Here's some feedback for you. I think it's ironic that you bought a weighted carbon fiber shift knob 😉

Consider the weight of the shift knob is pushing on the shift forks all the time, the oem is light for a reason
@coltondoescars
@coltondoescars 3 жыл бұрын
Most OEM shift knobs are actually surprisingly heavy compared to aftermarket shift knobs. The weight difference isn't enough to cause any concern about possible damage.

If your shift knob isn't directly on the forks, rather is connected to linkages and then to the gearbox, then it's perfectly fine :)

@@qwertyui90qwertyui90 the shift knob is what moves the forks however. This is mostly food for thought, same reason to not rest your hand heavily on the shifter

In the past ive thought is was a dumb picky thing. Then I did a auto to manual swap. The shifter and linkage came with a weighted shift knob and I love it. Biggest problem is its really cold in winter and really hot in summer.

Yeah I completely agree. And yeah, metal or in my case carbon knobs can get unbearable depending on the weather. It's worth it though! Haha.
@ryhk3293
@ryhk3293 4 жыл бұрын
That is exactly wrong. It actually takes more force to get the weighted knob moving, as it 1.) has more inertia and 2.) has more mass. You feel like there is less force involved because while the amount of additional force to get the weighted knob moving is inconsequential, after you do get it moving, it retains momentum and you feel it carrying the mass forward and because you are applying less force to knob than at the beginning of the throw, for neurokinematic reasons, you feel the difference more readily. Imagine a two sticks that have weights on one end (one heavier than the other) and is attached to a fulcrum on the ground at the other. With the sticks lying flat on the ground, raise weighted ends of the sticks until they are perpindicular with the ground. Which one require more force to get to that point? The heavier one, obviously. Now push the sticks drop to the other side of the fulcrum and keep pushing the sticks with the same amount of force. Which one would feel lighter?. From start to finish, which required more force in total? Now, take two objects of similar weights (say, two oranges or fishing weights, whatever) and place one in each hand. Tell me which one is heavier. Stop. What did you just do? You just moved your hands up and down, didn't you? Tell me at what part of that motion that you perceived the difference between the two? You almost certainly felt it as the objects were dropping, when your body was applying less force to the objects. IE, if you were doing this with a 100g weight vs a 110g weight, you would notice the difference before you did it with a 1100 weight vs a 1010g weight. Anyway, weighted knobs are all about imparting more momentum, not applying less force.
@coltondoescars
@coltondoescars 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it takes more force to actually get the knob moving. However, you also proved the exact point of what I was saying. The momentum increase from the additional weight is what makes the gear changes feel in effect, more effortless. Past the initial moment of starting that momentum, the advantage of additional mass is apparent. My choice of words in the video may have made that seem a bit confusing, however. I probably should have chosen to explain it a bit differently. You are correct that it does technically require more initial force to move the knob, but in general, the difference in what happens after that momentum has started is more noticeable than the small increase in initial effort required in this scenario.
@nicholasquintero1080
@nicholasquintero1080 3 жыл бұрын
That whole explanation is 100% wrong. Try shifting a short throw shifter with a plastic shift knob, then put a 400 g billet shift knob. It's like a bowling ball. Once you get the momentum going the inertia easily puts it into gear. Contradict that by having to force it into gear because you have no inertia (light weight shift knob) or leverage (short throw shift arm) to help you complete the shift. You need the inertia with a short throw shifter because you don't have the leverage provided to you by an extended shift arm. I'm speaking from the experience of having a WRX with a short throw shifter. I also have a Civic but the length of the shift arm makes it super easy for me to complete the shift. I don't think you have ever even tried to use one.

Weighted shift knobs will damage your transmission over time
@coltondoescars
@coltondoescars 3 ай бұрын
@@mikemeyer5973 That is a complete myth and totally incorrect. Most weighted shift knobs are actually very close in weight to many stock shift knobs. The additional mass is very little. Even if the additional weight was substantially higher, the only thing it could in theory cause minor wear to over time would be the shift forks, and even that's not particularly likely.
