Folks shouldn't be whiney about this song. Cobain is on record as having liked it and in fact considered this parody as a sign that Nirvana had achieved the big time. Parody requires a lot of work to pull off accurately and in fact it is rather difficult to do a good and humorous parody without having love and respect for the source material. Heck just LOOK at this video. They went through the trouble of getting most of the people from the original video to play in it, act similarly to the way the original was shot and even get their instruments to sound similar. Then listen to the lyrics, creative, funny, and stylized in Al's usual way without feeling a leap from his usual style of music. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get a result like that? To have a sound that is both your own yet similar to someone else's and still be entertaining all on its own? Te amount of dedication put into this one production of video and song shows a deep love and respect for the source material.

I couldn't agree more. Al Yankovic manages to perfectly mimic the style and sound of the original work in all of his parodies, and yet give it his own touch. That takes a lot of skill of both Al and his band, and it shows respect to the original work. Also: legally speaking, Al doesn't even need to ask for permission; but he does so anyway to make sure there are no hard feelings, and he abandons his plans when the original artist doesn't like the idea.

534DaHill Spot on Gskaloyan, Daniel K. and 534Dahill! (Bookplate, that is a bit harsh... might be true as far as him killing himself... but as to me personally.. I am too old to make a call on Nirvana being overrated. I was born in 62 so I am not the target audience. I was soo jaded I considered most of the bands in the 80's to be "New bands" or "Upstarts", (obviously I was in my 20's so that was a bit silly). Once I pulled my head out of my butt, I had to admit I really liked many bands in the 80's... I liked them a lot! I am slow to like a new song/band, but I do like some of the newer stuff, (not much... still have a very hard time liking Rap/Hip Hop, but that is OK). As I said, ... I am not the target audience.Sluggo

This is by far Weird Al’s best song. I like how he included lyrics similar to the actual song instead of changing every lyric to make it sound silly. I also like how he included all the scenes from the original video and simply highlighted the crazy antics of grunge concerts of the 90’s. His resemblance to Kurt Cobain is also very good.

Ya, people don't realize Nirvana was all in when weird Al called him to do this parody. Nirvana was just starting out and when weird Al proposed this to Kurt, Kurt knew they made it and it would help them. Dave Grohl and weird Al are great friends and all of Nirvana was very pleased that weird Al chose to do this parody and Kurt loved it. A lot of young Nirvana fans don't know that Kurt Cobain had a really good sense of humor. He wasn't like the artists nowadays. I'll give you all another fact. Kurt and Al became friends and in the song, Al did Kurt a favor and advertised for his band, "We're Nirvana, buy our album." RIP

Why are people butthurt about Weird Al making fun of Nirvana? Quit being major fanboys. Weird Al personally asked Kurt if he could parody the song. No, the song wasn't created in 2009 like many people seem to think, that's simply an upload date because if you didn't know, KZbin didn't exist in 1992 when this song was created, but you'd have to do the impossible task of reading the description to solve that mystery. Plus, you cant deny that Weird Al did a wonderful job of mocking the original song. I've known the original song since long before I heard Weird Al's version. Its been around 20 years yet I still cant decipher a word Kurt was saying. Weird Al portrayed that perfectly with "bargle nawdle zouss" as it doesn't get much closer to the original than that. that's how Weird Al rolls. there's pretty much something for everyone in his body of work, and he also makes a point to license the actual performer before parodying the song; the James Blunt brouhaha notwithstanding, because it was Atlantic that jumped in to claim the copyrights to You're Beautiful when Blunt had already given Al the green light - and that's where i think Al's right; the music should belong, first and foremost, to the artist rather than the recording company.

This music video was my introduction to Weird Al as a kid. Loved it then, still love it now. Al’s stuff always manages to be as timeless as the songs he does parodies of.
@zoetercy9208 Жыл бұрын
I love this parody, too. I makes me sad, though, that 80% of Al's songs are his amazing originals, and hardly anyone even knows about them. I was over the moon, though, to go to 3 of his originals only tours, and hear the crowd go crazyy for these incredible songs. His band is unbelievable!!!

before people hate on weird al they should know he personally calls and asks for permission from these artists and helps them get more fans. Kurt himself actually said he thanks weird al for getting him into the lime light

Yes in some artists case. But nevermind was already gold and rocketing towards platinum when weird Al did this parody.
@jamessummers59463 жыл бұрын
Paul MaCartney is the only person who has ever rejected Al from doing a parody of one of his songs. Weird Al was going to do a parody of “Live and Let Die” called “Chicken Pot Pie” but McCartney wouldn’t let him as he was vegan and didn’t want a song like that linked to him but instead suggested to call it “tofu pot pie” but Al said the chorus was going to go “bock bock bock booock” but tofu makes no noise so it would have never worked.
@gus.smedstad3 жыл бұрын
McCartney was hardly the only one. A quick search will give you an article detailing at least 10 different musicians who refused, including McCartney and Prince. Prince stands out for me, because reading between the lines, it's apparent the man had no sense of humor. It's worth watching Kevin's Smith's story about his week with Prince.
