WEIHRAUCH HW80 Long Range Hunter .22 Cal
This is my first impressions video on the Weihrauch HW80 Long Range Hunter .22cal.
I've always loved old classic springer air rifles. Thanks to Airguns Of Arizona who sent me this airgun on loan to test it out and take it into the field.
The classic look and design of the Weihrauch HW80 is what drew to it in the first place. Weihrauch has been in bussiness since 1899 and has been making airguns since the late 1930's. The HW80 has been in production since the early 1970's and has been a classic ever since.
If you want to learn more about the HW80 please check out these links.

This gun is queen of airguns. Pinacle of airgun engineering. Very durable, powerful and accurate. Its trigger is the best in the airgun world. Million times better than Diana and any other springer brand.

What’s awesome about springers is all you need is a can of pellets and an arm, nothing else. Pcp just got way out of hand. So for the price of a gaint bottle for air storage, I bought a Diana Airking 54 laminate pro for the same price. This gun rocks. I’m never going back to pcp.

All Weihranch guns are worth buying. I bought a .20 cal WH90 gas ram but I would certainly want the 80 in a collection as next choice, if it comes in 20 cal, which I believe most do from Weihranch.

Great improvements with the new stock, swivels and a moderator. It was my first "adult" airrifle that i bought in the late eighties, it still works great after all these years. Next week i will give it a service with new main spring and piston seal and it will ready for the next decades. I have some pcp's as well but i doubt if they will be operational in 20 years time.

Thanks John for the review. We had springers in our family from a very young age. They were incredible game getters and us brothers put much game on the table using them. The fact that you cock it once and reload and are ready to fire again, I believe for hunting, is superior to a multi pump gun which takes longer to prepare for a second shot. Don't get me wrong, I also love the multi pump guns and have a few of each. I'm enjoying your air gun evaluations and looking forward to your further reviews!

Thanks for a great presentation. And interesting information, it is clear you Wingman has experience. But please, regarding pellets like the regular, cheap ones like Crosman, Gamo etc - those don't do a good rifle justice. They are probably mass produced and unstable. Highly recommend JSB, they are consistently the best. Note what a consultant at the factory there once said: "we have employees at the assembly line who inspect and evaluate each and every pellet before it is possibly approved and packed in the box for sale".. That probably says it all.

I’m a Weihrauch man through and through and I say the same to anyone who asks me which springer should I buy and I tell them to keep saving until they have enough to buy a Weihrauch as they will have it for life if looked after. I must admit I haven’t yet got myself a hw 80 but I do have two 95’s in 22 and 177 and they are outstanding and light enough to easily carry all day on a hunt and very accurate. I also have the 99s as my grab and shoot rifle for the vermin that sometimes decide to take up home under my sheds. But my favourite is my 97k blue laminate now that’s taking thing to the next level pellet on pellet at 35 yards. Yes I have a couple of pcp’s but I like to go back to my roots and take the springers out, firstly to keep my sue in using a springer as it’s a totally different way to shoot compared to the pcp ie the holding of the rifle allowing the gun to do its thing and secondly to remind myself and others how we all started shooting when it’s all we had and to prove that you don’t need to spend a fortune to buy a pcp and a bottle or pump when you can have a Weihrauch with a proven track record that will produce the same results over and over again.

That's my guess. Sweet rifle I hope your can shoot all the other ammo tested over the chrony to see deviation get better? Awesome Job.

Trouble is that a Weihrauch piston is second cousin to a breeze block compared to an Air Arms piston. In the UK they are used to be imported over the limit of 12 lbs, so they got their mainsprings reduced by an angle grinder! Internally they used to be full of grease as well. But unless the piston has been redesigned since I last bought a HW80, I'm not impressed with the internals of these rifles. Plus there has been some problems with the fit of the barrel to the hinge pin. Those shims are not sometimes the right width to give a good fit in this area. Having said that, I've got a HW95 carbine which I rate highly. It's never been looked at internally in any way and is comfortably within the UK limit of 12 ft lbs. In the UK an HW80 is too heavy for its power, your better off with a HW95. Also, maybe they don't sell the HW80 in the UK anymore with the 30mm chamber?

@@Wingman115 I'd be curious to see the difference. There was an article I saw online a while back, where comparative tests where done with the same piston guns near sea level, then up at higher ranges. There was a real loss. The chamber volume just can't do as much with thinner air. But also the thinner air lets the pellet retain velocity slightly better due to lower resistance. Anyhoo, good stuff!

Beautiful rifle! At over $700, I would hope it would last long enough to be passed down as an heirloom... But Let me be honest. I came into the air gun fold as a way to supplement my trigger time from my centerfire, powder burning addiction a couple of years ago when it was easier to find bigfoot than score a brick of primers. Yes, I have a stock pile of primers and powder enough to last a fair length of time. But I saw this as a time to try air guns again... Memories of my crossman 760 pump master came to mind. I purchased a Hatsan 125 in .22. it has BIG POWER, but not the accuracy.... I'm used to plinking with .223 handloads using range brass, Horn 55's and 20 grns of RL10 and printing sub 1" at 100 yards with a econo CBC 24" Heavy Bull barrel upper on a poly AR15 with a 2 stage 2lb trigger. I don't have $600 in the complete rifle and its a tack driver with progressive loaded plinking stuff! So imagine my dismay to find out I can only hit a tuna can at 100 yards about 30-40% of the time. Again, 100 yds with a break-barrel is a tall order. BUT THIS WAS MY EXPECTATION (and still is)... I discovered my bottom line couldn't be met with a break barrel. But I think the Air Venturi Avenger in .177 comes REAL close to checking all the boxes... even almost matching the unlimited "practical outing shot count" capability of a break barrel. Let me explain; the first thing anyone says when comparing a PCP to a break barrel is shot count. "I don't have to carry a bottle with me in the field while I'm using a springer, with a PCP you're only gonna get 25-50 shots and then you need air"... well I have a video of my stock .177 taking 100 shots in ten 10 shot groups on a single air fill and then shooting a shot string across the chrony and making about 17 fpe with shots 101-106. The groups were shot at 36-37 yards off a bag. The groups were all smaller than a golf ball and most could be covered with a quarter. I tried shooting the Hatsan 125 one hundred times back to back. With a 50 pound cocking force I can say most shooters will not shoot it 100 times in a single outing. And it can't touch the accuracy of the little Avenger in .177. The Hatsan will make about 27-29 FPE. The tune used for 100 shots in the .177 only made about 17 fpe but turned up, it can break 26 fpe. Again, accuracy is my top requirement. But 105 shots making almost 17 FPE and nearly stacking pellets at 36-37 yards? Oh, it will shoot golf ball size groups at 100 yards... hitting a 3" tuna can is almost a sure thing with every shot. .177 at 200 yds? How about shooting a pill bottle at 200 yds with back to back hits. Break Barrel just isn't the right choice for me.... but each their own... if you shoot and support the sport, God Bless you. And remember, the easiest modification for accuracy is trigger time... Stock $349 .177 rifle...
