When I was still living in Vietnam back in the late 1970s and 1980s, the country was very much like North Korea. We were cut off from the rest of the world. No independent news outlet, no one was allow to leave the country except a few diplomats. Children were brainwashed. We all worshiped Ho Chi Minh, the late leader, like God. Any slipped words that offend Ho Chi Minh or the government will help send you to "re-education" camp. If you dare to protest, you may end up as good as dead. The economy was miserable. Things started to change in the 1990s when the United States normalized the relationship with Vietnam, under Bill Clinton's presidency (by that time I had already escaped the country as a refugee and migrated to the US). The economy was flourishing, and the country was more open to the world. Vietnam today is much different, though it is still under a repressive regime. People still go to prison for protesting or speaking out against the government. Human rights activists are handed long prison terms. The unwritten rule is: do whatever you want but don't touch politics. Everytime I view a video about North Korea, I can imagine what people feel and think. The thing is, most of them don't know that they are living under a repressive regime. They thought they were free and had a better life than people in other countries. Those who know, dare not to speak. But the truth cannot be hidden forever. Some day, North Korean people will know.

Thanks for sharing that first hand account, unlike other communistic countries i had always viewed the current Vietnamese regime as far more “hands off” and subdued in handling its people, but i then realised this was a misunderstanding on my part, when a couple of months ago my Vietamese gaming buddy disappeared (he was learning English and even some Polish from us while playing) and he told me eventually on a message that the government had basically banned and blocked access to these western games and services. I was shocked considering the sudden and large scale banning of foreign media is usually very high up on the more major red flags of an authoritarian state… not even the USSR or modern Russia had done that.

to be fair to the divorce thing, you should not marry someone just because. its a ceremony that means something, if your too stupid to understand that please never get married. it dosent grant you much benefits, its mostly something to strenghten a family.
