We’ve added a ton of bits to Miata to make it fast, and the only thing we’ve really added for safety on the track has been our roll cage. So today we are looking at aftermarket seats and harnesses. Yes, they look cool BUT does it make sense to add them to your car, should you even be rocking a sweet OMP seat and OMP harnesses? And if so how do you install them? Let’s do this!
We have a new channel!
/ @donutpodcasts
Money Pit is where you get to learn about cars as we work on them. Each ep we’ll breakdown how each component works and then we’ll upgrade it. Join us in our journey to build cool cars, learn about them, and drive the crap out of them!

@@gopherchucksgamingnstuff2263 There are no side airbags on the NA Miata. Yes, the passenger airbag is probably still there, but I'm guessing he had to defeat it in someway to install the aftermarket seats. Also, Cipher makes a nice aftermarket wheel that retains the factory airbag. Zach could have went with that one. Also, the exhaust mods probably won't pass CA smog/CARB. Don't get me wrong, all the mods have been great and the series is awesome. But let's not pretend that seats alone turn this into a track car.

Several concerns here: 1: A lot of tracks will not let you on track with a 4 point harness, due to the risk of submarining. You are better off using aftermarket seats with stock seat belt. 2: With sliders, and a 2 part bracket there is no way you pass the broomstick test (especially with a helmet). Another thing that most tracks look for and will not let you on track. If you flip, your roll bar will not save you. You need a dropped floor pan and the lowest profile bracket, if you want sliders. 3: If you want to street drive a 4 point harness (which people do) you need DOT approved harness with anti-submarining loop in one of the shoulder straps. That way you don't get whiplash during an accident.
@gm5383
@gm5383 3 жыл бұрын
Thought there'd be more comments like this tbh. You're not wrong, stock belt is way easier when you are just using the car everyday too, you can bolt it behind the fixing eyelet so can have both the stock belt and harnesses installed. Biggest risk with harnesses is basal skull fracture in a head on, which is more likely on the road, no harness should really be used without a HANS, unless of course it has a break away section on one strap to help decelerate you (but then you can't use a HANS with that which for the £100 extra is totally worth it for when you are on track)

Question: How do you pick your track certified seats based on comfort? Safety is cool and all but I intend to put allot of hours into cruising streets and long roadtrips. I only want to hit the track on rare occasion and want my "1980 rally sport camaro" to be a street car first. Edit, thanks for the money pit series. I've learned so much from this particular series on all the dos and don'ts for my upgrades. I am especially thankful for your roll bar video as there is little information on the web for roll bars in convertibles. My intention is to mod my camaro to a hidden hard top convertible :D
@gunbloodx
@gunbloodx 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the only real possibility would be to go to a dealer and try them out. Thats what I did when I picked the seat for my sim and I can tell you, it really is worth the time. Seating position is really important with these kind of seats, if you aren't sitting correctly you can get really bad back pain, especially over longer periods of time. Also, based on the research I did when I bought my seat as well as the experience of my cousin, I would reconsider the idea of putting a bucket seat into a street car. With a lot of them you cant use the stock seatbelts anymore because of the belt guiding and 4-, 5- and 6-point harnesses are not practical on the road either. They need to be mounted in a specific way as to not risk injury (as partly mentioned in the video) and also need to be very tight, whicht makes looking over your shoulder and reversing without just mirrors next to impossible.

Get the right seats die the track, and just install them for track work, and stick with standards seats for the road. I have a race car I drive to the track and don’t use otherwise, and even driving an hour there/back in a proper race seat is pretty horrible.
@MrVkull
@MrVkull 3 жыл бұрын
Ok, I hear what you're saying. But then I'd need to have a quick and easy way to change the seats as spending 6 hours for seats every time I want to hit the track will just make me never want to hit the track 😅. Surely there exists a market for people like me and surely there's a brand catering to my niche. Like I'm talking about a racing seat designed to accommodate a standard 3point harness aswell as allow for shoulder checks and padding for comfort. Obviously I'd be sacrificing safety but assuming it still meets track regulations then it's probably still pretty safe off and on the track.
@gunbloodx
@gunbloodx 3 жыл бұрын
I doubt it would take 6 hours to change the seats, you could get an additional pair of sliders and mount them on the racing seat (with the sidemount if you need one obviously). That way you could just take the stock seat on its sliders out and pop the race seat in. Depending on your car and how easy it is to get to the screws I could see that happening in less than 20 minutes. That being said, there are "racey" seats for road cars. They're not full blown bucket seats but should provide better support compared to (most) stock seats while still being comfortable. Recaro's "Dynamic" seat range or OMP's "Style", "Design 2" or "Strada" are the ones I could find quickly.

I have an NA Miata just like Zach and seats for the Miata are a really big issue. Because the NA cockpit is so small and cramped there is really only a handful of seats that work, so that was the biggest factor for my Miata.To be honest I am shocked he got the seats in with the door bars. The best bet is to ask to sit in some seats of your friends and sit in them for at least 10 minutes. See which seats are tight and snug and which ones are more loose. The mounting is also a big obstacle. While Zach is running into a broomstick issue (especially with a helmet) because of the seat mounts +slider +side mounts he has the seat way too high above the floor pan for a car like the NA you would want low profile floor mounts, no rails, and height adjustable side mounts to get you as low as possible. I say all this because as the height changes on your seat the driving position will change in coordination to your steering wheel and it may become fatiguing after a while. And lastly with your side mounts you will want to pick ones that allow for recline. Most fixed back racing seats have an almost 100 degree recline which is extremely upright and will cause back pain within minutes, so even just a 15 degree additional recline will be so much more comfortable. (never use bottom mounts because then you can't recline with a fixed back bucket). So there is a lot to consider when you change out the seats. If street driving is really what you want, but you also want a little razzle dazzle in the interior, I would suggest purchasing a reclining racing seat and not a bucket seat (like what Zach and I have) They are way more comfortable but offer less bolstering. Which in your case sounds like fair trade off for a most street driven car. Just be sure to do lot's of research because any seat change will feel completely different and take some getting used to.
