It is worth mentioning that Scarlett's wedding dress is supposed to have been her mother's. It would have been made sometime around 1840 and it reflects the fashions of that era. Also, the wartime wedding was so sudden, there was no time to alter the dress so it fairly bags on Scarlett who is much smaller than her mother.
@CulturedElegance
@CulturedElegance Жыл бұрын
That is correct!! But 1830s gigot or leg-o-mutton sleeves reached their widest point between 1830 and 1833. Around 1836 there is a complete shift in the silhouette of the day and by 1840 the large gigot or leg-o-mutton sleeves had disappeared.

@@CulturedElegance Thanks for the clarification. The film's wedding dress is a faithful recreation of the one described in the book. The back story of the dress is not explained in the film but it shows on screen nonetheless.

Scarlett and Rhett honeymooned in New Orleans, not europe, but it's an easy mistake to make since they look a lot alike. When she is in bed in the scene where he is standing beside her, that is supposed to be on a Mississippi River boat. People often overnighted on them traveling between St. Louis and New Orleans. I love the video on the lovely dresses, it is so sad they can't or won't make anymore films like "Gone with the Wind." If you're interested in reading the book, you can do so online for free now. Viviane Leigh was such a beautiful, talented actress! I love all the dresses in this movie!💕 I just noticed that Scarlett is wearing a mourning brooch with a design with human hair. Very accurate since mourning attire would feature the deceased hair in jewelry worned by their loved ones.

I noticed this brooch also! It's been my favourite movie since I first saw it, and I still watch it regularly...I know every word that's coming next! Yet I didn't notice the mourning brooch until I'd seen Catilin Doughty's video about mourning jewellery on her channel, "Ask a Mortician" - which I highly recommend, by the way. She can help you through all things "death and dying", and answers all of the questions regarding end of life...which I have found particularly helpful.

Hair brooches weren't only for mourning the dead. People used to make them to give to loved ones to wear to war or when separated from a loved one, . My family had a few around when I was small but I don't know what happened to them. I remember they were tiny braids of hair turned or coiled artfully in the brooch. We had one that had my great-grandmother's bright red hair. My mother moped all her life none of us kids got her hair.

I think the blue velvet dress with the spectacular white lace shawl is so indicative of the character, that it is an unforgettable statement of the movie. At one time u could order that “portrait” from the Turner store in ATL. On the bottom was GWTW 1939-1989. It was quite striking when framed. IDK if it is attainable today. There were many items for sale, as the movie was 50 yrs old, at that time. The original portrait was found in an auditorium in downtown ATL.
@evilempryss
@evilempryss Жыл бұрын
Don't know if anyone noticed, but one of the very rare times you can see the framing of Scarlet's hoop skirts is when she's wearing the War Dress. The costumers were amazing in their detail: you can see the hoop frame thru her skirt because Scarlet isn't wearing the usual layers of flounced petticoats between dress and hoop. She's likely had to sacrifice what would have been yards and yards of fine cotton fabric for wound dressings for the soldiers.

Indeed, Walter Plunkett's sumptuous creations deserved an Oscar, they were and are STILL "the stuff dreams (and icons) are made of!" The way he draped the scarlet tulle over that magnificent velvet evening gown for Leigh's entrance at Ashley's bday party, the dramatic asymmetry of the crimson ostrich feathers -- mirroring Leigh's haughty, disdainful arched eyebrow... She made Time stand still + take a 2nd glance! Scarlett was NOT ONLY an UNESCORTED, DROP DEAD SCANDEL, but a DROP-DEAD FEMME FATALE!!! The ensemble of TALENT -- of actors, cast and crew, did NOT MISS ONE DETAIL in the production of this masterpiece! It is sheer perfection STILL.

Hands down the red dress from Ashley’s party. It is gorgeous! My Mom calls it her “Bitch Dress”. I love how Melanie makes everyone greet her. My second dress is the white dress with the blue velvet bolero that leads to the need for the red dress. Scarlett is definitely a clothes horse. If you haven’t read the book you should. In the book, Melanie spends the next week after Ashley’s party taking Scarlett to all of the major society ladies to have tea. Melanie’s message was “Love me, love my dog.” Melanie had a quiet strength to her that was just as strong as Scarlett’s outward strength.

i love how her wedding dress was her mothers hand me down from the 1830s, the gigot sleeves the fact it was fitted to the actress playing the mother, hence why its so much longer on her and without her hoopskirt it would droop even more, its even loose throughout the bodice on her, having the silk be cream or yellowed signifying its age was a nice touch, looking almost golden in some frames

although scarlett being the eldest born at around 1845 it would be somewhat strange that mr and mrs O'Hara took so long after the mid 1830s (date i pinned for the size of the gigot sleeves on her mother wedding dress) to have their first child in the era where as many children where wanted as possible by those who came from money and a good name

The BBQ dress and straw hat are so pretty and suit an ingenue, as Scarlett was at that time. The white dress and blue spencer jacket are superb for an older manipulative woman, and the red party dress Rhett makes her wear just shows how Rhett despaired of what her thought had happened. So the clothes also tell the 'Story of Scarlett'.

