Remember watching these videos as a kid when they were brand new. I am now actually currently in school for obtaining my CDL (class A), as I have a plan on going into the truck driving field. Came back to watch these videos, so many memories and can’t wait to start doing it myself…

I once weighed my truck in Edinburg, Texas (Think it was Edinburg). They had a sign for scale costs (best I can remember the numbers). 1st weigh, 10.00. 2nd weigh, 2.00. 3rd weigh, 2.00. 4th weigh, 2.00. 5th weigh. "Bring in your keys !!!!!

Last time I scaled my rig, I had a total weight of 140,000pounds. I also have permits which allow total wights up to 180,000pounds, but only have authority for states west of the Mississippi River, excluding California. I can haul up to 140,000pounds in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan; but I seldom exceed 130,000pounds in those states. I run a salvage company, and we haul scrap steel, which we get from railroads.

Everyone who says that he shouldn't release his brakes, in the video, at 2:06, he shows the sign that lists the instructions on what to do and near the bottom of the sign it says "Release Brakes".

that's a really good video specially since i never knew how they got weighed, what was involved , and how much they actually weighed , very educational video and also never knew they come in automatics always was under the impression they were all standard transmissions, cool video.

@somerandomdudepa if I remember correctly a automatci transmission in a semi truck is not much different from a 'normal' automatic transmission in a passenger vehicle. There is no clutch pedal. Recently some manufacturers (Volvo was the first) came up with semi-automatic transmissions with a manual clutch to make slow drifing (backin into a loading dock etc) easier for the driver because you have more control over the momentum of the vehicle. Hope that helps.

To all: In your opinion, if u know ur overloaded, is it better to skip the scale, and get the ticket for passing the scale, or go thru the scale, still get ticket for overweight, and waste more time fixing it until the officer clears u? I pass a pop up scale once due to inattention, ticket was like $300(I think). My co-driver was overweight on the trailer tandems, ticket was $440. Also spent 5-6 hours fixing it till we were clear.

@KentuckyTrucker85 Relaesing the brakes may relax tension on the combination vehicle, perhaps to prevent mis-measurement of axle weight. Some weigh bridges are not always level.
@KentuckyTrucker85
@KentuckyTrucker85 14 жыл бұрын
@TiffanyJ1985 The fee is 8 or 9 dollars and $1 or so for each re-weigh (for the scale shown). If your over weight you have to somehow take the weight off the truck. I had a case where I weighd and was over by 750 pounds. could not get rid of the extra weight by adjusting the tandems so I had to go back to the shipper and have them take some of the cargo out of the trailer.

@ta23909 he would have meant with out permits but yes with permits you can have alot more. in canada (ontario to be exact) you can have up to 7 or 8 trailer axles and i think that allows 100k or 110k pounds of goods in the trailer, not including about 15-20 k for tractor, and 10-15 for trailer. ive only seen one truck like that personally

Exactly what most drivers think. Actually, as long as you are not over gross the steer max is 12,500lb. So...if you move your 5th wheel up one notch and get heavier on the front you will have a much easier time balancing out the rear two axles. I used to run 11,800 front axle empty and about 12,480 full and max load.

That's a light load for us...I've pull onto the scales at 107,000....we are permitted for 108,000...every load is like that for us, and it's liquid so it moves around on the road...try that in a snow storm lol.

@KentuckyTrucker85 One of two things could happen, either they get extremely lucky and their truck stays put or it rolls away and hits something....lol I would hope for the driver's sake the first thing happens...It does actually say release brakes on the sign....That's pretty crazy
@brambo0987
@brambo0987 13 жыл бұрын
@KentuckyTrucker85 I am told because when your brakes are released you have your air pressure built up, and there is a tiny bit more weight on the truck? When you pull the park brake, maybe it fools the scales, cause the air is released and the brakes grab? PSI Pounds Per Square Inch...Weight ? Who the heck knows....LOL...Yeah I could see it being dangerous as well...I say apply your parking brake when scaling at all times..They already force so much safety stuff on us on the road as it is!

@rakoop Ahh, that makes since to me. and I never thought of it like that. You have a good point there. Though, I will admit, the entire time Ive drove, Ive always applied my brakes, sometimes just the tractor, sometimes just the trailer, sometimes / most of the time it was both, and Ive never had problems with axle weights, I was always legal on my axle weights. As another note, this is one of those things they should mention in school or at least your instuctor should mention I think.
@KentuckyTrucker85

@Knapper32927 That might be true, though as I mentioned in a previous post, I have always set my brakes and have never had any issue with weight and never had any trouble with DOT due to it. The only issues I had with using scales is sometimes the person printing off the slip didnt spell the company name correctly lol.
