He knew what she was going to say from the get go and he would have actually given it to her, mistress or not, if he'd been able to; he's telling the truth when he says he's put all his money is in English banks (understandably so, considering the precarious state of affairs in the South) and if he tried to draw on it the Yankees would take it in a second. In the book he's described as shoving his fists into his pockets as if straining at his own inability to help her. He's actually admiring the lengths she's prepared to go to to save Tara.

Well you have to remember that she WAS desperate, she was literally starving and so was everyone else at Tara. Rhett was her only chance of survival. There's a line later on in the book when some of the Atlanta men refuse to work for Scarlett, because she's a woman and they are too proud, and Scarlett retorts that you can't eat pride. And she's right. Putting up with a few insults is nothing when your life is literally on the line.

She could get Rhett back. She knew she could. There had never been a man she couldn’t get, once she set her mind upon him. “I’ll think of it all tomorrow, at Tara. I can stand it then. Remember they had a made for tv movie that was called Return to Tara or something back in the 90s. Val Kilmers wife, Joanne Whaley Kilmer played Scarlett but I dont recall who played Rhett or Ashley. It aired on CBS, I remember cause that channel has always given me the creeps. It's funny, I know, but something about channel CBS makes me anxious; the shows, the news, the commercials! I'm reading the book, I'm close to the end now, but what I remember is that this scene in this book is way more complex. She does not just try to make him think that she would give in to marrying him, but at the end she is so desperate that she goes as far as to propose to be his mistress, and because he laughs it out and does not comply she faints and is so humiliated for going so far and not getting the money. In the book she doesn't faint out of humiliation, she faints because she starts screaming at Rhett and tries to lunge at him, Rhett puts his hand over her mouth and restrains her so as not to bring the guards down upon them, and that combined with her tight corset and the shock, makes her pass out.

I absolutely agree with you. It also breaks my heart that gone with the wind has a rather heart breaking ending. Would you please miss Margaret Mitchell re-write the book again with a happy ending .

Can never stop laughing how they ran out of fabric on her sleeves so she's only got the one side draped.

I believe the last line of Scarlett at the end told us that they did end up together, because whatever Scarlett wants, Scarlett gets (except Ashley 😂)

At least she cares about her home Tara than fashion. Cant Rhett see that instead of playing with her?

If they were trying to make the dress look like it was put together on the fly, they didn't pull it off. :) A half capelet on one shoulder, peter pan color over a steep v neckline, accessorized hat, curtain cords used perfectly as piping. Whoever made the dress is skilled and could've gotten a swank job in town as a dressmaker to help make some money.