The red evening gown is of course my favorite. If you love movie read the book, you won't be disappointed. Ashley kept leading Scarlett along because he was a coward and too much of a gentleman to tell her how much in love he was with Melanie. Because Scarlett couldn't marry Ashley she married her sisters' suitors for her own needs, the first one being she'd hoped to make Ashley jealous.

Now you're speaking my love language! This was so fun! And slightly off topic, but i love how color coded the different types of women were in movies and tv. In old western shows the pure, good girls wore blue, the girls that seemed good but were conniving always wore green (black lace accents if extra naughty), and the ones who were rotten to the core wore red and black. Little Joe never could resist a girl in green lol.

I love Gone with the Wind, and if you've never read the book, you need to. It goes much deeper into some of the women's personalities. The movie costumes are beautiful in the sense that I believe they were designed to create the atmosphere of the mythical "Old South" or the "Lost Cause" that was the main view of Southern History at the time. With this goal in mind, you can understand that some of these dresses are more authentic than others. Enjoy these for what they are, but if you want to see what women were actually wearing, look at some period photographs, patterns made from museum garments, and even fashion plates (although the latter were romanticized.)
@mrbutch308

The dress Miss Scarlett wears in the opening scenes -the ruffled white one - is very pretty, but not precisely accurate historically speaking. In 1861 women wore long sleeves during the daylight hours. The movie is a little more romanticized than the book, and in fact Tara was not supposed to look quite so stately, it was just a farm house really. I agree with you - the myth of the "old South" was played up more in the movie than in the book ... Margaret Mitchell was in fact more sympathetic to Black folks and left her entire estate to Morehouse College (a historically Black college).
@xXOpenYourHeart759Xx
@xXOpenYourHeart759Xx Жыл бұрын
I’ve slowly accepted that the creative choice for making Tara and Twelve Oaks so elevated was to help the audience understand what the southerners homes felt like to them. They felt they lived in big beautiful homes and took them for granted. That way it’s maybe more easily understood what the plantation owners felt the war took away from them. That way of living was romanticized by them as time went on too.
@aaguero

@@mrbutch308 I never knew about Mitchell's contributions to Morehouse, and learning this amazed me, considering how racist the movie is. Mitchell wrote the book, so I presume she had little control over the racist elements of the film.
@mrbutch308
@mrbutch308 Жыл бұрын
@@aaguero Yes, you are right. Mitchell washed her hands of the movie. She was especially amused at how large Twelve Oaks was - comparing it to Grand Central Station. For his part Selznick (the producer of the movie) wanted to give his audience what he assumed they wanted to see - the myth of the gracious Old South, the whole Lost Cause narrative - which we all know was a lie and historical revisionism at it's worst.

My colouring is very similar to Scarlett's, and we both look good in black, which not everyone does. My favourite of all Scarlett's dresses is the green and white one she wore early on to the picnic, although her curtain dress is magnificent and a true work of art. She was a woman who could really wear the clothes she had, and she truly owned them once they were put on her. My mom got a part time job just to get me a fancy dress made for my then boyfriend's prom in 1966. (We married in 1969, when I was 18 and were married for 50 years.) The dress was a strapless lite blue dotted Swiss, just like Cinderella's dress. The skirt was scalloped with a flounce of netting underneath. Full, blowup, hoop skirt too. Long white gloves and a white rabbit fur stole. It was her dream and mine. Unfortunately, she had a brain aneurism just 2 weeks before the prom and even though I didn't want to go to prom because she was dying, I got dressed up and went to the hospital. By the grace of God and a surgeon in Canada she did not die but she didn't remember me at all. She never got her memory back of me, but she knew who my husband was, the brain is a crazy thing. Sorry this is so long but this brough back so many memories.

As I’ve watched the movie more, I notice it too. That red/burgundy dress we all love is very of the era. The hairstyles have a hint of late 30s as well. Period films of today still do that sort of thing. I think it’s done intentionally to “make it easier for the audience to connect with the characters” or whatever.
