhuge liang though did not trust wei yan for disobeying a couple of orders. this led to zhuge liang treating wei yan with little respect while liu bei thought wei yan was a fine soldier. the disrespect from zhuge liang over the years began to get to wei yan so once zhuge liang died wei yan let out his frustrations by rebelling against shu, leading to his death. thats why im on wei yans side, thats why wei yan is my favorite warrior in the three kingdoms and in dynasty warriors, because of his personality and backstory

Hello, I have a question. Regarding Wei Yan killing his lord Han Xuan. I realize now that incident was from a novel perspective. Historically Han Xuan surrender to Liu Bei peacefully, along with Wei Yan. My question is, why did the novel fabricated such a lie? This make me wonder about the incident where Wei Yan destroying the bridge after Zhuge Liang death, was that from the novel too? Did they fabricated that story to justified killing off Wei Yan and his whole family? Someone must have set him up so he never can return to Shu? I mean why would Wei Yan put himself in a disadvantage position? That's like a treason move. I read about Wei Yan bio on Wikipedia and the last words "Injustice of Wei Yan" stuck with me since. I try look all over the web for the answer , but I couldn't find the real reason for his death. Honorable mention Zhuge's thought process was probably, "My political opponents won't gain any merit, but my protégé Ma Su will gain experience and glory in one fell swoop and we will be successful in our campaign. It's a win-win-win with high probability." -PreeminentEnigma "Zhuge Liang tried his hardest to hold Wei Yan back, perhaps fearing that Wei Yan would become a serious political rival if he was too successful. On the one occasion where Wei Yan was left to his own devices, he went behind enemy lines, successfully allied with foreign elements, and then absolutely crushed Guo Huai" -archlich Wei Yan was one of very few generals who defeated Guo Huai in a battle. Yangxi was very far away from Shu Han territory. Wei Yan’s ability to lead his troop there and defeated a formidable foe was a testament of his talent -hcw731 Wei Yan's bio also mentions that Shu was in fact in a highly advantageous position, which was why it was so galling for him to accept the retreat order. Looking at the Wei sources, it looks like Shu was comically incompetent, but the nature of these bios are to highlight what each person did right in their life. -vnth93 Wei Yan probably participated in most, if not all, of the five Shu invasions of Wei between 228 and 234. In 230, Wei Yan attacked and defeated the Wei generals Fei Yao and Guo Huai at Yangxi (陽谿; southwest of present-day Wushan County, Gansu). The works of the novel is pretty much biased towards Zhuge Liang so of course it'd justify anything that Zhuge Liang did. Imagine a Stalin biography written by a communist. The novel basically is like that. While in fact Zhuge Liang simply never liked Wei Yan for some reasons and saw him as his biggest obstacle to rule Shu (because in reality Wei Yan is actually pretty damn smart, he's about as smart as Sima Yi), so they depicted Wei Yan as "traitor" to justify Zhuge Liang personal agenda against him.

My tribute to Wei Yan. The disturbing the ritual and other allegations against Wei Yan was all part of a plot to undermine his achievements and this justified to killed his whole family in cold-blooded. An illustration of Wei Yan from a Qing dynasty edition of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It shows Wei Yan (far left) trapping Sima Yi and his sons in Shangfang Valley (上方谷) during one of the Northern Expeditions. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wei_Yan#/media/File%3AWei_Yan_traps_Sima_Yi_and_his_sons.jpg Jiang Wei on the other hand makes it easy for the enemy. Google search for Injustices for Wei Yan to read more about his rise and fall. www.quora.com/The-Three-Kingdoms-Period-in-Ancient-China-Why-wasnt-Wei-Yan-listed-as-one-of-the-Five-Tiger-Generals A few of his failures were because of his not trusting Wei Yan.
